* The Comic Book and Graphic Novel thread *

Yeah Image is full of amazing. Also lots of great Vertigo stuff. Here are a few ideas:

100 Bullets
Chew
DMZ
Fables
Fatale
Girls
Hellboy
Locke & Key
Lucifer
Morning Glories
Northlanders
Saga
Sandman
Sweet Tooth
The Unwritten
Thief of Thieves
Transmetropolitan
Y The Last Man

I'm seriously low attention span though, even the likes of Casanova and Daredevil are too dialogue driven and I switch off.

I did get a bunch of Locke & Key off the back of recommendations here, but not started them yet. LOVING Fables, partly down to enjoy The Wolf Among Us, and partly down to it being adult themed and to do with fairytales.

Tried Chew, couldn't get in to it.

Honestly....Sandman :D

If you can cope with Fables, you should be fine with Sandman, and it's totally in your wheelhouse.

Hellboy, definitely

If you were happy to go a touch...weirder...Shade, the Changing Man and Hellblazer are both superb. Preacher gets highly rated too, but I haven't read it.

The New 52 runs of Swamp Thing and Animal Man are worth a look - they may not be Vertigo branded any more, but the ethos is definitely still the same.

Going a bit wider - The Boys and Marshal Law are both superhero stories which hate superheroes - the Marshal Law deluxe collection is available for around £20 - definitely has it's ups and downs, but stays fun regardless of what nonsense is going on :D

Interested in trying out some of the recommendations in here. Just can't decide whether to get physical copies or digital copies for my tablet.

I've been buying physical but eventually you'll run out of space :(
So for stuff like Batman I will move to digital unless it's a special edition that I really want.

Decent one shots and Image comics I'll definitely buy physical copies

Yeah I can see the appeal of physical copies and they are probably nicer to look at than a digital copy just might run out of storage space. Got loads of space on my micro sd card on my tablet but you can't really show off your collection to someone that way but would be easier to carry round on long journeys etc.

How long do people tend to keep comics for after reading them? As I can't see them having much read again appeal.

I don't see me getting rid of any of mine tbh.

Sometimes it's nice to re read stuff

Read batman & robin v2, it was all right, the whole robin v robin stuff was a bit contrived and the character development is a bit meh.

Catwoman v1, really good story and fun character. Moved at a good old pace and surprisingly brutal too.

Red Hood v1, great stuff, more fun and flippant than others somewhat reminiscent of Deadpool but with a really strong story and good characterisation underneath it all.

Batgirl v2, good again, really like the character and the bad guys and the fact the character is a person with all the frailties which you rarely see in a lot of superhero comics.

Now I've got Catwoman v2 and red hood v2 then onto the death of the family arc, can't wait!

For those who download comics, where do you get them from? Bought the first episode of Y: The Last Man on Comixology but seems it is a cloud-based app and doesn't download them to the tablet itself or SD card.

Installed some comic reader apps that I want to try but can't.

Finished red hood v2, not as strong as 1 but good all the same, interesting seeing a peak of Joker and funny seeing how much they all think Superman is a **** :D

Excited now as today I'v put aside the cash and buying batman, batman and Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Catwoman and Red Hood v3 to cover Death of the Family :D that my reading list sorted for a while!!! :D

Anyone? I have the kindle app downloaded to my tablet but still not sure how it works. It seems you can transfer the files to sd card but its not clear if the downloaded comics are tied down to the kindle app in a format that other comic book reader apps can't open.

I just want to be able to read comics I buy offline for when I don't have wifi access.

Comixology

You could try that

Not had much experience of the kindle app but I would assume that the comics are in a propretary/DRM format that can only be opened by kindle app.

If you've downloaded the file I'm not sure if you'd then need wifi to read it. You could download a free book, turn off wifi on the tablet and then try it.

Already have and wasted £7 on a comic I couldn't read as it stores them in the cloud rather than on the tablet itself.

Well given it a try and other comic book readers can't open the format comic books downloaded from the kindle app are in. A user on another user suggested renaming the extension to another one so will give that a go.

I'll give the turning wifi off a go in a bit. Nothing against the kindle app if it does work offline, just the reader apps I've downloaded look better for organizing them and have more features.

Where else other than kindle store can you legitimately buy digital comics?

Well turns out I was just being an idiot with regards to Comixology, and you can read them offline.

Reading Y: The Last Man at the mo. Am I right in thinking there's only ten volumes?

I read Death of the Family, really good if a little contrived to join in some of the elements.

The opening scene is batman v3 in the police station is down right disturbing :D

The ending wasn't quite what I ecoected but great stuff all the same.

Couple of quick questions:

I want to buy my son a few comics, the New Star Wars canon stuff.

https://www.comixology.co.uk/Darth-...VyaWVzL3ZpZXcvZGVza3RvcC9ncmlkTGlzdC9Jc3N1ZXM

I'd rather buy digital if possible, so presumably this is the best place to buy them? Looking at the website you can only download the pdf's if it has the download symbol beside the comic which that doesn't. Does that mean he always has to be connected to wifi? I'd like to get them for him for holidays and cars journeys etc.

Been a while since I used Comixology, but you could definitely download them to the app and read them offline - perhaps try it with some of the free ones? https://www.comixology.co.uk/free-comics
