I think the argument is Bairstow will make mistakes but he'll get you runs, he was a helpful enabler to Root as well (121 partnership). We just can't keep Jonny behind the stumps next match. Foakes is excellent and has to come in. Whether we drop Bairstow or another batsman, perhaps Crawley (who got 61 and batted well, but in perfect conditions) or even Pope, is very much up for debate but Bairstow has cost us 3-5 wickets this match. That's huge.
It's hard to say what to do about a spinner at Lord's. I'd be tempted to go with five seamers, or an extra batsman. It's historically a pitch which helps seamers a bit particularly relatively early in the season, and none of our spinners are up to it really.
At Headingley, I'd be really tempted to bring in Rashid, even though he's only played white ball cricket for a long while now. He can take wickets, and it's his home ground.
Absolutely, and I think there's very much an argument for retaining him as a batsman. But at this stage his keeping is a downright negative. He needs to get in as an outright batsman or not at all.I think the argument is Bairstow will make mistakes but he'll get you runs, he was a helpful enabler to Root as well (121 partnership).
I thought he had made himself unavailable for test cricket indefinitely? You can't just 'bring him in' or we would have done it a long time ago.At Headingley, I'd be really tempted to bring in Rashid, even though he's only played white ball cricket for a long while now. "But he spoke to Brendon McCullum last year about the possibility of a return and was encouraged. “I’ve not closed the door on Test cricket. I’ve not retired, or anything like that,” he said. “It’s something that’s still there. It’s everyone’s dream to play Test cricket and I’m no different.”"I thought he had made himself unavailable for test cricket indefinitely? Yeah I can't say I disagree tbh, it's a tricky one.Absolutely, and I think there's very much an argument for retaining him as a batsman. But at this stage his keeping is a downright negative. He needs to get in as an outright batsman or not at all.
Incidentally, and semi-relatedly, does anyone feel like Buttler would thrive in Bazball?
Do you mean vs Foakes? Yeah, his batting is underrated. Although in a pressure situation / big innings I'd trust Bairstow over him.Yeah I can't say I disagree tbh, it's a tricky one.
Although I've just looked at the stats, test match average of 32 Vs 37 so the batting argument seems less of a reason really.
Sorry, yes, I meant Foakes.Do you mean vs Foakes? Yeah, his batting is underrated. Although in a pressure situation / big innings I'd trust Bairstow over him.
Let's have Stokes or Root have a danceAus knocking these off with ease
With our utterly benign bowling attack, I'm not at all surprised.Aus knocking these off with ease
Big score for him in EnglandHe did until you mentioned it.
