The Indoor Riding/ Zwift/ TrainerRoad etc. Thread

I like the idea of the whoop/oura ring, but their subscription costs just seem crazy to me. However just re-reading both websites and they're not actually as bad as i had thought. In my head it was an upfront cost and then ~£30 a month subscription, but looking it seems you can get it to £18/mth if buying up front.

What i don't understand is why there isn't a reduced monthly fee once that term ends. Given that £432 upfront cost covers the whoop strap and 24 months membership, i'd be expecting ~£6/mth from month 25 onwards but that doesn't seem to be the case. Unless you just assume you end up getting a new Whoop strap after 2 years in the same way as people do phone contracts?

When I looked into it, you lose your data if you do that. I much prefer Garmin's up front payment for the watch and no subscription.

I'd not seen the whoop / oura devices before - interesting but I can't see them putting Garmin etc. out of business quite yet.

I find it really interesting to see what happens to HR and HRV during/after exercise, illness or just a bad night's sleep (and alcohol too). Most of the time it matches how I feel, and sometimes it's nice to know that feeling a bit off isn't all in my imagination!

Same here, Garmin leaves a lot to be desired though in their software. I recently had to do a hard reset on my Fenix 6 and it's now saying i've a 3 week period before i'll get a decent HRV status again. That'd been working for 2 months, so i have no idea why the watch couldn't pick up historic readings and just carried on from where things left off :(

They told me the same with Whoop. Like you I thought it odd it's tied to the hardware and not to me (as in, just use historical data they have of me)

Having had 2 months off… well I’m a complete potato now!

Zero kick in the legs, just grit teeth and do my best dieseling in C grade now. Also I am riding new shoes which need a bit of adjustment/breaking in, thought time to change as my others had fallen apart but a new pair is never the same as the previous.

The HRV stuff is great, seems really accurate to me. Like you say seems to reflect how I'm feeling. If my watch says rest I do and it's not led me wrong yeah.
While I was ill three other week my HRV was really low and training readiness was low as well due to HRV, sleep and stress scores.
Wouldn't be without my Fenix.

The new morning report is great as well.

This doesn't seem to be on my fenix 6 - is it a new/beta firmware thing or a fenix 7 feature to tempt an upgrade?
I've been very pleased with my fenix too, the only real problem I've got is the the VO2max estimate seems stuck on the watch (seems to not be an uncommon issue).

Yes new on the 7. I upgraded from a Fenix 5.
Vo2max changes on mine it's very gradual though.

Well, after saying i didn't want to pay i've decided to go with Zwift, i've been using it more recently since i've done something to my foot limiting running. Today i went to use it at lunch and there was a race starting in 1 minute, so figured i'd give it a shot.

I came 8th out of 10 in a D race, so clearly it helps to show there's a lot of improvements to make :D

I think the racing side will hopefully help keep my interest as on some of the workouts i get bored quickly on an indoor trainer. Although maybe that won't come until i actually get to a competitive level!

You'd do better warming up for 5 minutes before starting. The thought of going into a race cold feels horrific to me now (I used to do it).

I always forget to do a warm up (ie not enough time) but it really does help. There are a lot of tactics in zwift and generally you have to be prepared to go hard at the start and stay in a big pack for as long as you can.

If you can stick with the group for even 60-70% of the race, you generally will have enough of a lead behind the next riders that you can’t be caught (even if you blow up). The draft effect is just that strong so you really never want to be on the front.

The tour of Makuri would be a good event to get used to riding in a pack as there will be good numbers riding (some racing and some not).

I guess our effort levels for a “race” are different.
I just took it as a training ride mostly but mainly with a bit more pushing rather than anything too focused.

Going to look into the building training plans I think.

This was just a short 8km “sprint” on Makuri. Although I’m sure it said 2 laps yet it finished after only 1.

Yeah I find the workouts super tedious. Races and group rides are the best. Good shout above to start with Tour of Makuri. I did stage 2 yesterday morning with 550 others.
Just come out the gate fast, latch on to a group, try and stay there. Easy! :D

The pace partners (or 'RoboPacers' as I think they are now called) would also be worth a try as they provide continual group rides without having to wait for a suitable event. There's now quite a range of them averaging from 1.1 to 4.2 W/kg, so you should find one that suits your pace and mood, and they are good for getting a feel for how Zwift drafting works and how much effort is needed at the front of the pack or to catch/breakaway. I ride with them quite a bit, and there's usually some chat going on. If you pick one that's a comfortable pace while in the pack you can always spice it up a bit on the sprint/KOM sections or dropping back and catching the pack again.

In other news, I did the Makuri stage 2 group ride (a.k.a. race) yesterday morning and completely failed to notice the finish approaching. Has anyone else had that ohnosecond after seeing everyone around you start to sprint?

Same, I am 4 weeks into a base training block on TR after 2 months of being very very lazy. The first 2 weeks were absolute hell and the first FTP test was nothing short "why are you even bothering riding a bike you utter sack of ****"

Its still hard, so i feel your pain.

Are you doing the full plan? I'm on low volume, I've done 2x rounds of 6 weeks of sweetspot base, and I'm currently in week 3 of 8 weeks of build phase (short power).

I'm at the point now where 5w more on my FTP is a huge gain, newbie gains have long gone!

It doesn't get any easier :D

I did zwift plans (dirt destroyer & build me up) from December last year to April, which took me from 210w to 269w, then at the start of August I was at 273w, currently 279w. And I've lost about 10kg in that entire time too. Sitting at 3.82w/kg at the moment, trying to inch slowly to 4w/kg for which I need around 295w.

Doing the low volume currently, I didn't want to jump back into anything harder after a long break, My training really kicks in after Xmas for my Triathlons and it will be a mid volume, the full is to hard on my body now I am pushing 52 and need a longer recover for the harder sessions.

I’ve been doing the tour of Makuri, but for some reason stage 2 hasn’t counted…. Might be able to re-ride it in future to “catch up” if needed, a lot of new updates recently to Zwift but not ridden the new routes yet.

What do people use as a source for Zwift?

At the moment i'm using my phone and then have a hdmi cable for it which goes to a monitor. It works ok, but there's a little lag between the phone screen and the monitor. I'm also unsure if the HDMI adaptor i'm using is cheap chinese rubbish, but every now and then it loses connection and re-connects. The official Apple one is about £40 which seems excessive.

I've had a look and see an Apple TV 4th gen seems pretty popular as a choice which can be had used around the £60 mark. I'm also unsure whether to use my work laptop connected to the monitor, it's open access at the moment, but there's talk of locking them down in future which would remove that option. Benefit of that would be the battery life, as i've noticed my phone drops battery even when plugged in, and by the time i usually get on the bike i've forgotten to keep it charged throughout the day and it's on around 25% which leaves me in a sketchy situation.
