The Fashion Thread... personal tastes, musings, and recommendations

Those Merino TKMAXX jumpers bobble like a mother****** no matter what machine wash you do them on. Hand only.

I got one from Asos ages ago and the only thing I do with it after washing (usually at 30) is give it a bit of a stretch while it's damp before leaving it to dry and then another pull while it's drying. Stays perfect. :)

Got this duffle coat from H&M when there was all those online discount codes going a few months a go and I've worn it probably 5 days out of 7 a week it's that nice. If their site was actually working right now I would link to it.

The Asos ones are the same as the TKMAXX ones? Hmmm I machine washed mine on 30 delicate slow spin and they've bobbled and pilled badly.

I got this a few months ago in the French Connection sale for winter, it's the warmest coat evaaaaaar:

End up cooking if the sun comes out though lol, need something a little thinner for a few months time.

Nudie make the best jeans I have found. Best quality denim and made by hand in Italy. Can't beat them.

I tried Nudie once, regretted it since. I have a thing for selvage denim, but I've been an Edwin Nashville fan for the last 10 years. Can't stand the revolting new distressed stuff Edwin have come out with recently, but a good pair of Nashvilles are just amazing. Story is that they're a direct rip off of the original Levi 501 pattern from ~1900, although thats likely a crock.

Anyway, I found the Nudie's too quick to relax (and just relax into shapelessness) and just not age in the way Edwins do, there's a definite difference in the quality of the denim.

Uniqlo's selvage jeans aren't actually bad either. Sure, they lack the heavy duty Edwin denim, but cut wise and how they age is pretty bang on. A bargain at ~£30 a pair as well.

Put them on a wool wash?

Chuck all my washing in a wash basket and always forget!

Hand wash them all now though.

Anyone got any stuff from American Eagle before? Tempted to order some polos, normally a large but don't want them to be too baggy.

Odd. Maybe they don't do selvage anymore - the one's I have are http://shop.uniqlo.com/uk/goods/067318, but they're out of stock, so not linked into main site. If you do see them around, definitely worth a look if you're into denim.

Still not quite as great as a new pair of starched up Edwin's or other good raw denim - but they are like a 1/3 of the price! I still have pairs of Nashville's from 9 years ago that are entirely wearable - and moulded to me.

Can you tell me a bit more about Raw denim? What are the advantages? I don't really know much about it, other than seeing that it is pretty expensive...

Raw denim is denim that hasn't been washed after dying, so the dye wears off and leaves a much better looking 'fade'. It needn't be that expensive, Uniqlo do some for £30-50, as do ASOS.

It's usually a heavier, higher quality denim as well although not always.

More or less this - raw denim is untreated, often untouched by water at all denim. That'll mean that the first time you wash the jeans, it'll bleed a load of dye (ie wash 'em alone the first few times!).

The trick with raw denim, and bear with me here... You don't wash them for at least 6 months (and as little as possible after that - once a year is good if you can air them!). Wear them in, so creases form around your 'natural' position, and the dye rubs off naturally on the creases. You end up with a better looking pair of jeans that just look more fitted to you personally - without any of that faux distressed look. You do need to make sure the jeans actually fit you - no skater style would work!

Raw denim is technically different to selvage - although you'll often get raw selvage. Selvage is denim cut from the very edge of the loom (you'll get the red thread on the seam to prove it), where the weave is tighter and closer. It's naturally higher quality and harder wearing from this alone.

The reason it's generally more expensive isn't that it's only a fashion thing - but that it's also more wasteful making jeans just from this premium section of the woven denim - there's just less of it and more waste if a label is only making selvage. Plus, good selvage is made from a higher quality denim (eg the Nashvilles 14oz) in the first place, and the cutting from the edge only improves on that as far as wear and tear goes.

It can turn into a habit - I generally get a new pair of Edwins or occasionally something else (see the bad Nudie experience!) every 6-9 months and wear the new ones in among my much older pairs.

I don't think I'd be happy washing my jeans just once or twice a year, they would pong?!

Depends what you do in them!

Seriously though. barring accidents with oil or stupid stuff, you can get away with not washing 'em, as long as you can hang them up to air and not leave them folded up with other clothes.

The other to look out for if you're looking at selvage is sanforized vs non sanforized. Sanforized denim has been treated to not shrink, or at least, not much (maybe 0.5cm at the most). Non sanforized will shrink a good 1/2 inch+ on the waist and 1-2 inches on the leg on the first wash - although will stretch back out a bit with more wear of course.

This talk of denim is making me think of looking around at non Edwin brands again - http://www.ironheart.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=948.0 look like worth trying. And yeah, that is a 71 page forum thread about a pair of jeans...

I wear jeans to go out in though, they can get a bit stinky after a night on the pop :D

How the hell are we going to know the answer to that? Furthermore, please don't post your fashion "tips", they're likely to make me cry.

You weren't, it was a rhetorical question.

Fashion with PermaBanned, tip one: if you have embarrassing clothes that are reasonable comfortable, wear them when lounging around the house rather than throwing them away.

:p
