The way that GW2 will work is that you have in essence 2 sets of armour, one will be used for stats, and the other will be used for looks, and its these 2 sets combined that will give you, your overall stats and appearence.. I believe this is the same with weapons as well. So although the armour you will acquire will probably have poor stats, the look will be unique, and the stats will be upgradable.
What we do know is that the rewards items on the calculator will not be available anywhere else in GW2. So if you want Ruriks sword you need to unlock it, as it will not drop in GW2, and the same goes for any other item on that reward list.
