The England Cricket Thread

Amen, he was my favourite player and I watched most of the games he was involved in from the start of his career till the end.

I'll never forget his innings against South Africa when all the KP Genius Twitter account stuff came out, which was being influenced by several members inside the England team, Swann etc.

Anyway, this series has got me right back into English cricket. We could do with someone as exciting as Pietersen near the top of the order, and Harry Brook looks an ideal candidate, albeit not quite as explosive.

KP did for himself in the end to be fair, I can totally buy that he rubbed people up the wrong way. He's also a pretty dreadful commentator.

Brook is as talented but more restrained. Keep him at 5 though.

He was the highest run scorer in that series when he was dropped - permanently, well above any other English batter in Australia.

Not to mention he did this shortly after that series. https://www.facebook.com/SurreyCricket/videos/2015-kevin-pietersens-355/541601833089859/

England were dire for the year or two after he was dropped too. Anyway, don't get me started. He would have thrived under bazball. :D

I'm not doubting he was an amazing player, just that he's also a bit of a ****. I don't think it's particularly disputed that he's a **** is it?

Even if that player is destroying the team?
There was no evidence that was the case, at any period. Strauss has even said afterwards if he had his time again he would have handled things differently with regards to KP as an acknowledgement he got it wrong. And it was him (not Cook which he also admitted) that was the reason he was not back in the team. Seems like they buried the hatched though as KP was there for the Ruth Strauss foundation over the years. It's just a shame KP never got a send off IMO for the things he did for English cricket outside of the bad.

Fair enough, my understanding is that he was at least partly responsible for the splintering of the team. Although I think Swann was worse.

Either way, I'm glad we have the team we now, they all seem like really nice chaps.

Yes agree, team seems a lot more stable now. It came out afterwards from England outsiders, Carberry, Tremlett and others that KP was right in what he said about the England culture at the time.

Anyway as you say, under Stokes the team is thriving and so is the environment which is great to see. There is no longer the fear of failure if you get out playing an attacking shot, which overall seems a good thing for exciting English cricket.

Absolute gent.

Sky really must pay Ricky the big money to keep him around, he's been fantastic, his analysis and knowledge is just in a league of its own!

Listening to these guys tell stories from their careers when its raining can be as fascinating and enjoyable as the cricket. Ponting is great, such a shame Warne isn't still with us as he was great in the commentary box as well, had some great stories to tell.
