Meh, marginal call whichever way it goes. Can't complain about that. The more I see comments from McGrath though the more I am convinced he is either on the wind up or just a massive *******.

Have to say, I think it's probably out - the rules is that the stumps are broken when a bail is dislodged completely from the top of the stumps. Bairstow dislodged the off bail from the off stump, but it was still resting on middle when the ball entered his gloves. But it's 60/40, benefit of the doubt to the batsman, and I think the Aussies would understandably feel hard done by if it was given.

I think the only real question is whether he starts taking the stumps before he had the ball. Either way, marginal and you can't be too annoyed about it going either way.

My point was that I think he does, but he doesn't fully dislodge either of the bails before he has the ball so it doesn't matter. But agreed that it's marginal and right that the benefit of the doubt goes to Smith in that case. Just an interesting point on the rules really!

Edit: Also, I've not checked but given how close it was it wouldn't surprise me if, by the time he does have the ball and fully dislodge the bails, Smith is in anyway

I'm not entirely au fait with the rules on that. Surely if you take any amount of the bails before you have the ball you are gaining an advantage vs waiting until you have the ball. Lets say you get them 90% of the way off before you get the ball then you only have to move a tiny distance to finish the job vs how far you would have to by waiting.

I agree with you in principle, but the rules are pretty clear - if the stumps are broken before the ball arrives with the keeper then he needs to pull a stump out the ground. But they're only broken if a bail is completely dislodged at both ends.

What would have been interesting is it Bairstow had removed a bail before receiving the ball, then continued to break the stumps with ball in hand before Smith got in. I think that by the letter of the law Smith wouldn't be out unless Bairstow pulled a stump out the ground, but that would feel pretty unfair (albeit justified for his clumsiness!)

5 Live were saying that the comment from MCC was to agree it was out. @manic111

Honours even, but could so easily have been a lot more in Englands favour if the bowlers had continued to get through those wickets after Tea. But should be a good last 3 days as think there is some batting there and England should be looking to bat like they did in the last test, settle in and then look to take shots on, not go for it from the off.

And the MCC really covered itself in glorious impartiality earlier this series
