The England Cricket Thread

Wouldn't recommend Hales to open vs the Aussies. He isn't great as an opener for Notts (totally a **** or bust kind of batsman). Taylor on the other hand should definitely be in the squad.

See KP is banging his own drum again on twitter

And why wouldn't he? He did everything he was told to do to be considered for the squad and they shafted him, now they're falling apart. He's playing very good cricket right now and he has every right to be saying the things he's saying because he's absolutely right. The best players should be in the team but the management continue on with the same old players over and over again. It amazes me that Bell is still in. He's a great player, of course he is, nobody doubts that, but right now he's in terrible form and he shouldn't be playing in the Ashes. Ballance is the same, fortunately they made the right decision there, but one change isn't enough to save the top order from falling apart at the next test.

Last chance for Belly at 3 though, sheesh

Well, it is his home ground. Tbh, he has served very well in the past, especially in Ashes, so I'm willing to give him another shot. (but only because it is his home ground mind!)

Wonder if Rashid will play?... I'd bing him in for Lyth and open with Ali. I know facing Starc and Johnson with the new ball is a completely different prospect than the bowlers he faces in County but he is cool as a cucumber, and this guy makes hundreds. He's a complete waste at 8 imo.

I think Bell will work it out. I don't know why, I just feel he can still make a difference. Gary Ballance though, rightfully dropped I think. His vulnerabilities were becoming too easily exploited. He has no footwork, it's like he's cemented at the crease. Sitting duck for all sorts of dismissals. Lyth doesn't particularly convincing as a solid opener, however it wouldn't have been sensible to make too many changes at once. Moeen is also going to get peppered in the next game after the way he got out at Lords. All this talk of moving Root up to bat at 3- why not move Moeen up to open with Cook instead of Lyth if he doesn't find form- he's a top order batsman at Worcestershire so he knows how to bat at the top. And then get Rashid in as the main spinner and bat at 7.

I hope Lyth responds to the selectors confidence in him. He certainly lost confidence in himself both with the bat and his catching in the field; he must have been in a dark place mentally?

I don't (always) think it's a good idea to continually pick and drop players but the main thing for me is to win the match even if it means bringing back previous players who are on form, even if it includes KP, Nick Compton even if it's for just one match. No doubt KP and Compton would accept a one-off call up?

It's getting spicy! About time really. All this mutual respect crap can wait until afterwards. This is the Ashes, for goodness' sake.

My prediction: England win at fortress Edgbaston. The Brummy Barmy Army are unsurpassed when it comes to showing true support to the team.

Mitchell J will start slinging mud pies again and Mitchell S will succumb to his vulnerable physique. Clarke can't score to save his life at the moment and 'Shermanator' will once again come back from the brink to save our British bacon.
