doing anything extra on the computer uses more power. this in turn costs money, you know what they say.... every little helps. and I don't want to _add_ to the electricity bill. oh, and i don't care what you think... that's my choice, so live with it. stop preaching you're folding ways, you guys are nearly as bad as organised religion!

;)

I have noticed a couple of people saying they don't want/can't run their PC all the time, even though it has already been explained, I shall mention it again:

You do NOT need to run Folding@Home 24/7. If you only use your PC for 8 hours a day, then fine - F@H will still work.

The F@H client has been designed to run using idle cpu cycles which everyone has in large quantities. It was not meant to take over your PC and force you to run it for 24 hours a day for the rest of time. The F@H client will also immediately give up CPU cycles in favour of any other software.

I still don't fully understand it. I read the sticky so I know what its about but what do we or ocuk get from taking part?

Apart from aiding medical research you can take part simply for the competition. For each WU [work unit] you complete you get a certain number of points. The more WUs you get through, the more points. The faster your PC is, the more WUs you get through, and again more points.

I suppose it is willy-waving in a way, but what's the harm in some friendly competition that at the end of the day may save lives.

The man said he didnt want to, his choice :)
Personally, my PC is ridiculously hot.. 60C idle, and up to 85C when running HL2 and the like. It's like a bloody oven in my room atm :(

I know how you feel, my 4400+ is OCd and in this weather bakes the hell out of my room. During the day isn't too bad because I have a desk fan and there is usually a breeze. However, at night it gets very hot in my room. I can't run the fan either as it is a little loud. I have had to switch my rig off at night now.

However, any time you can spare is time used wisely. You could also buy a new PC. Do it for Team OcUK, you know you want to :D

I voted can't be bothered, but it's also because my computer gets hot.

I mostly use my parents' computer during the summer, as the room it's in stays pretty cool, whereas my bedroom is almost saunalike due to having the sun on it all day :(

This whole thread sounds very "go out of your way to help push Team OcUK up a leaderboard or you're a baby killer" to me :/

I fold on my work PC as I have an intermittant connection at home.

Ditto - get work to pay for the power :D (but ask your boss first!!!!)

On the electrical bill issue - difference between pc on and surfing / wordprocessing / (idle to 15% usage) and 100% is is less than 100w for a 3.0
P4. Everything else is less power hungry.

.1kw x 24 hours x 7 days =16.8Kwh @ 14p a unit (average) = £2.35 per week
This is worst case only additics do this (and I'm one of them :D )

Typical folder .1kw x 5 hours x 6 days = 3Kwh @ 14p = 42p per week

Typical hot weather folder running at 50% = 7p per week !

If your using an amd take a third of above figures (7 x .66% = 4.6p)
If Overclocked add half (7 x 1.50% - 10.5p)
If Overclocked AMD do both (7 x .66% x 1.50% = 6.9p)

Yes your machine will be hotter that when you are surfing etc, but cooler that when your are gaming (that second heat source your Graphic card is
not required for folding aka lower temp)

If you don't want to fold - don't it's not a problem, all we are saying is many people's reasons for not folding is not based on facts.

-Your pc is poorly designed; sort out noise or cooling problems by posting in the Overclocking & Cooling forum. Folding can be run at a low CPU percentage if necessary which will lower heat and power consumption.

The CPU puts out heat, doesn't matter how good the cooling is that heat doesn't just vanish, it comes out the back and contributes to an already boiling south facing bedroom :p

Celeron D folding here non stop for ages now. It hasnt been turned off for more then 20 seconds in about 3 or 4 months and had no problems what so ever :D

If a Celeron D can fold so can you!!!!
