The Happy thread - Positive posts only :-)

I've just seen my first slow worm of the year in the garden, which brings me joy. I find them absolutely fascinating, and are a sign of spring and a testament to my laziness/ wildlife garden.

Start my new job on Monday! My (now ex) employer paid for me to take my accounting exams, gave me a 6 month secondment in the accounts team, got glowing reviews from the manager and did very well when over there. A full time position became available in the team but I was told not to apply because I 'don't have enough experience'. The lady they hired left after 2 months so the job came up again. I was specifically invited to apply for it and was turned down again for the same reason. The manager said there 'wasn't enough time to train' me, like an external candidate requires ZERO training

Made the decision to look elsewhere and secured a job with a 12% pay rise, much better pension contribution, more annual leave allowance, less hours per week. Hopefully works out well :)

I've been working in IT support at a local company for a year now after a year off work with depression and anxiety. The last couple of weeks the dreaded "R word" has been floating around the office so I was bricking it about being the last in first out guy. Our finance director grabbed me for a chat Friday morning and said that I add too much value to the company for them to consider me for redundacy, which left me not only stunned but feeling about a good as I've felt about myself for years :D
Well done.

Payday and paid off my bills for the month, cleared credit card statement, put aside a little for the rainy day…also been to dentist.

Bring on bank holiday.

Overpaid almost an extra payment on my bank loan, and also put the same amount into my savings account. Feel happier than I have in a while financially, as have enough to survive for at least 6 months if I lost my job.
Nice, always good to hear this.

1 thing I did with my bank loan when I got a car just before covid hit was make extra payments though the banking app when I can but when it comes to the final payment do not pay it off as an extra payment, let it come out as a direct debit\monthly payment and let it clear the loan that way.

From my understanding of this as its a scheduled payment you do not get charged any extra for paying it back early as its just wiped out by paying the monthly direct debit.

Obviously it depends on the amount the loan is if you can do this or not. as it was during COVID\Lockdown we could do nothing anyway so rather than wasting the money we put it towards paying off the loan to free up the monthly bills (was a 10K loan)

Looking to relocate to Darlington (closer to my wifes family). Initially we were going to rent (currently renting in Derby). However, my wife has an IVA so it would make it hard to rent somewhere. However, again, I we realised I am with good standing with my credit score. So I cautiously checked what i could borrow for a mortgage just on my wages and other income. It appears I can borrow through an Agreement in Principle, enough to actually buy a house suitable for all 5 of us. This is without my wife being on the mortgage too.

Now its time to save a few grand for deposit and book an appointment with a Mortgage broker and see what they can do for us.

Could all end up Pete Tong, but for now its a big positive for us.

Edit: I know an AiP isnt an offer, but just a note to say they could lend me money. Obviously, a proper application may change things but for now, I can't see any issue.

Yeah it would. My wife isnt getting her hopes up though, we have been through a lot recently, what with our kids issues and her family here, in Derby being non existent for our kids. We planned to go up to Darlington next week for a few nights to see family a while back, so we might have to drop a few hints for a 'gift' if you will lol

I am learning to fly and about 28 hours into my PPL. Did my first cross country with my instructor on Thursday and it felt amazing.

It was my last exercise and just 3 modules left on my theory out of 9. Hopefully get my licence end of July. I just need to practice and get better at everything. My brain was pretty fried trying to aviate, navigate and communicate all at the same time. Especially with all the military zones around here!

It has been pretty full on however. Flying twice a week and spending every spare minute deep in books and practice tests but I can see the light now. :)

Is this for a hobby or for a future career? I can't remember if you said before. Sounds amazing whatever path.

Both. After I get my PPL. I am going to do my ATPL theory which will take me around 9 months. At the same time I am going to apply to a flying school in Lodz Poland. They have a 4 month course where I will do my ratings (multi engine, cpl, instrument etc). I have family that live there who are happy to let me stay and I have dual citizenship. The school in Poland will offer me a route to do a type rating for 737 with Ryanair if I am successful. This is my main plan at the moment.

I have never taken any risks in my life so this will be a first for me but I am fully in. Getting made redundant 3 years ago whilst bad at the time really opened up the mind to a lot.
