The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim announced

Oh god i just read through that 'features' list and its sounding even less like an Elder Scrolls game than i first thought...

Melee lock-on? Finishing moves? Blacksmithing?

The Elder Scrolls games have never been huge resource hogs, both Morrowind and Oblivion looked fantastic when they first came out but didn't need mega setups to get them running smoothly at high graphics.

is that a serious post....srsly?

Unlike the previous games where melee combat were free-for-alls prone to friendly fire, “Skyrim” will feature a context-sensitive melee system described as “Magnetism” in the French PSN, where your melee attacks will automatically target foes instead of slashing everything in your path. This is somewhat similar to the autotargeting system in “Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood.”

WHY!?!?!?!?!

I mean ffs, how dumb are the console tards that they even need auto aim assit on ****ing melee, if it's not optional this is going to be a massive annoyance.

either have to "lock on" to attack or go to hit one guy, look at another part way though to check position oh *** sword spun me round and slashed at the air between me and new guy.

* One of the new “Dragon Shout” abilities slows down time, and is similar to Bullet Time.

and there it is bullet time....

It will be possible to raise all skills to the maximum 100 points

So no specialisation nor traditional RPG elements just grind to the top?

Reading that list, it sounds like Bethesda just have no idea how to move the genre forward. It just seems like the same old same old cookie-cuuter fantasy lore game that could apply to anything and has done since Roleplaying began. Getting quests in taverns, ice traps when enemies activate them, breaking into characters houses to steal a bronze candlestick or w.e to sell. It's just more of the same, that whilst good earlier in the decade, and last century is just...dated and boring now. Been there, done that.

The rest of the list as Tefal pointed out just shows how pathetically dumbed down it is. A miss for me.

reads like they're just turning it in to a generic hack an slash action game .

LOL @ the bitching in here. I'm sorry but it makes sense to tailor the game for the 95% of sales going to occur on the consoles. Us 5% who'll buy it on PC just have to suck it.

SO being able to shoot a fireball from your fingertips or summon a skeleton is fine....but being able to slow down time isn't?

Yep, also though "dragon shouts" aren't magic, but with being able to max every skill i suppose that's not an issue that brawlers use magic too.

Also the enemies can throw fire balls but i doubt they can slow you down.

Was the same in Oblivion

And it was silly then too, and in fo 3.

The old rpg games where you had to actually ROLE play and choose to be something at the cost of other skills is meaningless when you just end up the master of everything.

But how many did? How many actually maxed everything in any of those games? I know I didn't, I roleplayed it. It would take a lot of time and dedication to max every skill in Oblivion. So why not let them do it? Doesn't affect you if you want to roleplay it.

^

Exactly, why not just do away with skill points altogether and make it a first person action game, where your weapons scale as you level up. Makes as much sense - more sense.

^Yeah, I anticipate the modding community will smooth out any unlikeable features after some time.
The only question remains is to buy on release, to experience the vanilla game, or wait.

go vanilla for me. the reason i will is because if i know there is a mod to fix something i don't like so much i will download the mod, but then i wont stop and i'll keep downloading mods and end up spending more time modding the game then playing it. if i play it once through without mods then replay it with mods that i like then i'll get the best of both worlds

Fallout 3? It wasn't even difficult to max almost everything by lvl30.

Oblivion yes, but that doesn't change the fact the vanilla levelling system sucked and they seem to have gone out of there way to make Skyrims suck even more just in a completely different way.

If melee 'lock-on' isn't optional i imagine that will be amongst the first mods available. Though tbh i think the game is beyond saving. They've removed attributes, taken out another couple of skills, added in stupid things like blacksmithing and mining (MMORPG grind much?). Still plenty of fun to be gotten from Oblivion with the appropriate mods. My latest char is a Mage with Blade and absorption skills. Something very funny about running upto a bunch of enemies, absorbing all its strength and blade so it can't move then beating it to death with my own summoned sword.

Hardly a conundrum is it? :p

Even if you're sensible and wait for the £9.99 GOTY Edition with all DLC you can still play it vanilla. To be honest you should play it vanilla - then you'll know what to mod [not including UI/graphics mods as they tend to nearly always improve a game].

Wonder what they have planned for DLC...

Something tells me it won't be anywhere near the awesomeness of Shivering Isles...

without tributes and with the fact all skills can be maxed out, then by the end game aside from gear all characters will be pretty much identical?
