* The Comic Book and Graphic Novel thread *

No worries man - I'm about a year ahead of you in the "raising a future comic geek" stakes, so it's easy to pass it on :D

Thanks again, the set from ebay came today, near perfect unread condition. They look the perfect level for him from browsing inside ( I might even read them myself!). It's his birthday next week, he will love them.

I will take a look at the secret wars stuff. I'm going to get him the death of captain america set because he obsessed about it, I'm also thinking of getting the volumes of ultimate spiderman one a month digitally for him, they look pretty good?

He's about 6 right? He's got no chance with Death of Captain America. It references so many other stories he won't have a clue what's going on.

I've not read a ton of Ultimate Spiderman, but what I have would be fine. It gets very silly when it gets up to the Clone Saga, but that's somewhere up in the 100s issues somewhere. Just bear in mind, it's an alternate universe, so some things are different.

World War Hulk might be another fun one. Hulk gets banished from earth (in Planet Hulk) and comes back angry. It's basically 6 ish issues of punching :D

The ultimate comics are a decent shout as they are so self contained and can easily run through it. Got ultimate Xmen and avengers too.

Death of Cap isn't too bad to pick up, I picked it up and whilst sso me references are a bit vague in the main it is a really good run with some great scenes.

When I was a very young child I used to read comics. The Beano and Buster. Now I read proper books with words and everything.

I tried to read the Walking Dead graphic novels and found them lacking. Nothing beats a proper book for building up ideas and for describing environments. A graphic novel to me is just a lazy way of writing and reading.

That's not really fair. It sounds like you've sampled a single series and then formed an opinion about the rest of the thousands of series out there based on that experience.

Sweeping statement much? :p

The Watchmen won a Hugo award when it was published. And soon after comics were banned from entering the competition.

When The Watchmen won the 1988 Hugo Award for Best Novel, horrified science fiction purists saw to it that graphic material be excluded from consideration.

They're allowed back in now (since 2008), but it just shows the ignorance of some people.

Sample some more, and then form an opinion. ;)

Does anyone read Superman in the new 52? I'm not terribly impressed by it as I find him too vanilla after reading the Bat family but that aside I thought new 52 was a continuation of DC storylines and not a reset? Superman stuff seems to have a Superman with Lois not knowing who he is and they don't have a relationship.

Is this in line with the comic continuity or did Superman reset? Bit confused tbh. On the plus side got volumes 1-4 batman detective comics on the way :)

Yes

:D

Both really - everything reset...except the bits that didn't. It's a new continuity that has parts that match the old one (so Jason Todd still died, Barbara Gordon was still shot by the Joker, etc), but they made most characters younger.

They're actually pretty good at making it clear what was kept, you'll pick it up as you go along.

Read Batman Incorporated v1, wasn't hugely impresssed, when it got going it was good but I found it far too jumpy with little to no indication time/place had changed, especially the first half of the book. Finished well but could have been a lot better.

Also read Batman Detective Comics v1, wow, fantastic stuff. Think it was the best read (bar perhaps the final issue of Death of the Family) of new 52 to date for me. It adds a layer of complexity on top of the normal action in the bat comics and kept me guessing right to the end. Really good stuff.

Used a £50 voucher so still have v2-4 of detective comics to read :D

Recently got into CB/GN's and wow, so many things that look like instant buys but having to limit myself.

Bought a couple of single issues but think I will have to go the TP route to save a bit of money.

First TP purchase was 'Knightfall'

Thanks to this thread I found out about 'Tiny Titans' too, can't wait to read those with my kids!

Please don't hold that against Batman as a whole :D

Knightfall is awful. Really, really awful.

If you want some decent Batman stuff, these are some good ones to start:
Year One
Death in the Family - Jim Starlin/Marv Wolfman (not to be confused with Death of the Family)
Hush (read Death in the Family first)
Killing Joke
Arkham Asylum (Grant Morrison/Dave McKean)
Dark Knight Returns

After that, the current Scott Snyder run of Batman is superb

What's wrong with Knightfall!?

Add Batman: Earth One V1&2 and Batman: The Long Halloween to the list. There's also Dark Victory but I preferred Long Halloween. :)

Disagree, Knightfall is one of my favourite comics. Granted the artwork looks dated but its an old story. Story is great, Bane demonstrates his criminal mastermind and physical prowess as he sets out to take down Batman. The build up of tension and pressure throughout the comic is great.

Apologies if it's been asked before but it's a big thread to go through :)

What would people recommend as some good compilation books for getting started with. I've only read a couple of graphic novels (League of Extrodinary Gentlemen and Watchmen) and want to get into some different series but it can be confusing as a new reader to work out which books are complete stories, which are only parts, which order to go in etc.
I wouldn't mind trying some Batman and possibly X-Men but in general I'm not so interested in the classic superhero type stuff. I've heard good things about the Sandman series so any other suggestions in that kind of area?

Many Thanks,

Ross

I'm reading Deadly Class at the minute. Thoroughly enjoying it.

And you should read sandman before looking at "Sandman type stuff" to see if you actually enjoy it. :p

Y: The Last Man is considered to be up there with the best of them. It's plays out like an action packed TV show with a cliff hanger at the end of most issues. Read it twice now and it is such a fantastic ride. Without a doubt pick that up.
