Currently having a blast with DPAD to consolidate my 5th place (worldwide) but was folding for another team. I started DC with SETI for alt.comp.hardware.overclocking (Usenet) then moved onto Genome@Home (which predates Folding@Home but is the same people) for ACHO which became TGC when it merged with two other teams, then Distributed Folding for TGC, then FAH now DPAD but will go back to FAH sooner or later.

DC is an addiction and I have it in spades!
wow that's some good DC heritage - and that's quite some folding score you have there! :)
ahh the good old days of G@H eh? :) I came in after the F@H and G@H were combined to use the same client - back in the days when WUs were real WUs :p

I must point out one thing - the fun in any DC project is the comradeship and competition, the fact that folding is achieving results and isn't run for profit just makes it all the more worthwhile

-Your pc is poorly designed; sort out noise or cooling problems by posting in the Overclocking & Cooling forum. Folding can be run at a low CPU percentage if necessary which will lower heat and power consumption.
I've tried, but there's nothing I can do about it :(
It runs at 45ºC at stock frequencies, idle, even though I have 2 80mm intakes, 2 80mm exhausts and a 92mm CPU fan with a huge Thermalright Copper heatsink and a tidy case.

That's just plain rubbish. My PC uses too much power by being on when I'm not using it, it's nothing to do with the thermal performance of it. When I don't want to use it, why should I bother leaving it on, wasting electricity that I don't want to pay for?
Folding runs while you are using it, and most of the time you are using it you are not using 100% cpu time, so folding will use the cpu time that you are not using, which unless your playing a game will be most of it.
It will only use the small amount of extra electricity required to run at 100% cpu utilisation all the time rather than about 10% of the time.
I suggested this be put in GH
As i said, i'm not putting spam in a serious hardware forum, a gh thead must be made for the gh, such as a folding competition or a benchmarking thread or something. This thread in gh would be spam.
Are you lot in DC really that hard up for people, its like 3 DC pimps per week now.
We have an ambition to become the best team in the world, and we are representing you and this forum.

Please don't forget that this is primarily a medical reaserch project helping to cure illnesses. That alone should be reason enough to spend 5 minutes setting it up, if the competative side doesn't appeal to you.

Thanks to everyone who has voted, and welcome to the team to everyone who has joined in. Keep the comments coming...

Is it really 'spam' considering its a research project?

In a hardware forum yes, in the general discussion, no.
How can i track my own stats and see myself in the OcUK team?
Welcome to the team.
Its all in my first post, section 3 part 2 near the bottom.
You won't appear untill sometime after you finish your first wu.
Download fahmon to see what its doing.
The team users list here is probably what you want.

Folding will let you set cpu ultilisation, so if you want to you can set it to use 50% so it doesn't get too hot or loud or whatever.

I was using predictor that doesn't seem to have that featrue. The above link works fine.

I used to run cow on my network (two servers 24/7 and three workstations when powered up). They made my electricity bill larger than necessary however ;) Plus, my PC is having difficulty just idling in this hot weather so I don't think it would be too happy running at 100% all day :)

Actually have no idea what this is

Folding@home is a distributed computing project designed to perform computationally intensive simulations of protein folding. The project’s goal is to add greater understanding to protein folding, misfolding, aggregation, and related diseases. Such diseases include BSE (mad cow), Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, among others.

Folding@home does not rely on powerful supercomputers for its processing; instead, the primary contributors to the Folding@home project are many thousands of personal computer users who have installed a small client program. The client runs in the background, and makes use of the CPU when it is not busy. In most modern personal computers, the CPU is rarely used to its full capacity at all times; the Folding@home client takes advantage of this unused processing power.

The Folding@home client periodically connects to a server to retrieve “work units.” These are packets of data upon which to perform calculations. Each completed work unit is then sent back to the server.

Sitting here reading/posting at 00:42 in the morning simply because, I'm another DC addict.

Will be shopping for a new 3800 X2 AM2 rig just for team 10 soon :D

On with the stompfest :p

Sitting here sweating like a peodophile in a playground at 00:48 because i'm a Dc addict ;)

Will be shopping for an Athlon mp rig for team 10 soon

Why do my folding gd threads always coincide with extremely hot weather...?
