The GTX 980 Ti owners thread.

Honestly think the 1080 is quite a downgrade from 980Tis in SLI, especially for your resolution which is not too far off of 4k. Even stock 980Tis in SLI are beastly, but as we all know scaling depends on the software. About 1 DX12 game supports SLI right now which is ridiculous. It's worth noting even one 980Ti at 1430MHz is not far off a stock 1080. If you check the Gamers Nexus review of the Hybrid 1080 mod with a 2100MHz OC it showed very little actual fps increase over their max oc with the reference cooler. Pascal currently shows poor performance scaling with OCing.

I would not think you will see any large benefit between selling two 980TIs or one 1080. Firstly, the 1080 is overpriced for it's place in the full Pascal hierarchy, which NVIDIA will slowly reveal for maximum profit. Secondly the 1080 will truly be knocked off of it's perch when the 1080Ti comes out. The Titan X came out 6 months after the 980, with the cut down Ti a few months after. At the end of the day though if you fancy something new and shiny in one simple package then it's up to you.

Yeah, I'm under no illusions that it's simply a downgrade when it comes to games which scale even half decently with SLI. In crucial games though such as Witcher 3 there's a 15-20 FPS boost with the 1080 against the 980 Ti at around my resolution. That's all I'm really looking for. For substantially less heat, noise, and tinkering, I'd definitely be happier with a single 1080 even with a 10-20 FPS decrease in a number of games compared to 980 Ti SLI.

If I had two hybrid/watercooled 980 Tis, I would have stuck with them though. I really value low noise/heat more so than I thought. That's one of the most appealing aspects of the 1080 for me.

If it's of any interest EVGA appear to be clearing stock of the Hybrid upgrade kits - in the US unfortunately. Currently 50% off but limited to 2 per household. May be just over stock or maybe a sign of a new version for the 1080 but if you have a contact in the US it may be worth a look.

I've ordered one via my sis (I couldn't order direct off the site with my UK details to her address so look on Ebay.com) so I have a spare and maybe just to have one around to tinker with. I did watch the Gamers Nexus vids with interest.

Bought a 1440p, 144hz G Sync XB270HU yesterday. Loving every second so far. Bye bye 4K! Not TOO missed.

So many games to see what how much FPS I can get now I'm not stuck at 60.

It is an awesome monitor!! Enjoy, I know I have since I got it last October, one of the best upgrades I ever made. Silky smooth gsync with 1440 :) Although it made me upgrade my 970 to a 980ti but it was worth it...Witcher 3 looks stunning!

4k is damn epic but takes SO much graphical power, esp on a game like The Division :(

Agree, can't wait till they make 4K versions of the ultra-wides and larger than 34" so to take advantage of the extra resolution. That will be epic.:D

But we have to pray Nvidia is not going to be selling a single card that will cost £1000+ just to run sensible frame rates on them.

Will wait and see then, like I said in another post before, only reason I'm still gaming on a desktop these days (coming from a person that has always had a desktop) is the 21:9 screens, if they didn't come out I think I would have stayed on the 16:10 1920x1200 and then sold up the desktop and got another high end laptop and called it quits on desktops and only run a server in the house for all the mobile devices.

Hoping Nvidia doesn't kill the desktop gaming market with their silly ways. AMD are no better too but Nvidia is really trying hard it seems, well they don't believe that is the case of course but as a consumer since I was a young teenager of high end computer equipment, they are making it very hard to justify the minor speed bumps we are getting for a massive increase in price.

I think I'm just going to change my buying habits for desktop parts and keep parts as long as possible and update either second hand parts or extend the time between updates to justify the outlay. They won't be getting updates from me every year to two years anymore on the graphics side. CPUs now last a good 4-5 years before you see a decent upgrade. May do the same with graphics cards now and treat them like CPUs.

I'm not jumping on this overpriced 1080 band wagon so I've sold my titan x for a decent price and have just picked up an msi 980ti for 375 on the bay and going to order a second from there for around the same price.

My question is will any of the ekwb blocks fit the msi cards? The ones on Ocuk say for gigabyte, for evga etc, are the mounting holes in different places?

Lol - you're not jumping on the 1080 overpriced bandwagon but you had a Titan X????

At least you're learning from past experience :p

Touche. I was prepared to go for the 1080 but I think nvidia are seriously milking the pricing. It's like they're offering a slice of what they have for a mammoth cost, the titan x was an impulse buy and was a lush card but the 980ti is what I should have waited for. Looking forward to having a pair.

Do you know the answer to my original question?

Here is my post from a while back in this thread. Download EVGA Precision X (need to register to download but it is free and works with non EVGA cards).

Make sure fan is set to auto top left then click fan curve. You can drag the points up and down like I did or drag a new part of the curve to make extra points. Then hit apply bottom right and right click one of the profiles 1-9 to save it. Left clicking a profile selects it. Then make sure the open with OS is enabled lower left.

Mine is set up for silence and to keep fan under 65% which I find too noisy. You can also set a temp target (unlock the power and temp scales to the left of the 2 bars then toggle.to prioritise temp) and the card will throttle at that temp to keep fan and heat down.

thanks for that ill give it a try as my pc gaming days are done due to a xbox and lack of funds every 6 months lol , but my lad has decided to go over to pc gaming and had a bit of cash so purchased the parts and we built him a pc with i5 skylake 16gb ram and ssd and a gigabyte g1 980ti

im probably being a bit anal with the fan curve as the fans never go above 60 per cent and the temp has not yet gone above 74 after 5 or so hours of ark evolved and some other games at max at 1080p

im just thinking theres 40 per cent more fan to use so temps could be lower although i know those temps are supposed to be pretty much on the nose with that card lol

Honestly after 60% it gets VERY loud and doesn't help the overclock much. In fact mine is now back at stock speeds since I get rare crashes in Counter Strike despite being stable on all other games (100+ hours of Witcher 3) and the fan never gets above 60% with that profile.

Easy way to test the noise: set up a custom fan curve with 30-50c flat at different percentages in Windows (e.g. 50%, then 60% then 70%...), hit apply and listen. Then remember to go back to a sane curve afterwards!

how do i set that temp target i cant find the unlock power and temp scales ?

sounds like that would be better as the lad dont mind a bit of noise so if i could set the gpu not to go above say 70c that would be ideal

Click the coupling image (red) to left of temp and power sliders. Then drag power to 110% and temp to 80c and the toggle the switch to the right (orange) down to point at temp.

With that fan curve up to 80c it will stay below 60% fan, at really low temps (i.e. Desktop and internet /videos) it will be pretty silent, then once in ganes it hits 80c it will stop boosting the card (the 980Ti overclocks "boosts" itself automatically).

Best to leave the gpu and mem offset values below at 0 as this is manual overclocking and requires testing to find what your card can run stably. Even then, I have put mine back to 0 and 0 offsets since my overclock leads to crashes when playing Counter Strike

Aside from the added heat from 980TI SLI (extra expense of custom loop to maintain decent thermal performance - wanted to go wc anyway) I am glad at the moment I went with both the 980TI and sli (first card a year ago, second earlier this year). Even when the 1080TI comes out it would have to be atleast 50% faster than the 1080 to be comparable to the SLI setup.

Even then I dont need more performance than I have at the moment as I can peg 60fps @ 4k on everything at maxed settings. No, I will be waiting a gen or two after 1080 when higher refresh 4k will hopefully be available and achievable. Also, keeping an eye on AMD to see how things pan out there.
