Sorry Rob, I appreciate the fact that you've posted in my defense but I did say the same to Platypus (first I have to admit) on the basis he seemed very annoyed with my first post.

I don't want to flood an interesting thread with pointless arguments so I would appreciate it if we can get back to the subject at hand. Mods please feel free to remove as you see fit.

No problem, i didn't see your later reply as i was still on the last page. It's just i get fed up of those on the left resorting to abuse if they don't agree with what the read.

You think I'm left wing? Oh well, perhaps you do need to start reading properly.

What could he have done? He couldn't have brought anything back which would have placated the anti-EU lot. Any deal would have received this response, imo, given how getting rid of free movement of people isn't doable.

I think he could have enjoyed his twilight years as PM without having come up with the stupid manifesto promise of a referendum to try and appease hard right wing conservative split voters :).

And the focus of the uk in europe over the next few years should have been to try and win reform of some prospects. Not a spit the dummy out style "give us what we wantplease give us some token gestures or we'll have a vote and might leave the club".

As a previous poster commented I would not be surprised if Dave was simply playing both sides.

On one hand he may way us to leave, personally and following the more vocal party members, on the other like Tony Blair he may be hoping for a EU job after his period of being PM.

Despite being a British Citizen and working for the EC I have no vote in this matter.

I've still to read how the UK would enforce migration quotas while still being a member of EFTA or are they going to have bilateral trade agreements with each EU member state?

Or are they giving up free trade completely in order to keep a few thousand builders from entering the UK?

In any case refusal to vote should be counted as a yes.

Switzerland have free trade (with passporting of financial services) but don't have to accept free movement.

EU countries are not allowed to form their own trade deals.

Switzerland did agree to free movement. It's rather whacky system meant that it then also passed laws restricting free movement and is currently being punished by the EU for failing to live up to the treaty it agreed to.

The EU would want a free trade agreement with the UK the same day we left, it's not just the UK who would lose out if that wasn't the case

Maggie said it best: 'Keep Britain in Europe!' 'Say Yes to Europe!'

:D

NOPE(again) well she may have said it. But she didn't want it.

"Lady Thatcher had reached the conclusion that Britain would be better off out in the 1990s following the ratification of the Maastricht Treaty in 1992."

They do her SSHHHHHHHH ;)

They voted to have quotas in a referendum, but have they renegotiated with the EU, yet? Cba googling when on my phone... care to link me up?

"Switzerland initially granted freedom of movement to EEA citizens in 2005-2011. It briefly reimposed restrictions in 2012-2013, but lifted them again in 2014. However, as a result of the popular initiative "Against mass immigration", Switzerland is scheduled to impose permanent quotas on residence/work permits for citizens of all EEA countries except Liechtenstein, starting from 2017 at the latest. [25][26][27]"

I'm doubtful they would agree to the same deal for us.

Any sauce for that? All I can see is language around being disappointed.
