* The Comic Book and Graphic Novel thread *

Anyone know what the Spawn series is like? Really tempted to pick it up.

It looks pretty :D

I read up to about 40. It's ok. You can tell MacFarlane is just pulling stories out of his ass a lot of the time and as it goes on he has to write himself out of a lot of corners.

The animated series is worth a look - if you don't like it, you definitely won't like the comic. I'll not link to YouTube (swearies/violence), just search for Spawn Animated Series

While not a comic book I highly recommend Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. It's an 1980s manga that is still going and is really good! I've finished the first story arc and I can't wait to read the next one!

It's got OTT action, vampires and humour.

Ok, this is cool.

I've now read Hush, loved it, and I've decided to work my way forward from Court of Owls.

I'm a bit confused though....

There are loads of different versions of batman. I'm not sure of the exact chronology of all these various storylines but once something's happened in for example 'hush' then court of owls was published later, do all the events from previous storylines carry over??

For example, Batman tells Catwoman that he's Bruce Wayne. Does that mean in ALL subsequent stories, regardless who they're by etc, she still knows??

Generally yes, but in that specific case, no

:D

Typically, most batman comics occur in the same time period (not the exact same time). Events that happen in one comic stand for all the others.

There are some exceptions - for example, Legends of the Dark Knight was an non-continuity book. Standalone graphic novels (ie: not a collection of comics) are often non-continuity as well

However....

Court of Owls is book 1 of the new 52 Batman run. Basically, DC reset the entire DC universe (in an event called Flashpoint), so things that happened prior to New 52 do not necessarily still stand....but they might :D

Ha,this is so deep and complex!!! So much history is referenced, yet some of it is persistent and some remains in individual stories! (Cheers shorttricky)

I've read a few that have been recommended to me over the last couple of weeks:-

Hush
Civil War
Red Son
Batman and Son
Even tried Judge Dredd vs Alien!

Hush was great and the artwork was fantastic!! Really enjoyed that one.

I enjoyed Civil war, good story but a bit hectic. Too many characters, the majority I'd never heard of!!

Red Son was a good, interesting premis, enjoyed it but Superman is a pussy!

Batman and Son was brilliant!! Really enjoyed it, much more edgy and the characters were interesting.

I'm going to take the plunge and start at the beginning of 'The New 52' with Batman, Batman and Robin, Batgirl and Nightwing! That lot should keep me going for a while (and cost me a few bob!).
I'm only going for the TPB's, makes much more sense to me than buying individual comics.
Might even get the Catwoman ones aswell....

Still on my quest to go from avengers disassembled through to AvX and just hit secret invasion. The quality to this point has been great, the storylines surprisingly good and the build up to SI really good but then SI itself, dear god what a complete load of dross.

I don't know who to trust, neither do I, let's just hit everyone, **** YEAH!! Such a huge build up with a lot of potential and it was complete and utter drivel. Just page after page of punch ups and fights with zero storyline and no real purpose and if the ending is why Osborn takes control :o

If the quality continues in this direction I will be bailing out well before AvX if I even reach Siege.

Left under the tree for me this year.:)

No no no, Dark Reign and Siege are both great, just keep at it :D

Swamp Thing and Animal Man are superb - I still haven't tried WW, but I hear good things about it. Worth a read then?

Without a doubt. They've changed some of the mythology, and they've introduced some characters that tag along with her. Awesome read. Just be careful as the book has a new creative team now so if you're going to read it start with 1#. :)

Does anyone have a Marvel Unlimited subscription? Worth it? I've never really delved in the Marvel world.

Just reading through Sandman right now, little bit confusing at times but enjoyable.

I've been meaning to buy the rest of the Preacher series - I got given Gone to Texas (issues 1-7) years ago and found it pretty cool.

Has anyone read them?

I haven't got a sub but reference it being worth it I'm working from avengers disassembled forward focusing on the avenger comics (getting a few Cap, Spidey and Xmen titles to flesh out at times) and it is good.

My one complaint with Marvel (not sure if DV area similar) is how no one dead ever stays dead, just kill off a blinking character for gods sake!!!! :p
