The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim announced

You made a video with top-end gear and enchantments... it was hardly relevant. At lvl20 I had trouble with 1 Draugr Scourge. Now at lvl38 I'm doing the main quest and have had fights with 5 at once and survived without any real problems even if it does take a good 10-15 seconds to kill one.

 Huh? You said you found wraiths very difficult to kill with spells. I showed you a book I found that recommended killing them with a blade. You don't necessarily need a daedric sword of scorching to dispatch them fairly quickly either, any half decent sword will do it. Two or 3 connecting swipes of a sword will probably be faster than some useless spell which is why I've gone more the warrior route than mage. More satisfying and quicker to kill.

Has anyone managed to max smithing without going down the iron daggers / smithing route? I've managed to get it to level 80 without resorting to cheesy tactics, but it seems to be giving diminishing returns now.

I maxed mine by smacking every deer/wolf/bear I saw and making shed loads of leather armour. Slightly less cheesy than just buying iron or whatever.

It was a FIRE enchanted DAEDRIC sword dealing 91 base plus 31 fire which Ice Wraiths are no doubt 100% weak to so thats 153 damage per attack, not including power attacks and spells in the vanilla game are severely underpowered compared to the extremely broken mechanics that can enhance weapon damage to insane levels with x% stronger enchantments, smithing bonus and enchantments.

They are not 'weak to physical damage' so what exactly are you trying to prove? A top end sword with a powerful fire enchantment can kill fragile ice based enemies? Ice Wraiths don't have much health compared to most creatures but they do have a very powerful spell based attack and if your melee weapon isn't strong enough to kill them in a few hits they will easily kill you first without very strong frost resistance.

I had assumed by the type of posts you've made throughout this thread, a lot of which are how knowledgeable you are about the game, that you were an experienced player at a high level. That, along with playing on master difficulty made me think you must be pretty skilled with plenty of good armour, powerful weapons and enchantments. So with those things in mind, I was actually just trying to help you by showing you how easy it is with a decent weapon. But nevermind eh?

You are aware that to reach a high level you have to start at a low level right?

I started on Expert with my 1H+Shield Warrior, dropped it to Adept for the fight with the Volunruud boss because it was absolutely impossible, then later on after playing another couple of characters when I upped it to Master, came back to it and stuck to fighting Bandits and avoiding creatures because they were too powerful until I'd gained some more levels, perks and smithing improvements.
The only major mistake I'd made was to not bother enchanting any of my lower tier armour/weapons even if the enchantments were quite weak.
Only one thing has killed me in a long time now (and that was a stupid finishing move that worked while I was on 30% health and not paying attention). Now that I've upgraded to Ebony Armour/Daedric Weapons, given Mjoll a set of Dragonbone Armour and stuck some average strength enchantments on my armour along with a couple of reasonably strong enchanted artefacts, on top of putting some perks into Restoration so I get cheap, strong heals that restore stamina, I don't have any problems at all but don't just stroll through tough fights with severely over enchanted/smithed gear.

As a side note, the wiki said something about the block arrows perk being broken and how it blocks 85% damage from all sources instead of just working on arrows which explains why block is so much more effective later on.

Don't be so smug. Like I said, the way you've posted in this thread would make anyone assume you were already tough enough to kill wraiths easily. I tried to help you and you're just rude back.

No, if you were actually trying to offer advice you'd be doing so using things available at the level I was referring to. "Hit them a few times with a top tier sword with a powerful fire enchantment" is not advice on how to deal with them. Its just saying you can overpower them with brute force if you have strong enough equipment.
How did I deal with them at the time? I ran around in circles using Fire Breath when it recharged and let Lydia kill them who oddly enough seemed to be taking next to no damage, rarely risking a melee attack because of how much damage the ice spell could do if I didn't kill/stagger them so they couldn't retaliate since I was only hitting for 40 damage. It was just annoying because I could then clear out entire bandit camps no problem but had trouble with 2 Ice Wraiths.

1.4 beta patch has raised my min fps to my vsync of 60 permanently now, so big plus from me. Theres a few points in the game where my FPS dips regardless of settings, including looking at riverwood and across whiterun from the dragonreach. Both areas are stuck at 60fps and I'm not even using the skyrim optimised drivers. Very impressed by the patch so far due to that :D

I find that the sound is messed up in this game the amount of times I have turned around to find a Mob has sneeked up on me without a sound is crazy - no good for my nerves!

It's pretty scary when you're casually strolling through the wilderness and turn round to see a honking great wolf attacking you all of a sudden.

At least Oblivion saved you your dignity by playing "angry attack music" when you walked into the aggro zone of a mudcrab.

Guys, I switched on the beta participation for Skyrim this morning on Steam, then did a restart but nothing happened? Any idea if that is normal and then the update kicks in after a set amount of time?

Does the patch do the same thing that skyboost/TESVAL do?

Yup, and more.

I have a Core2Duo, so despite having a decent GPU (6870) I've been suffering poor framerate in certain areas. Been using Skyboost, but the 1.4 patch is even better.

Here are the FRAPS stats (min / max / average) over a 30 second period walking down from the top of Whiterun around by the tree.

Pre-patch: 9 / 34 / 21
Pre-patch with Skyboost: 13 / 36 / 25
1.4 Beta: 25 / 63 / 45

Getting a solid 60fps outside, on high settings with the actor draw distance maxed. Feels like a completely new game.

Happened right away for me. I edited the settings to join the BETA, and it prompted me to restart Steam. And when I did it started downloading the 1.4 update; 100mb-ish.

Endless Game?

I just realised today I've been playing Skyrim for six weeks and still seem nowhere near finishing it. (Saints Row 3 has lain unplayed on the HD since Xmas Day).

What are the "core" campaigns/mission sets I need to finish to draw things to a close? It seems at the moment I still have new mission sets or factions spawning. Not a complaint as the game is probably one of the best ever released in terms of VFM, but I would like to be able to put it to bed now and start a replay later in the year.

I'm making headway in the main story now (Blades) because I'm in much the same situation. I have other stuff I want to play and I'd like to come back to it again with a completely different character. :) Level 32 and I'd been avoiding doing the main questline.

I'm constantly amazed at how varied and detailed all the dungeons are - it's a quantum leap away from Oblivion and it's generic copy & paste ones! :D

Cheers for that. Just got home and fired up steam...only to see it downloading a 3GB+ update for Assassins Creed: Revalations fs. I am in the Skyrim beta but so far am getting nothing :/
