The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim announced

Right I spent 1k gold on a horse at the stable in Whiterun (sick of taking ages to get anywhere!) and I did the dragonshout thingy at the top of the mountain but got duffed up by the frost troll on the way a few times which scared my horse who promptly ran off. Is there anything I can do to get it back or is that 1k gold down the tubes? :(

You probably already noticed, but the horse you bought will be available at the stables again, or whenever you fast travel to a location. Unless you manage to get him killed falling off a cliff etc, in which case.. you need to buy another one.

The troll is probably a soft difficulty cap - and by that, I mean its a warning that you should probably level up more before continuing.

On my first playthrough I was already able to easily beat it by the time I decided to walk up that mountain :p

I recall struggling the first time I met the troll, so when I re-loaded, I turned and ran back down the mountain to where an NPC was at one of those worshipping stones. She engaged the troll in melee while I pelted it with fireballs!

Shame this game is broken beyond belief. 18mb saves or above seem to cause endless CTD's. My character is totally unplayable now after hundreds of hours invested into this game. Desperatley hoping for a patch to address this issue...

I'd recommend everyone playing this game start using the Skyrim deadbody retimer mod that's on Nexus to avoid save game bloat that will inevitably ruin your game..

Are you sure your problems are related to game save size? This should be a non issue on the PC version. My save is around 13MB and it's fine at the moment.

The below tweak sorted out the bad performance near and in major city areas, for me anyway.

IMO Skyrim is the greatest video game ever created, it's that good. So much depth and detail for a massive game, yes the IQ is more 2006 standards than 2011 on PC, just don't look to close and the game does look stunning at times. I can look past that and appreciate the thing that matters most in any game, the gameplay.

Positive. 18mb is where it all falls apart. CTD every 20-30 seconds. Beth forums are full of people with this issue.

I've been playing this game for 6 and a half weeks now, trying not to do too much of the main story quests, (but I've unavoidably done some) and mostly doing side quests and errands. If I finish the main story too quickly, I may lose interest in side quests. And tbh, I want to keep the side quests going to prolong my interest in the game. When I get sick of the side quests I'll get properly stuck into the main thing. But out of curiosity about the main storyline quest,
my current main quest is 'The Throat of the World', having just deciphered Alduin's Wall with Esbern and Dephine, in the Sky Haven Temple. I next have to go back to the Graybeards and speak to Arngeir, about learning a new shout that killed Alduin.
So roughly how far into the main quest am I? Long way to go or not? I hope there is a long way to go still.:)

Having trouble pick pocketing an item for the thieves guild. It says 16% to steal - is that my chances, or the level I need? I have 40% pickpocket potion and a 38% pickpocket ring and I'm fully hidden when attempting, but I get caught every time :(

Is it like sneak where it goes back to a low level if beyond 100?

Damn. I better stay away from it then for a bit longer.
It was quite late on before I got round to finishing the main quest, at least 70 hours in. Not that it matters one bit in Skyrim, it really is no more than just another quest to do.

I have trouble with these too. On the last guy I tried, everything else on him was 70-90% chance of success, the actual item I wanted was 0%. The game doesn't do a very good job of explaining when you should be trying these (beyond the obvious your chance of success is literally zero so don't even bother).

The odds of pickpocketing may change when you scroll items in NPC's inventory that you want to loot, therefore it is sometimes better to scroll the inventory until the displayed chances for the item you want to steal satisfies you the most.
This may actually be due to the NPC chosen to pickpocket being aware of you or not. If the chosen NPC is unaware of you the chance of pickpocketing is raised.
A character might face a bug with Pickpocket after taking Rank 5 of the Light Fingers perk. Instead of raising the stealing chance this perk can instead drop it to zero when trying to steal large amounts of gold (around 1600-1700). For example, if you use a trainer to train Archery from 57 to 58, you can use Pickpocket to get your money back. When you have Rank 4 of the Light Fingers perk the odds are about 62% but if you take Rank 5 they suddenly drop to zero!
The same applies to apparel that fortifies pickpocketing - bonuses from apparel and potions may drop the chance, including all the way to zero (if a character already has the Rank 4 Light Fingers perk), rather than increasing.

So yeah its a little dodgy. Sounds more like your pickpocket skill is just grap though? 16% is pretty low either way.

Apparently there are some items that break the system and have 0% chance. Sure I saw a mention of a staff someone has that is 0% because of its value.

Yeah I noticed that too. I was trying to steal back an amulet as the quest was bugged. I think becuase it was a quest item (that the NPC would later convert to the necromancy amulet) it was made impossible to pickpocket. I just did the player.additem command and got it that way :D

Yeah my pickpocket skill is only ~40, so need to work on that :D

Just finished that quest, had to use console commands because it bugged for me in a whole different way. Not sure if the pickpocketing is a bug or not, it does seem that way, but then I've not been successful yet at a fishing job so there could be a legitimate reason for it.

Skyrim is probably the most bug ridden game I've ever played, but the game is so big and offers so much that I find it easy to forgive (save for the constant CTD's which were starting to become extremely tiresome at one point), a lot of the glitches are outright funny. After a couple failed attempts at a dark brotherhood job, I finally took out the target and escaped the town bounty free. I went straight back in because I had other stuff to do, only to find my follower waging war on the guards of Markarth for absolutely no reason, I left him to it :D.

True. But to me it's kind of game over when a game's main story is done and dusted, since side quests don't really have any purpose then. But I don't know, I might keep going after I finish it. I'm loving it at the moment so I don't want to get to that point for a long time. I never turn down any jobs I'm given and though I'm getting through them, there's still plenty left in my journal to keep me busy for a while :p

Question: While I was at Labrynthian,..
,..after completing Shalidars Maze (which was a great quest), I discovered a room called Bromjunaar Sanctuary where I picked up a magical wooden mask. When I wear it, it transports me to the same room but at a time before it was in ruin. There's 8 artifacts, (4 either side of a central icon and looking like 8 divines) with buttons to press but I don't have the required items yet. So is this some quest that I might be given by someone later on, or is what I need already at Labrynthian and I need to search for these 8 items?

I don't think you are given this quest directly, but the 4 items at either side are slots for the masks you get for killing the dragon priests (you meet them in dungeons and sometimes while looking for words of power from Arngier quests). When you have all 8 masks go back there and put the masks in the slots. You get a secret item. :D

Ah, I see! Thanks. Yeah I have the morokei one from a fight a while back. Cool! :D
