I'll weigh in on the side of SkyUI. Started playing again recently and find that without it I can't properly organise and find what I want.

Particularly like the ability to sort lists by the various attributes (weight, value etc) and the search functionality so I can just type the first few letters of what I'm looking for.
 
I wonder if anyone can help me...

For the past few weeks I've been having issues with Skyrim. I decided I would make a new character so I started a new game with all the same settings and mods installed as my previous character, but the game caused my computer to lock up while I was going through the character creation process (choosing race, name, ect), and I then need to force a reboot.

I assumed it would be due to an outdated mod or one that could only work with my previous character, so I disabled all mods including the DLC and high-res textures but the game still caused my computer to freeze up.

I've tried to validate the game files and there is always 1 file that fails to validate but it doesn't download anything. I have reinstalled the game twice and that doesn't fix the issue. I've updated my graphics and audio drivers too.

Specs are:

Intel i5 2500k
16GB ram
MSI 2GB 6950 Twin Frozr edition
Windows 7 64bit
Game installed on Crucial M4 128GB SSD (Also tried installing it on my normal games drive but that also caused crashing)

I'm at a loss. I've tried everything to no avail.
 
ok two things....

- The one file that downloads and doesn't seem to do anything - I had that too. Doesn't seem to matter, and I read a forum post last week that Beth themselves have said it doesn't do anything either.

- As regards to the freezes, before you do anything at all, are you using BOSS?

I'm using onboard sound so I don't think that is it.

Not sure what BOSS is, so gonna say no.
 
Go to the Nexus, search for BOSS, download and install, then run BOSS gui. It sorts out your load order. Its the first thing you do before fault finding anything else.

After that, if your crashing on the create character right at the beginning, disable the mods in your list that relate to skin / body / hair mods, then re enable them one by one after creating character. I've had this too, and had to do that to fix.
 
I don't have any mods installed at the moment, even the DLC is disabled. It's a completely clean install and is still causing the freezing issue which is why I am confused. Before creating a new game it was working perfectly.
 
When you reinstalled did you delete the Skyrim folder? If you delete local content from Steam then it might be leaving bits of old mod. Also delete the Skyrim ini files in My Docs/Games.

Yep I removed the Skyrim folder and also backed up then deleted the entire Skyrim folder from the games folder.

Bingo.

I can start the game without issue but then during the character creation sequence my computer freezes up and I need to force a reboot. Sometimes it happens when in the cart, sometimes when choosing a race/name, sometimes when running away from the dragon, ect.

It's odd as I can run other Bethesda games without issue, such as New Vegas.

Update all Drivers
Redownload the full game
Run game in a window and see if it still locks up the PC

If the full pc locks up a would say hardware problem or driver problem
I am having a problem atm with only one game [ Path of the Exile ] only that game crashes but I know its my Motherboard.

If only the game crashes then its skyrim or gfx card or sound

These are just my ideas normaly gets me out of problems :)
