The F1 2014 season

so he isnt a motorsport guy, thank you for the confirmation

He may be a good engineer but makes no difference.

Glad to hear Lotus were a one man band...lol

Not a motorsport guy because he holds an aeronautics degree, guess that means Newey isn't either as he also has an aeronautics degree. I know they hold different roles in the team but to lable someone not a 'motorsport guy' based on a degree is rubbish.

Not sure I agree with Boullier taking the position but it is good to see that McLaren are changing personal with the aim to improve themselves.

It's been done mate!

That is just genius :D

Wasn't that spirit f1 test mule purely for testing the Honda engine in racing conditions, but yes there are other examples.

I will watch and enjoy f1 this year, but it is absolutely laughable.
Double points stupid cars, cost saving but spending more, commercial rights owner in criminal charges.

The pinnacle of motorsport huh

What a strange analogy.

Have they? There was me thinking that money was more important than skill and proven career path in F1. Anything that potentially puts distance between those who have bought their seat and those who are there on merit is a good thing IMO.

Money is only more important than skill when the driver meets the minimum skill level required (which is set very high - even Loeb couldn't get a Super Licence), and when the difference in skill between the paying and non-paying driver isn't large. No team would have Sutil over Vettel, but they might have have him over Di Resta who is at a similar level.

There's a lot of talk about pay drivers, much of which is nonsense. There have always been pay drivers in F1, or drivers who've brought a lot of sponsorship. The difference between the drivers in terms of skill isn't massive (relatively speaking), the difference in experience is.

What's more concerning that there doesn't seem to be a decent route into F1, and that those entering the sport aren't given the opportunity to gain much experience due the costs associated with testing.

Bottom line is, reduce the costs or have a sensible cost limit and you'll see less pay drivers or drivers requiring sponsorship.

Nonsense. He was chief engineer with the Spanish Racing Engineering team, in charge of its World Series by Nissan programme, and was an engineer with the French A1 team. After that he was manager of a number of young drivers.

Sounds like a motorsport man through and through to me.

Apparently Nico has been down at Silverstone today doing a few laps (40KM or 100KM is getting reported) in the new car.

Merc have also posted a flyby -

What's the deal with testing, are teams allowed to test outside the official allocation? (just curious to know how Merc managed to test at Silverstone today).

100km for shakedown and filming, on GP2 tyres.

I'm not convinced by that Merc drive by. I will have to hold onto my memory of screaming V8s through the trees :(

There was a speed hillclimb car that ran an Arrows V10. Hearing that scream up a little road by a farmers field, rather surreal :).

I just can't see the V6s making my spine tingle like the NAs. But the move to turbo was inevitable so I will learn to love it.

That merc sounds nice. I am probably one of only a few people that will prefer the new deeper, less whiny noise of the new engines. Throw in the turbo noises and that just makes it even better :)
