I may consider buying a machine polisher then, seen some Silverline ones on ebay. Can anyone tell me what I should be looking for when I buy one, i.e. which pads to go for?
Also, I would rather remove the swirls than fill them, as thats what the Einzett has been doing.

3M backing plates are the best, much more flexible than other brands.

As for pads you can't really go wrong with megs, lake country or 3M

Here's a break down of a basic starter kit:

silverline rotary ~£20-30
polishing pad ~£11
finishing pad ~£11
backing plate ~£20
work light ~£20
masking tape ~£3
polish ~£18
finishing polish ~£18
microfibre towels ~£5
claybar ~£15

then you add on your protection polish/glaze/sealant/wax or whatever LSP you fancy...but the prices for that can vary hideously :D

Just a quick one...

Washed the missus car on the weekend, managed to get a coat of SRP on followed by some EGP, but then something came up and I had to leave it at that. Would have like to put a coat of Collinite too.

So, can I just wash it off next weekend and apply the wax without redoing the SRP etc.?

Thanks. I have all of that apart from the polisher and pads.
Why do I need a work light?
Is finishing polish a lighter abrasive?

A decent work light will allow you to see the defects and swirls better, so you know how it's going, and whether it needs more work etc.

A more intensive polish will leave the paint surface coarse, so a finishing polish will refine the surface. Think of it as using a rough sand paper, followed by a finer one to leave a better finish.

Yeah, just wash/dry it as normal and the Collinite will go over the EGP no problems that way.

I have, I buy the majority of my car cleaning stuff from there, service is awesome :) . They have a forum there as well with a few 'How To' threads.

Awesome stuff! Ill probably end up buying a few bits and bobs from there. Ill also have to check the forums out.

Finished this last sunny weekend, and It took 2 solid weekend and a lot of effort but I got there in the end, and she is now ready to be sold. Sad but has to be done.

So here is the stuff for my first ever detail:

- Washed first with Megs gold wash
- Degreaser used on all those hard to get bits.
- Engie bay with some grit remover and degreaser to get an acceptable but not too keen finish (it was black before all over).
- A good ol' claying then to remove everything caked on over the last 30+ years, with plenty of water sprayed from a bottle to lube it up.
- Then x2 coats of SRP buffed off with a microfibre towel.
- Then goes the colly 476 with a damp applicator, then buffed off.
- Chrome next with some turtle wax chome stuff I found.
- Hoover interior and use some armour all.
- Then the windows.
- Finally a massive beer and self Hi-5

And here she is, a 1974 Audi 80GL in Iberion red, with a rare factory fitted sunroof. Plus in the background is my baby Sunny SR who is filthy like a hooker until I clean her.

As she came out of hiding

Cheers, my arms are still recovering :D

Have to love old cars for their simplicity, if something goes wrong you can probably bodge it back until sourcing a new part, none of this ECU controlled malarky :D

Thats missing two things...

1) Tyre Shine
2) Engine Bay Clean/Shine.

Don't have any tyre shine and the engine bay had a whole day spent on it. To get it any better would be completely anal and I decided to let the new owner have something to clean.

Awesome the gif files with blury plate look crap, must tweak.

Friday i decided to try something new. I painted my Tyres. Black Liquid Gloss 1 part to about 3 - 4 parts Petrol. Applied by normal painting brush. I masked off the alloys first. Results are amazing even though i was a little sceptical.

Agreed, makes a big difference.

On the topic of tyre shine, whats the best stuff to use? When i bought my car the tyres looked brand new, dunno what they used but it was good stuff.

I bought some Autoglym tyre dressing and its crap, makes very little difference and just seems to drip off and not soak in.
