The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - MODS & TWEAKS

I'm going to start fresh with this. Got bored with my level 42 character last time who just cuts through everything like butter.

Aside from the mods in the OP which are a great start, I'll be keeping an eye on the thread again for anything new. :)

I haven't played my heavily STEP modded skyrim in almost a year! Going to have to sit through the 15 hours of modding again I reckon. Or should I just hold off for STEP 2.3?

ummm so i'm a bit daunted by the size of this thread and the amount of options.

Bought Skyrim recently via Steam sale. Never played it, RPG games are not my norm so what would simple mods would you recommend for someone new to the game?

There might be some better replacements for these now as I've not played it in awhile but IMO these are pretty mandatory without changing the style or gameplay mechanics:

High Res Texture Pack
Better Dynamic Snow
Milky Way Galaxy
Pure Waters
Lush Grash
HQ Snow Texture
Enhanced Distant Terrain
Cartographers Map

I'd also reccomend tweaking and/or adding these SkyrimPrefs.ini settings:

Under [interface]:

fMouseCursorSpeed=1.2

Under [controls]:

fMouseHeadingSensitivity=0.0220
fMouseHeadingYScale=0.0220
fMouseHeadingXScale=0.0220
bMouseAcceleration=0

Can adjust to taste but espeically the cursor speed one you will want a bit higher than default. I believe that the mouse up/down sensitivity is still bugged in relation to framerate but as vsync tends to do bad things with the game and some things still break above 60fps it makes it a bit of a pain - ideally you want to cap it at a semi reasonable framerate that you can mostly sustain but without using vsync also that makes it a bit messy.

If you have a decent spec to play it on you also want to tun on bTreesReceiveShadows and bDrawLandShadows and increase the resolution of the shadow maps.

Looking to get back into Skyrim again for the addons but cant decide a race/class and path :( Fed up of most i need a fun one

Nord is good unless you went with them at the start of the game. Bretons are good otherwise - native magic resistance helps at the start of the game and you can mould them into many builds.

Fix bugs. You'll know 'em when you find them.

Well the bugs seem to be pretty well hidden because I don't recall ever seeing anything that needed a huge patch to fix.

Not a big fix, just lots of small ones. Take a look on the wiki for unofficial patches and known bugs. The major ones were fixed by Bethesda but theres still plenty of small ones they couldn't be bothered to put right.

Yeah I ran into quite a few small bugs, most fixeable using the console either to spawn missing items, flag a quest as complete and to ghost through or trigger doors that remained shut despite having completed the objectives/sequences to open them. I found out later quite a few happen due to playing the game with fps above 60 - If you vsync at 60 (yuck) a lot don't happen.

Installed 40 mods and started playing Skyrim for the 1st time! Thanks for the links in OP. I'm just wondering, now that I need to run skse_loader instead of the Skyrim launcher, what's the best way to run it through steam? Do I have to add it as a non-steam game or?

Most likely, though I don't use steam for Skyrim i'm afraid

You could just launch it from the Nexus Mod Manager so it boots through skse. Your stats and everything still get tracked on Steam so you still get achievements and everything if you launch through skse, if that's what you're worried about. The only thing you don't get is updated mod subscriptions on steam itself which you need to run the launcher first to update them. To be honest though you're better off staying away from the workshop altogether and modding through Nexus mod manager.

Does that mod work ok for you ?

It was weird on my system, rocks would look fine until I was right on top of them and then they would change shape.

No prob

Yes I'm using NMM, but I just want to launch the game via the Steam games list, as that's where all my games are even non steam games. The problem with adding it as a non-steam game is Skyrim will show up twice :P and my OCD kicks in! haha. I hope there is a way to maybe change where steam launches Skyrim from, i.e. the skse loader.
