The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim announced

Question is, do you get this issue with no mods? I suspect you are probably running into VRAM issues.

dunno, haven't played vanilla in so long. although tbh i'm amazed I've managed to get this far on my current setup.

@Aesir I do have wet and icy installed, haven't got frostfall loading but I do have it, funny you should say that as wet and icy was one of my latest mod downloading binges.

I tried that mod and it seems to have improves the stutter, now to fix the screen tearing :p

I bought this game in the Steam sales, mainly to see what the fuss was about. I've never much cared for RPG's but figured what the heck...

well damn me if it isn't the most engrossing thing I've played in more years than I care to remember. It simply sucks my time away... I have to sleep soon, 8 hours of unconciouness when I could be in Whiterun, what a waste...

anyway getting to to the point something very strange happened to me today a dragon only the 2nd one I've seen lands in Whiterun, right next to my house! I was completely stunned, I literally had to pick up the bones after it had been killed and walk in teh door... but even stranger was when I came out the dragon wasn't a skeleton anymore but had flesh back on the bones! I poked it a bit to make sure it was dead it seemed to be.. next time I came out it had disappeared completely! Do they respawn and fly off if so why no commotion from the townsfolk? Is this supposed to happen or is it a bug?

Only slightly less strange is when I bought my house, unlocked the door went upstairs to my empty house and opened what I thought was a cupboard only to find that Lydia bint standing there! Got a hell of a shock. She's taken up lodgings in a room of my house! I have a squatter!

My companion is the elf from Riverside so I was like wtf is she doing here?! She keeps coming up to me and saying things like "how can I help you my lord?" and I keep replying "you can help me by getting the **** out of my house!" she doesn't seem to take a hint though.

Its an astonishing game but very strange at times.

Lydia is a Housecarls, she's basically a servant, you get one after becoming Thane of each major settlement. At first they stay in the Jarls place but once you buy a house they move in there.

Missed the summer sale - I already own the base game but none of the DLC and haven't played for well over a year. It's a joke that the Legendary edition is cheaper than buying all 3 DLC separately...

Should I just install the base game, mod that and wait for a sale on the DLC, or is any of it really worth spending what I consider to be a ridiculously high price on?

Edit: I see the LE can be had much cheaper as a physical box; shame I prefer not to have a box at all...

I'm in a similar position to you Curunen. I recently installed the base game along with some mods and was quite enjoying it. However I've found a few of mods I want to install require the DLC so kinda torn between waiting out for a discount on the DLC or just buying the legendary edition (it is lame that it work outs far cheaper). I think I am going to just buy the legendary edition

Where is that from? Cheapest I can find from my brief search is £17.99.

Incidentally the boxed edition requires steam so you can just throw the box away :)

Anyone know how to find the that darn talking dog, Barbas was his name I think? He ran off and I havn't seen him since.

I've been to the Haemars Shame place and cleared out a nest of vampires, I assume that was part of the quest, was surprisingly straightforward. Either its getting easier or I suck less at it :P

The quest says he's waiting for me outside the shrine but theres no sign of him every time I return, is there anyway to force him to spawn there? Its a long way around Skyrim back to the Jarl's place and I honestly can't be bothered retracing my steps over half of Skyrim looking for him.

edit: just climbed to the top of a mountain, Shearpoint I thinki it was and there was a dragon asleep draped over another peak! I put an arrow into him got some sort of sneak achievement, anyway he circled around landed a couple time and while it was busy trying to incinerate my companion I pumped it full of arrows, must have put a dozen into him before he went down. Wow, just wow. this game is astonishing, it just takes gaming to a whole other level.

That's the whole point of buying a bundle, to save on multiple purchases . Besides, you're talking about a game that is almost two years old, which includes a piece of DLC that is also over a year old and another piece of DLC which should have been included in the base game anyway (and is also available as a free mod).

DLC, NOT including the base game...

I could understand if you total up the price of ALL the included items separately, however were talking ONLY the 3 pieces of DLC being more expensive than the LE.

Edit: What I mean to say is the LE is not purely a DLC bundle - the joke is that for people who already own the base game, it's cheaper to buy the LE to get all the DLC only (and NOT get a free copy of skyrim to gift...) than it is to buy DLC separately.

Finally completed the Dawnguard storyline this morning. I celebrated in unorthodox fashion by reinstalling windows and deleting all of my old heavily modded Skyrim saves. :D

I've had enough of taking an absolute beating as a melee/archer type on legendary, so I'm going to play a scantily clad mage next time around. My mod collection is getting rather sordid as a result.

What else was you expecting? You are playing on legendary after all :p.

I remember when I tried playing it on a new character. I got to whiterun and got the first quest off the companions where you have to go to a bandit camp about 20 seconds north-west of whiterun gate. I got burned down to the ground in about 3 seconds by a mage :(.

Any mage players have words of wisdom?
I usually play a hybrid combat/stealth character and wanted to try a magic character.

I see a few options available:

  • Playing pure mage only using magic and wearing robes. Obviously such a character would be quite weak defence wise and would require a companion or use of summoned creatures to act as a distraction.
  • Play as a battle mage, using light or heavy armour to reduce the weakness in defence. I don't think stealth is an option for mages so I would probably go for heavy armour (which has a higher stealth penalty).

I was also wondering, should this character use spells or in fact make use of staffs, which seem to be available in abundance. I guess you could have a mage that concentrates more on enchanting and does not spec in any spell lines.

As far as magic goes, I am thinking destruction (fire) and restoration for the pure mage to provide maximum damage and healing.

My advice, get some mods for the magic stuff. Vanilla is very boring after a while.

Other than that, don't stick to normal spells, lay down traps before hurling a fireball at your foes. Enchanting is your best friend.

There is a mod called better magic that is fairly well endorsed on the nexus, which looks like a must if want to be a mage. If you put that on though you loose the god level enchanting ability. Shame.

Also one that makes the default sparks flames spells expert level.

In my opinion, to be a mage and keep it interesting you would need to master at least five skill trees to higher levels. i think it would be very difficult to get to higher mage levels without using the console.

In my current game I am level 58 I think (DG and DB completed, main, assassins, thieves, Companions to do). Master of all magic + Enchanting twice. Almost master of Destruction twice after making it legendary. And once you have the expert and master level spells levelling the skill up again is quite easy; as each time you cast you go up a few levels to start with.

Using that Better Magic mod, though I think you need to up the difficulty to expert if you do, it does make magic quite a bit better.

A nice mod for the mage robes: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/35002/?, though it comes in many pieces, and if you use it mid way through a game the College of Winterhold may be full of naked people :).

any good mods that level the loot rewards to your level as you go on.

would like to collect/use lots of ancient/legendary artifacts but it's annoying when as they;re rewarded for quests you quickly outlevel them. would be ncie to bring them abck upt otspec every so often

Im sticking with leather bikini clad barbarian. Must be honest though, once ive maxed out two handed and archery i might move over to mage skills with that better magic mod. Sounds like it solves the whole mage problem, i.e at higher levels you have no chance against the likes of the forsworn briarhearts

Yeah Forsworn are a bugger for mages as they are all Bretons so have 25% magic resist.

You could temper/enchant them to make them usable at the later levels.
