The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - MODS & TWEAKS

Oh yea ENB effects are very subjective! What looks great to me looks like hippo-poop to someone else :D Best thing is to use a preset as a jump-off point to tweak until you get an effect you like. The effect I have is deliberate. I wanted an unrealistic fantasy-look...kind of trying to replicate TERA or something!

I dont know about scripted mods...interesting! Can u post a link to one? I just whack my entire Skyrim data folder on an external HD just in case...along with the game saves. But Steam has a v good backup function too!

It did remind me a little bit of Rift's art style, but too vibrant for Skyrim as a province I thought :p and I just googled TERA because I'd never heard of it and with all those 3d rendered boobies I felt like I was 13 again :( haha.

I'm trying to think of the most heavily scripted Skyrim mod, SkyUI was the first one to take advantage of the script extender by tweaking the engine, but it isn't game breaking if you don't use the SKSE. Most of the big name mods like WARZONES and SkyUI have failsafes incase you launch via the TES.exe and not SKSE.exe so no damage is done, its the smaller less endorsed files that are dangerous.

For the most heavily scripted one though I think you'd have to look at DSpSoB - Dual Sheaths plus Shields on Back (creative name huh :p) and The Dance of Death killmove pack/mod. Backup before using those though, one tiniest little file in the wrong folder and you'll be nuking Skyrim off your machine and reinstalling. :p

EDIT: I think I've found the craziest one! The Flintlock Pistol! :p I think its a decent mod tbh, it doesn't really break immersion or lore and suits the game quite well, the Dwemer could have easily invented something like this.

Also, I'd highly recommend getting the Craftable Dragonbone Weaponry mod, as it basically should have been in the game from the start in my opinion.

Another great one is the Dread Knight's Weaponry mod.

This is something that should have been in the game from day one too: Greatsword Scabbard Mod.

I also think the Weapon Variation Mod is really cool too, basically it adds a whole ton of weapons and shields to the game, and what it does is basically add one handed weapons with the look of the two handed weapons and vice versa, with some resized shields, they don't replace anything at all, they just appear in some loot, on some enemies and dotted around the world, my personal favorite! Nothing complicated is required, just install with the Mod Manager, same with all the weapon packs.

Oh, and if you want all of the weapon packs you download to properly integrate into the game, and appear properly on enemies depending on level (so you won't have any Bandit's running around with 500 damage swords at level two :p) you'll have to use Wyre Bash. It's simple enough to use mate, and if you don't really wanna bother using yet another 3rd-party program to sort out mods, you can play without doing this, you might just get turned into red mist by some low level Bandit. :p

Also, if you haven't already, use Better Oblivion Sorting Software (B.O.S.S) to properly order your esp and esm files to avoid mod conflicts and speed up loading times. Extremely easy to use mate, just one click and it does it all for you, and gives you a log afterwards explaining whats happened.

Thanks for all the help on ENB, after a lot of tinkering, and fiddling, it's still not giving me what I want :(

So going to stick with mods only I think.

Like the cold bland look, makes me feel like I am in the cold.

You know, when it's winter, everything feels slightly... Grey. In the summer, vibrant. So this game has the right color pallet I think :)

ENB's aren't necessarily to change the feel or look of the climate, there are several vanilla ENB's that do nothing except enhance shaders and make textures and models look much much much much much much much much much much higher quality. Playing without an ENB is like playing last gen compared, Skyrim is so ugly standard.

@ Omaeka - wow thatnsk for all that awesome info dude :D Reading thru it right now Im totally gonna try out some of those mods. The weapon and scabbard ones look neat...and so does the flintlock lol! I think Im starting to understand what this "scripted" thing is all about - these are not simpole graphical "eye-candy" mods...they actually change the underlying gameplay itself?...no wonder they can fry the game if something goes wrong. I think before I mess with them Ill do the full backup of game on Steam!! And on a DVD to make sure ahaha!

