The Indoor Riding/ Zwift/ TrainerRoad etc. Thread

If I was doing it again though and had some budget limitations I would be buying the zwift frame and use second hand trainers. There's loads on FB marketplace at knock down prices.

This is one problem in Spain. People don’t seem to sell much second hand and when they do it’s never far off retail price!

This is a pretty standard listing. The Kickr core for the same price I could buy it for new from Wahoo!

Totally agree with the this. I wasn't even swapping out each time, its just such a much better experience which encourages me to use it more and therefore helping to justify the purchase!

Genuine question having not ridden a static smart bike but what makes the experience better? My oldest road bike lives on my turbo so it's always ready to go for Zwift or Systm. Lower maintenance? Though the only thing I look after is the drivetrain - the headset is seized solid from all the sweat.

If it makes you feel any better, I am selling my Kickr V5 at the moment for what I would consider a very reasonable price (£400) and I am dealing with the usual ***** on facebook. "I'll pick it up tonight mate, can you hold it". "Oh sorry, family stuff, can't do tonight, will deffo pick up tomorrow". "Just waiting for the missus to get home and then i'll come over". Crickets.

I'm just going to stick it on ebay because I am sick of people wasting my evenings while I wait for them to not come and pick it up.

One thing I noticed immediately was it was just a smoother experience. I think the kickr bike might have small motor or something that helps it not stop dead when you stop pedalling, to emulate momentum a little. This might also just mean the moments between the downward phase of your padel stroke is smoother too? Also, whilst the bike I used was Di2, the virtual gear changing is just nicer and more responsive. I thought the cassette on my bike and cassette on my trainer where the same, but it wasn't quite aligned the same but I wasn't going to index each time. I think it also feels a little more sturdy, whilst also somehow feeling more natural. I can't really explain that though, might just be a mental thing in my own head. I guess I did always worry a little about pushing 1k watts through it (honest... okay, not very often...) when it was anchored like that at the axel.

I suppose it depends on your current set up and if you need to justify the purchase (to yourself or the boss). I bought a Tacx Flux originally to train for an Ironman during winter. I had a carbon Trek Madone at the time and didn't like watching the frame sway beneath me during hard efforts. My weight fluctuates a bit depending on my activities and how much weight training I am doing so between 83 and 90kg and I can push out 1,100w in a sprint and felt the stress may damage the frame. Bought a cheap and poorly maintained Giant alloy bike which was noisy and poorly geared, tbh I could have done something about it but did little other than lube it from time to time, the drivetrain would rust easily due to excess sweat and got a bit messy. A lot of the other exposed areas were rusting too. Bought the Neo in BF sales a few years back.
For me it is quieter, maintenance free, easily adjustable through 4 settings which are numbered meaning we can switch between myself and my mrs very quickly, is super stable under the hardest of efforts, has a little tray for your phone and the remote, built in ipad stand plus 2 x USB charging points, better freewheeling, smoother and sharper gear changes (quicker than my Di2 Ultegra road bike). Only has a single cable although unless you are wanting to charge something then you don't even need it. Above all though its just more appealing. I've done almost 11,000 km on Zwift and 7,500 of that has been since I have had the Neo of which I have had for around 50% of my time as a Zwift member so I think that shows. Having said that for the best part of the last year I have been self employed so finding the time to use it has been easier.
It looks cool too

I love my kickr bike. I just didn't like the faff of using a wheel off trainer. There was no issue with its performance and I don't think it realistically would have caused any issues with the bike/frame but it meant I was rewaxing the chain more often. Sometimes I would go on it after I had waxed the chain and all the wax would end up all over the floor and trainer. Lining up the thru axle was always a bit of a faff and the gears were never indexed quite right between the wheel and trainer.

Its an expensive luxury but I am glad I bought it.

On an unrelated note, I hate getting ill constantly with children! One of my twins got hand foot and mouth and had a miserable 2 days. Was absolutely fine after that. I got it too I think and had horrible ulcers in my mouth and on my uvula (would not recommend). Took me about 10 days to feel well enough to get back on the trainer and last night I did 1.5 hours Z2. My HR at 190w is usually about 120 and rises to ~130 by the end of the session. Today it started at about 125 and quickly hit 130. After about an hour it sat at 140 for the rest of the session.

Very annoying that every time you feel like you are getting into a good place you suffer a set back.

Yeah, i think i've settled on smart bike rather than bike and turbo.

