The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim announced

i never played morrow wind properly (was too young to understand what the **** was going on) and never struggled with oblivion. there may have been a few books which mentioned the events of morrowind but that was it that i was aware of. nothing story wise in oblivion related to morrowind at all. skyrim i imagine will be the same in that there is nothing to do with oblivion in skyrim but maybe one person will say "hey do you remember those oblivion gates that opened in another part of the world 400 yeas ago?" etc

if you haven't play oblivion i don't see why you don't now as it's a great game with so many mods to make it look even better.

Ok thanks, i might take a look at oblivion then :)

This is one of the games I'm really looking forward to (After BF3 of course) I hope the gameplay demo that they showed at E3 was a true representation of what the game can look/play like. Mostly looking forward to climbing that mountain I saw :).

I've never played the other elder scrolls, do you think I really need to play them to get the story line?

As said, you'll only get subtle nods to the previous games. No knowledge is required to enjoy the story.

You should play them though, just because they're great games. :)

It really doesn't matter if it can be fixed by modding. Modding will often reduce stability and we all know how good Bethesda are at producing stable games. Some mods are incredibly tricky to do, some are downright impossible and some simply don't have the mechanics in the game to make them work as would be liked.
Case in point the 'Impervious Power Armour' mod for Fallout 3. A great sounding mod that should really have been in the game in the first place. Wearing power armour not only reduces damage directly but it also deducts an amount from the damage dealt so someone walking around in T-51b Power Armour can't be killed by a crappy Pistol or a Baseball Bat. Unfortunately the only way to do such a mod was to make the game heal you for the damage taken after it was dealt which caused a whole bunch of problems with it sometimes not working correctly and healing you for small quantities and your limbs still becoming crippled despite the fact you couldn't be harmed.

Some of the things they've removed (for no damn reason) like Birthsigns will be really easy to add in and will no doubt be modded in almost straight after release. Simply add in spell effects like fortify and give the player major/minor powers like before. But changing the interface so it actually looks like it belongs to a PC game might not be so easy (and I'm not talking about just changing font sizes).

Urgh! I have only just got round to watching the 14 mins gameplay, 360 graphics are looking OK for such an old setup. None the less, someone mind lending me £1000 to upgrade my rig to play this on PC? lol...

Simply cannot wait to play this!

EDIT: my post reads like a troll. Not intended at all, I am genuinely gutted my rig will buckle at it's knees and beg for mercy! Wish I kept hold of my 8800 GTX sli setup :(

My plan is to do a run through on vanilla and then a rerun about 2 years later when mods are a plenty and console gamers are playing COD 18.

You don't get many large scale mods out that soon. Not to mention they'll still be releasing DLC (which will look pathetic going up against the likes of Bloodmoon/Tribunal and Shivering Isles as I have my doubts they're going to really put some effort into it) 6 months after release and maybe even still be getting ready to release a patch which might mess with mods too.

Mods can only do so much.

I' say 2-3 years is about right, that's when all the best mods are out and it's at it's peak. There wasn't much more of note after 2009 for Oblivion

My God this game looks ****ing amazing! I'm already thinking of excuses of not going out on the weekend so I can stay in and play this, God knows how many hours people will sink into this beast.
