The Fury(X) Fiji Owners Thread

Yup there you have it really AMD / Nvdia are no different. I cannot see a single argument to prefer either company over the other. They both don't deal with customer terribly well. They both have dodgy drivers from time to time.

You really just have to buy based on hardware, the Fury X looks great but pump whine has ruined the early cards. The 980 Ti is a great solid card from Nvidia.

Hopefully this Fury X issue is now fixed in production and future cards will be whine free.

Jesus Boom, why did you have to go and be all rational and s*** :D

But seriously,this 100%.

So I'm waiting for Boomstick to put in another Nvidia Air card in his newly quietened machine that he actually made quieter because he couldn't hear the Fury X.....

Btw nice that early buyers with dodgy pump noise get no sympathy, cheers guys :D:p

Is a hassle having to send this back, lose money in postage.. Oh well lol. Joys of being an early adopter :)

Yeah my PC is really quiet now, something I've been working towards. Passive PSU, fan controller on quiet 120mm's to keep things really whisper quiet.

So yeah once I had done that, the constant whine from the pump became an issue. Had I not done I would have probably not noticed but later re sale of card would be effected no one would want a rev 1 Fury X. So is a PITY.

Not buying any cards for a while. I've tried all the big guns, happy to sit it out for a while and see where pricing ends up.

Air cooled Fury is out in 2 weeks? Might shake things up a bit (Hopefully) Let's see what happens. I'm in no rush to get something else. Hopefully things like G1 980 Ti SOC will get a price reduction over next few weeks / months..

I contemplated a 980ti you know it seems like a great deal.
still it is old tech, it dosnt offer me anything new vs a Fury.
It run games so does Fury, it isnt flexible in eyefinity.
It is run by a ceo who can walk on stage and lie to the whole world that a card exist when it does not. Might not be a good reason but then the 970 ram issue and I thought did they do that with intent?

I want to wake up go play my games feeling proud of my hardware.
AMD offers me that with the Fury.

AMDMatt needs to slip up regarding the 14 July.:D
its needed so needed.

980Ti isn't really old tech, well not any more than the Fury X. Sure the Fury has HBM, but that doesn't seem to have made much of a difference at the minute. Similarly the 980Ti has HDMI 2.0, which is newer than the HDMI tech on the Fury. Swings and roundabouts. Fury X doesn't offer much a 980Ti doesn't, for now at least. DX12/Vulkan performance is all speculation.

The one thing I will say is that Nvidia do seem to put a lot of effort into improving the experience of the gamer. Well the Nvidia gamer at least. They're not great at giving away all the money, time and effort they invested into their stuff, but they'll do it for themselves and their customers.

AMD do give things away for free, but also seem to like handing stuff off for others to do on their behalf. Make Mantle into a cross-vendor cross-platform API, or let Khronos do all that...
Come up with Freesync and adaptive sync and let VESA take care of that...
3D support, don't even bother with that just let someone else do it. I don't have any interest in AMD's VR offering because of this. (I'm not that interested in VR full stop)

I'm very tempted by the Fury X though and have pre-ordered 2. Although that's be cause I thought the price was supposed to be going up after the end of June. I might cancel the pre-order and see how the pump noise thing plays out.

You getting a replacement?

No mate, refund. They said they won't have stocks for weeks. Best option was to send back for refund under 14 day thing.

In no rush to buy something else, tried all the big guns. Using a backup GTX 960 now. This will do until the Fury X issue is fixed and or 980 Ti G1 gets a price reduction. Whichever comes first I guess lol.

The re stock of Fury X is 4 weeks + away, and there is no guarantee that they will have fixed pump. With no clarification on it from AMD or Retailers, I would advice caution when ordering Fury X. I.e you have no way of knowing where it's an old or new pump design.

AMD may clarify things at some point. One would hope so.

It does a great job if you want 30 fps 1080P only but for gameplay, it isn't the best (hence me asking about GVR). I will be switching to that tomorrow and then ShadowPlay on Nvidia, as the quality is 10x better for both.

Edit:

Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhh just seen what was wrong and the capture card had defaulted to 12mbs instead of the 30 I used for AMD. Schoolboy error lol

If you're looking for a grate capture software that works on both NV and AMD try Mirillis Action! Great quality, awesome performance.

No mate and can you tell me why I have issues with Mantle please? I installed the drivers (15.15) and didn't know if I had to do something else?

Anandtech have just reviewed the FuryX and explain why. It's because FuryX and Tonga(r9 285) are based on GCN 1.2 and since AMD effectively deprecated Mantle, as it is now essentially Vulkan, before Tonga came out; the Mantle driver hasn't been optimised at all for GCN 1.2. See: http://www.anandtech.com/show/9390/the-amd-radeon-r9-fury-x-review/12

Also, I replied to your youtube video with a link, also from anandtech, where AMD said that the games have to be patched to work properly with GCN 1.2, it seems Dice haven't done this with BF4 despite it being the poster child for lower-level APIs.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/8460/amd-radeon-r9-285-review/6

Anandtech did say that Civilisation Beyond Earth works well with Mantle and FuryX, however.

So it's a combination of changing focus to dx12 and vulkan in the drivers and games needing to be patched, particularly those released before Tonga (BF4 and thief). So these games will work with Mantle, but it's pot luck whether they work as you would expect.

Boom> Like you, I never realized how noisy my PC was till I put in quite fan's and had a whisper quiet Gigabyte 460 1GB years ago. Changed my perspective of things. I hate noisy PC's myself nowadays, so completely understand where you are at! :-)

That makes sense and truthfully, performance at 1080P and 1440P is quite down on what I was expecting. I will give those links a look when I am finished work tonight thanks.

Ha, yeah the fan controller, all new system fans, plus passive PSU have really dropped noise. It's really nice. Shame about the hassle with Fury X but in the long run.. I would have only sold it on at a loss in a few months away lol.

Haha :)

Well technically the G1 has had a price reduction, it was £649.99 now it is £629.99. Also atm it is in the weekly sale at £619.99.

I'm in the exact same place.

Tempted to go for x2 980ti hybrids, want to go for a very quiet build for my next one.

Going to go for lower noise in my next build also I think. Went for a Kraken X60 which in silent mode is not exactly silent. Lol

Though to be honest when I game, I cannot hear my PC over my speakers or headphones if I use those, so no rush :)

Ah that's cool. Yeah I'm in rush to go out and get anything else now.

Once my refund etc has def gone through and dealt with. I'll start looking again.

There is rumours that AMD are going to start bundling games with Fiji cards, so over the next few weeks / months as long as pump issue is fixed Fury X might be a good deal at that point. Apart from the pump noise issue the Fury X is a great card. Everything else was great, especially temps.

Will just see what happens now.

I posted a link earlier about the pump whine issue, not sure if you noticed it.

One of the other efficiency's the FuryX has is the AIO which keeps the chip much cooler resulting in lower electron leakage. If the FuryX was to run hotter this power consumption would increase quite a lot. That is unimportant for the FuryX but for the air cooled Fury it will ether have to be cut down quite a lot or it will be very power hungry and need a very beefy cooler.

Some people are holding out for the plain Fury but I expect hey will be disappointed. The FuryX is definitely the card to get form AMD.[/url]

It's actually quite possible that the air cooled Fury might use the lower leakage/better quality dies, assuming Fury yields are very high (big assumption but humour me) it would make more sense to use the hotter running, leakier cores on the Fury X with its overkill 500W AIO watercooler and save the cooler operating ones for the air cooled varieties... of course, the review samples will be the best of the bunch. ;)
