* The Comic Book and Graphic Novel thread *

seeing a lot of good recommendations coming in here and it's certainly adding to my list but 1 of my favourites ain't getting a mention and certainly worth a read:

  • Preacher by Garth Ennis

I'll also have to give a cookie to those who mentioned Transmetropolitan!!

Soon to be a series. Think Seth Rogan is involved.

Cheers all, thanks for all the suggestions!! :)

I think I'll start with court of Owls, see how I get on and if I enjoy it I'll follow on from there.

This 'Death in the Family' has been suggested by the same pal who originally suggested Court of Owls, but isn't it the third in that series?

From looking on Amazon, it seems it's #1 The Court of Owls, #2 The City of Owls, #3 Death in the Family.....?

I think as I'm starting from scratch with no idea about story lines, who's who and why etc, I need to work through chronologically, or do comics not work like that??

Is it all one coherent story line or are different episodes different stories all together?!

Basically they've started again and called it the New 52. Start from TPB (Trade Paperback) volume 1 and then continue on.

Vol 1

Vol 2

Vol 3

Vol 4

Vol 5

Volume 3 is the Death of the Family. Death in the family is from the 1980s, and is definitely worth a read as it's separate to the new 52. While Death of the Family is it's own storyline, it's also got mentions to the previous TPBs

There's also Night of the Owls if you're a completist which collects the bits from other 'bat family' comics that tie in with the Court of Owls story.

Death in (thanks Deep ;)) the family gets referenced in so many other books, it's worth reading just so you know why :D. Brilliant book too.

Don't. You're not missing anything.

Death in the Family is great even if the cover essentially shows the outcome.

I read Death of the Family with all the tie ins, also great but you probably only really need the Batman bits.

I'm definitely hoping for something a bit adult themed. Not necessarily violent or racey (although isn't that the point of comics?!), just so long as it's not nonsense or childish.

If you like superheroes and want something with some adult themes I would recommend The Boys by Garth Ennis I found the whole series brillant.

Best place to buy online? Or is Amazon as good as anywhere?

Edit: Ordered 'Gordon of Gotham' from Forbidden Planet. I've heard of them so they must be good.

I appreciate the stories in Gordon of Gotham are from the 90's and I was aiming for somewhere current to start off, is Court of Owls dramatically different?
I like the idea of the Gotham PD being normal cops in a world with super villains etc. Never really come across that concept before, it's always super heroes that take on super villains. Sounds like fun, so I went for it!

Amazon is the cheapest - buy from the alternative sellers.

Death in the family is unbelievablely good. However the joker omnibus equivalent is hit and miss. Basically you can't go wrong with Scott Snyder

Just bought myself the epic sandman omnibus volume 1 - cost a fortune!!

You might enjoy Cataclysm/No Man's Land too - Gotham gets pulverised by an earthquake and becomes a total disaster zone - the police basically become a gang. Good story, if a touch long (5/6 books I think?)

Amazon is great (look at 3rd party sellers too). Forbidden Planet can have some great deals, but they are dreadful at updating stock availability. Book Depository is pretty cheap too.

This is a great series, and they've recently re-released them in 4 TPBs

Not up with all the lingo. What's a TPB??

The Gordon of Gotham I ordered is out if stock so not seen that yet.
Had a bit of a flick through 'Hush' in Waterstones today, actually looked pretty cool! Didn't buy it because they'd all been leafed through by scrotes like me, but I think I'm going to scoop that up on Amazon.

Still yet to actually read a comic, but from looking a few bits up the last week or so seems I might quite like like them!!

Guys question from a batman noob. Is the dark knight and batman the same timeline and any events happening in one effect the other or are there multiple versions of batman and you can read one and forget the rest?

A TPB is a trade paperback.
A comic is usually released once a week/month and each release will have only a few pages. A trade paperback collects a number of these together into one book.

So take a comic from Image, their TPBs contain 5 months worth of single issues together. This makes it easier to read and to buy
