* The Comic Book and Graphic Novel thread *

Thanks I will try a couple of the free ones see how he likes it. I'm tempted though to get him book versions due to wanting to limit his time on devices even if it reading. I was looking yesterday on FP's website and their are hundreds of graphic novels under a tenner I think he would enjoy.

I'm so torn between digital to save space or Paper to give him something physical to read :D

I have a huge digital collection and still buy tons of actual books. It's not the same reading on a tablet, especially the splash pages.

Do both - get him some up-to-date stuff digital and some older (cheaper) books.

I need some help if possible. I took my son (Age 5 almost 6) into forbidden planet. He's a prolific reader and he loves all things Marvel (not fussed on DC at all). He spent about 2 hours on the floor of FP treating the place like a library ;)

Now apart from avengers (the ones in the film/cartoon he considers the line up) he also loves Deadpool, Venom and spiderman. I struggled to find anything with deadpool or venom in a graphic novel that could be considered child friendly at 5/6. :D

So he settled on this novel...

https://forbiddenplanet.com/36752-civil-war-hardcover/

Mainly because he saw Iron man and Cap America fighting, which he struggled to get his head around :D Now I asked in store if there was more to this story and the guy behind the counter said "nothing worth reading". It looks interesting and I'm wondering which novel to go for after he's finished this one?

Also if anyone has any recommendations for graphic novels for Spiderman/Avengers that is tied up in a graphic novel or two? I'm not interested in getting him comics that run for a long while. I was confused in FP as their was so many volumes of spiderman stuff I didn't know where to start :o

These are absolutely the place to start:
Little-Avengers, Big Trouble
Giant-Size Little Marvels: AVX
Mini Marvels: The Complete Collection

My daughter got into comics because of the DC versions for these - Tiny Titans and L'il Gotham. All the characters attitudes, powers and relationships mirror those in the mainstream comics, but they have kid problems. They're dead easy to read, but he'll switch over to the standard runs much easier because he'll already get the characters.

Marvel Universe Avengers Assemble Volume 1
Marvel Universe Hulk: Agents of S.M.A.S.H.

Both based on the cartoon shows

For Spiderman specifically, I'd try the Marvel Masterworks: The Amazing Spider-Man - it's reprints of the classic 60s stuff, but it was a gentler child-friendlier time in comic land :D. Plus he'll get loads of the villains origin stories along the way.

For Venom, it's probably best to go right back to the start - Spider-Man: The Complete Alien Costume Saga Book 1 (there's a book 2 as well) collect the whole Venom origin story. I don't remember it being over-complicated or particularly violent, but it will be a step up from the 60s stuff

Thanks so much for the detailed reply, I really appreciate the effort that took. I'm definately going to get him the last two you linked and I think the mini marvels one to begin with.

I was going to go digital but he likes to wake up and read in bed and I really don't want it to be on tablet. Thanks again and if anyone else has any great recommendations I'd love to hear them :)

No worries man - I'm about a year ahead of you in the "raising a future comic geek" stakes, so it's easy to pass it on :D

I forgot to add last night, avoid any "event" comics - Civil War, Siege, AvX, stuff like that. These are crossover events that run through a number of comics. To really keep up with them, they tend to require a huge amount of prior knowledge, so individually they're not easy to read.

Again, older stuff is the way to go - having had a chance to scan my shelves, Infinity Gauntlet and Secret Wars are both good - Gauntlet will be similar to the next Avengers, Secret Wars is where Spiderman gets the Venom costume for the first time.

Secret War/Spiderman back in black when Spidey goes dark is marvellous stuff. Feeds on from the events of Civil War do hard to just pick up but it is really good reading.

Though after the amazing run how they ended it all :o worst move ever, proper Dallas!

Though Sinister Spiderman which isn't far beyond that is great stuff.

I know you are talking Marvel but honestly most of the new 52 DC stuff is amazing. All the bat family comics are great with court of owls, death of the family and the rest.

Sooooo, Anyone going to MCM Comic con this weekend?

I wish :(

Thanks again for the suggestions I will look through them all. Managed to buy this on ebay this morning...

Masterworks volume 1 and 2 for £20, seems a decent enough price considering the cost of each that I found?

That's a good price - they're bigger than normal graphic novels - they have 10-12 issues in, where a standard collection would have about 6 issues for the same cost.

In case you hadn't realised yet, it's not a cheap hobby :D

Yeah the good thing with paypal is it helps me hide the fees amoung other credit card expenditure ;) The venom costume one will be a winner too but that's enough to be going on with. It's his birthday at the end of the month he can buy it himself ;)

When I was a very young child I used to read comics. The Beano and Buster. Now I read proper books with words and everything.

I tried to read the Walking Dead graphic novels and found them lacking. Nothing beats a proper book for building up ideas and for describing environments. A graphic novel to me is just a lazy way of writing and reading.

Well worth you coming into the Comic Book and Graphic Novel thread then

Art galleries must properly enrage you :D

Both have their pluses and minuses, on your reasoning movies are the ultimate definition of lazy reading :p

Graphic novels can capture a lot that book cannot, similarly a book can capture points a graphic novel cannot (generally around emotional depth)

Neither is lazy or better than the other, that's just a daft comment.

Me too! This is only my second trip to a Con first being the London Super Comic Con back in march and both me and my daughter were instantly hooked! :)

Really looking forward to it.

I went last year as well, it was fun.
The smell was atrocious with all that BO.

Some of the merch was a bit naff but it was still fun

Yeah not looking forward to the BO at all!

The one we went to in March was a lot smaller so nowhere near as bad but I have heard MCM can be awful, should still be fun though! :)

My Daughter is dressing up as Harley Quinn and has convinced me to go in costume as well, going to get some funny looks on the train ride there!!! lol :D