I have heard of this but never really paid attention to it...its the rival to Skyrim Mod Manager? (I dont have that either!). Ive just been whacking my downloads into the main Skyrim folder, no ill effects...but I guess I should get Wyre before getting more complex mods! Is the Wyre GUI nicer than MM? Well...gunna be a late night lol.

@ agnes - glad you settled on something, ENB is great but you can spend forever playing with the sliders to try to get it the way you want. I would advise looking for an ENB preset thats closest to what you want and just download that. At least this way youre 70% of the way there....rest you just tweak!

Exactly :p simple texture mods rarely mess things up (except in Oblivion, you had to do an ungodly amount of tweaking and patching to get the game to accept the new textures, but it made Oblivion look way ahead of its time) whereas scripted mods actually change existing or add new 'scripts' which is anything from a dragon spawning, and entering the world, to pressing the loot key on a body and the inventory opening up. Skyrim is built on scripts, and the extender allows the game to read and make use of user created ones, its mind boggling how usually unqualified programmers can do such advanced things.

As for B.O.S.S, Nexus Mod Manager and Wyre Bash, they are all stand alone and work perfectly together, I personally use the Mod Manager to install most mods (ones that are NMM compatible obviously :p). Wyre Bash to patch the mods which stops script conflicts and updates the level lists (what loot is available on enemies and in shops at what level) among a ton of other things.

B.O.S.S should always be ran last, as it is primarily for putting the mods in the most efficient load order. To think that even when you get to this depth of using mods, you've still only scratched the surface.

I could never go back to Vanilla.

Cool thanks, didnt know that MM, WB could be used together. So they compliment each other then. I think Im gonna get them!

The scary thing about all this Skyrim modding business is.....

....I think I sadly spend MORE time tweaking the dang game rather than playing it. Its a rare day when I can sit and just ENJOY the game. Instead 5mins into a game you hear the voice in your head "I think you need more real looking water and better stone textures & while youre at it get some nicer swords"

Haha yeah that's so true, the good thing is that once you've spent hours modding (I'm probably on my 10th or so hour, and on my 4th clean reinstall :p) you get to experience one of the best gaming experiences you can!

Incase you didn't know about console commands, press the `/¬ key above Tab and to the left of 1, to open the ingame console and there are plenty of useful commands. A full list of the commands can be found here

My favorite is player.setscale with a number, 1 being the default size for your race. My Nord is about 1.07 which puts him a little bit taller than the High Elves by a few inches, which is cool as its nice to feel like you really are more powerful than everyone else, especially as a warrior like myself. I've found that every 0.1 equates to about 2 or so inches in height and what looks about erm, about 5kg in weight? Characters do get wider as they get taller, but it scales, so look the same as before you make them taller, just... taller. :p

Oh and the setscale command does increase melee damage, jump height and your damage reduction, but only by minuscule amounts so it is far from cheating, haven't even noticed the difference personally, but then again I do use the Duel Combat Realism combat system overhaul.

Which can be found here. What it does is increase the effectiveness of shields, make characters take far more damage when low on stamina, so it means you have to be smarter in combat, and also majorly increases the A.I to make it attack you when your low on stamina and conserve their own. Makes it pretty scary sometimes knowing that if you use a big heavy warhammer, you better make the shot count or your gonna get gutted for being out of stamina. :p

EDIT: DO NOT use the realistic ragdoll mod with the Dual Sheath plus Shield on Back, it doesn't break anything but the offhand weapon sheath is between the characters feet on the floor, and looks very peculiar, and the shields don't go on the characters back. Choose one or the other (personally I'd choose DSpSoB, which I have)

Hi guys & Girls

I have just recently got myself a copy of this game. I will be installing it tonight, I was wondering if I should do the modding? I have never done anything like this before EVER - Also what would be the best build for a Noob Skyrim player?

Yes.

Yes.

Also, yes.

Skyrim is horrific without mods to be honest, it was one of the reasons I got a proper PC in the first place, although you might wanna play through using only a few mods first, that way you can truly appreciate what a large range of mods actually do.

