The Fashion Thread... personal tastes, musings, and recommendations

no, jeans must be either really thin if you are some kind of indie kid hipster, really baggy if you are a gangster/mosher or straight and slightly thin if you are normal.

those are just awful. ie slightly baggy, bootcut and stonewash. Back to 2002 for you.

Hold your pantalon a second, are you saying that your style of fashion is the correct view?

OK Gok Wan!

I've been wearing shoes with jeans a lot more often recently. I have a few pairs of smart jeans and a pair of black shoes are comfortable to walk in and I feel much smarter and well-dressed.

I also like shirts, I don't really wear polos and t-shirts are generally reserved for wearing at home because I can just chuck them on. Boring grey t-shirts but they keep me warm and I'm not really bothered how I look at home.

Any recommendations for quality casual shirts? At the moment I just have a few from Burton, Next etc, I don't really know much about designer brands...

TBH the OP sounds like Carlton Banks... :p

But on a serious note I know what you are aiming at and have a couple of friends that wear this sort of thing, however it's just not me.

Jumpers: Spawn of the devil, in fact most things with sleeves are. Closest I get is a NF TKA 100 black/grey fleece that I wear with the sleeves rolled up if it's colder or otherwise sleeveless rugby shirts (mostly an All Blacks one due to it being very plain) because they are warm yet nice and mobile (not cotton ones but nylon/proper rugby shirts).

Shirts: I agree with Next, an excellent array of Shirts and usually where i get mine from due to a nice selection of slim fitting ones. Shirts should not be white (with the very rare exception) because it looks like you're a schoolboy and plain ones should be avoided, nice smart/colourfulish striped are good in my book. My favourite colours are purple/red/blue/mixed at the moment, faded/pale/pastel colours always looks like they are for 60 somethings.

Suit: M&S, although I only have one at the moment.

Trousers: I wear Jeans almost exclusively, normally from Next, sometimes from Topman and very occasionally from River Island, just plain, slightly faded ones, slightly on the baggy side normally (I'm a snug 32" waist so normally go for 34" jeans because they are less restrictive).

T-Shirts: Normally an Outdoor/sporty brand so my wardrobe is full of Animal/Fox etc. tees. Anything with big plain labels stuck on the front are out and I steer clear of the surf brands too (Yeah I know Animal could fall into a surf brand and it has a big brand label plastered all over the front of their tees but they are less surf, more outdoors/extreme sports and the labels are always well disguised as pieces of "art" rather than just a massive "BENCH"). Plain Tees are rather boring tbh and anything with a small brand label on is definately avoided.

Shoes: A pair of black slip on smart leather shoes for formal occasions and a pair of Salomon trainers for general every day wear, comfy, reasonably smart and ready for all occasions.

Jacket: Mountain Hardware softshell in an understated colour (black/dark greys). Alternatives would be the standard North Face softshell which is slightly cleaper and pretty good (warm as well if you get the thicker summit series), these do seem to be a bit common for my liking though. Still nice. If you have some money to blow then Peak Performance and arcteryx do some very nice softshells too.

Thing is I know I do look a bit scruffy a lot of the time but I am comfortable. I do think I could do with being a bit smarter on a lot of occasions (such as going out on a night out, I have very little between the casual and very smart) but most of the fashion in that sort of area looks terrible and TBH I'm very picky on what sort of clothing I like, normally only buying a couple of Jeans, a shirt and 3-4 tees a year because I am so particular.

My other wardrobe on the other hand contains much more variety...

Rab/North Face fleeces
Helly Hansen base layers
Schoffel Jacket (alongside another goretex)
NF Trousers
A variety of shoes and boots
Various pairs of gloves and socks...:p

These are the shoes I want to get, pity they are so expensive, going to have to wait until my birthday in March to get my hands on them :(

Superdry etc etc are not "chav brands" per se, they are highly popular imported fashion brands that speak to the youth of a better look, a better life, and something they can aspire to.

Isn't Superdry just some bloke from Cheltenham making American/Japanese style T-shirts that idiots pay lots of money for, rather than being a popular imported brand. Certainly not something that offer the youth of today a better life and something they can aspire to.

Correct. Although he's a sound bloke actually. Ploughs all the profit into growing his business instead of taking fat profits for himself.
It might only be a passing fashion trend but he's firing on both barrels at the moment.

Just picked up two refectory merino wool jumpers for the pricely sum of £17 each, they are very nice indeed.

I also agree with whoever mentioned BASE for shoes, they are the only brand that I've found that don't fall to shreds within a few months.

Slim jeans, graphic t shirts (allsaints style prints, lots of little indie retailers online that sell wonderful shirts rather than the total trash sold by topman and the like), cardigans, vintageish boots, big smart wool coat.

But I'm 19. So shh

Are you an ogre?!

I usually only buy casual shoes from Burton/River Island or somewhere like that or if there are a pair of brand name ones at a decent price at TK Maxx like the smart Kickers ones I have now for work which were £25. I got them probably 20 months ago now and they still look like new when given a buff with the shoe polish.

I walk normally too, not like a JCB trying to dig up tarmac!

Ooooh, good shout there.

My Firetrap casual shoes have managed to destroy themselves in under 6 months, and BASE have a fair few things that I like at decent prices.
I think it's time for a trip to Schuh/Debenhams to try a few on and then buy them online :)

I'm leaning towards Crank though

Need to go check out some leather jackets as well tomorrow

Very fine quality aren't they. I wish I could find a website or place that sells their stuff, but Googles so far have been fruitless... i've no idea where they sell their stuff normally. It's surprising given quality is as good as any major mainstream label.

Shoes:

Loakes / Barkers / Church's

in order of ascending awesomeness.

And then shirts:

CT or Hawes & Curtis / Harvie and Hudson / Pink

and of course you have made to measure and then bespoke, but these two option only usually work for formal, casual shirts get ready made as they will be more varied.

I think chinos/jeans with either casual shirt & jumper or a polo shirt is a good combination for weekends.

Shamelessly stolen from CT:

Love how the OP claims that it's just his opinion on what he thinks looks good, pretends to be indifferent and tolerant of other fashions... and then calls skinny jeans "emo lose".

Way to judge. How would you react if I did it to you?

"Blazers are preppy lose"

Have fun.

Oh yes, because of course I can't have a jokingly embellished opinion on anything can I? Loosen up with the nerd-rage, it ain't healthy. :D

Feel free to call blazers preppy lose or criticise any of my choices all you want, all I care about is that im comfortable wearing them, I don't care a jot about anything else. :)

Good for you, I'm 24 and mostly wear that stuff. And guess what? It looks good...

OP thanks for this thread, couldn't get anything from TK Maxx but did pick up a couple of merino wool jumpers from House of Frazer.