Just trying to wait to hear back from this guy about the Wattbike Atom X (€650 and maybe 2yrs old and unknown usage), or i'm oddly tempted by the Decathlon Challenge bike (€1200 but new with 5yr warranty)

Was looking for a reaction for your post, started with the like icon and then debated the sad face due to the end of the post. In the end decided to go with neither :p

Anyone tried the Zwift ride?

I considered it, however ultimately decided i couldn't justify the cost of ~£800 over the cost of the Kickr Core with zwift hub when i could just use a regular frameset.

I was on the Decathlon website and spotted they had one of the Challenger smart bikes in the second hand section for €900. Seemed a nice saving of €400 over a brand new one and stated very little marks etc. Plus it still comes with the 5yr warranty which is ideal.

Can get it for £960 from Zwift in the UK with a code if that makes any difference.

Yeah, think it worked out around €1100 for me which converts pretty similar, but getting the Decathlon full smart bike for €200 less just seemed a better purchase for me. I think if i wanted a direct drive turbo i'd just buy the Kickr Core and then spend a few hundred on a second hard road bike though rather than the Zwift ride.

Your mat looks worn/beaten, a sign of some good use! How long have you had it? I nearly got one a few years back when WTRL did the Velomat ones. My £18 'Sportscrafters' I've had for years from some bargain bin needs changing. Parts of it nearly worn through but it's in a garage and had far more than a sweaty lump breathing over the top... I've hammered out BB's on it, even melted part of it with various power tools

Good mileage, I passed 1111 hours this week so grabbed a screenshot. 36850km according to the Zwift starting screen. First registered October 21st 2015 after being in the beta since Jan 27th 2015 so only really just over my '9th' Birthday despite being very early and Zwift celebrating their '10th Birthday'. I seem to recall the beta finishing and there was nothing for several/many months until we had the Live product. I actually delayed my subscription until the weather turned stinky/wet/cold... Even though in those days I rode on the turbo outside on the patio - sometimes in a rain coat!:cry:

Checking those numbers... Veloviewer shows VRide yearly distances as:
2024 as 5478km
2023 as 6108km
2022 as 5710km
2021 as 5169km
2020 as 3643km
2019 as 2862km
2018 as 2275km
2017 as 2361km
2016 as 744km
2015 as 215km

So I'm up-to 34565km virtual miles, which does include some RGT, IV and TrainerRoad. I'm guessing the 'extra' miles on Zwift which don't show in Strava could be from riding I've done and then not saved/uploaded... But an extra 2285km?! That sounds a lot...!

Very annoying that every time you feel like you are getting into a good place you suffer a set back.
Always, such a balancing act - life vs riding! Especially with little people... Look at the numbers above for my virtual miles, factor in my son born end of 2017 in there... Since then the convenience of Zwift really took over. The 1 or 2, sometimes 3 rides of 3-4 hours summer rides per week really stopped. Life took over! 2020 was the year I first really noticed - I did 3646km outdoors and 3643km indoors. Since then (amazing Lockdown weather and being furloughed for 8 months included!) my virtual miles have been significantly higher than outdoor. This year currently 5478km vs 2621km.

Anyone tried the Zwift ride?

Lots of teammates and friends have them and really like the Ride. Even those coming from top end smart bikes. I partly considered it as part of a Zwift Play/Cog setup to replace my alloy frame... Then as my KICKR v5 isn't compatible with the Cog it won't happen with current trainer. Maybe when KICKR needs changing (nearly 3 years old) I'll go that route?! Just bought the Play controllers (£50 BF deal!) which has meant I need to get the Wahoo Direct Connect thingy to free up a Bluetooth channel for it (AppleTV). So lets see... Currently considering a KICKR CLIMB as the front wheel I'm using is toast and would actually free up some space... So looking at second hand ones rather than spending ~£100-150 on some kinda semi-bodge bracket/front wheel mount setup as seems like money better spent.

Complete clueless when it comes to indoor training but recovering from a broken arm so need something to keep myself fit while I can't ride my mtb. Can't see myself doing SIM races probably just ERG, would Kickr Core be a good choice? Seems to be 425 delivered with cog and play which i could sell guess

I had a kickr snap previously and thought it was great. Reliable and no issues. I changed as it was wheel on and I didn’t have a road bike at the time. If you have an MTB on it then you could find you can’t go fast enough in flats/downhills to race. The cog would solve that though if needed.

The core will be perfect for ERG training and that is a good price.