I can walk you through modding if you'd like, xOmaeka or Omaeka on Steam, not sure how you find people on there via username, whether its their nick or actual steam name.

First build, for a noob player... Well there really isn't a great deal of applied skill to this game, but I'd rate Magic & Archery significantly higher than Melee in terms of difficulty, for the pure fact that you might struggle to begin with quite a bit mainly due to damage per second falling considerably for every shot you miss (any build can survive on Novice difficulty regardless of almost anything, though).

So if you want a really easy time of it, choose Melee, but in general, so long as you don't play above Adept you should do quite well using any staple class or any hybrid of the three. Heck you can even be a Melee/Magic/Archery build but I wouldn't recommend it as you'll spread your skills quite thin and won't really pack much of a punch with any given style.

I am offended reading this comment!

It's one of the best designed games ever IMO. Certainly not horrific without mods. I got over 120 hours on the 360 version and loved every bit.

So did I! Have you experienced what the game is like with the best and optimal mods? Have you tried Skyrim vanilla or very lightly modded afterwards? I've been a fan of TES for the same amount of time I have been Resident Evil, but I know enough about the PC titles to know they are all horrific games vanilla compared to modded.

I agree. We always get this with FO/TES games. People forget that they are brilliant already, and Skyrim particularly needs few mods

Help following patch 1.6........

Okay, so my Skyrim automatically patched itself to the latest 1.6 - cheers for that! Now suddenly my graphiocs seem totally toilet and I can't work out why.

I've got over 100 mods - have followed STEP quite closely with a few extra stuff thrown in for good measure.

Graphics were superb....then it updated, so I got the new SKSE and was playing straight away, but the graphics are terrible - first thing I noticed is everything is brighter....but it's the detail on things - looking at the ground and there isn't the same level of detail and as you get close to rocks they look very low res.

So I completed deleated all textures and meshes and installed my backup ones - which should have returned it as before - no change.

So I started to re-do STEP from the beginning - was checking graphics as I went and could see each change having an impact and by the time I'd finished the correct textures were there, but they just looked so low res. ie the biggest improvement from my textures is the short turf like grass from Skyrim realistic overhaul - it looks the same just big and poor detail now.

Really frustrated. Anyone any idea what might have happened? Or what to try to narrow down the prob?

It's as if I'm not playing it in 1,900 x1,200 anymore! First thing I checked. Although everything in the distance seems spot on - it's only close up. and the general brightness.

Thanks!

Nic

Could you provide a screenshot and details of what graphical mods you are using aswell as the exact patch number you are running?

I can try - how do you take screen shots?

Pretty much using every mod in the STEP guide if you have access to that. Think the STEP guide is 1.5.26?

Will have a butchers tonight.

Just weird it suddenly started to look worse after the latest skyrim update - how could this have affected my texture files like this? Especially as I deleted them and re-copied all the old ones back.

Even my wife could tell it wasn't as good!!! and she's utterly useless at spotting the completely obvious!

lol :p Press F12 in game to take a screeshot with Steam, if it doesn't work then use a free program like FRAPS. It could be a number of reasons, I'd invalidate your validation archive with Wyre Bash, and create a bash patch. That could fix it.

Invalidate your validation archive with Wyre Bash? wtf ?!!!

That means nothing to me I'm afraid!

ALso never used Wyre Bash - looks a bit scary!

Will take some sreenies and see if there's a prob.

Bit annoyed as finally got it looking awesome and was really enjoying playing it.

Cheers

I use 2k Textures, all High apart from the terrain pack of which I use the lower res package.

My specs:
i5 2500 3.3GHz
8GB DDR3
5850 1GB

Outdoors, I get anywhere between 40-60FPS and in towns I generally get about 50-60FPS apart from the odd drop here and there.

My launcher settings are:
AA - 4X
AF - 12X

Everything else is on high with all view distance turned up.

I'm just wondering... Is their anything I can change without making the game look ugly to have a constant 60FPS outdoors? Or is that just simply down to my graphics card?

Thanks
