The Indoor Riding/ Zwift/ TrainerRoad etc. Thread

Was unaware there were TT events in Zwift... the 'burden' of finishing work earlier than most (:p) means the majority of local 10's involve a couple of hours of thumb twiddling before they even begin. I doubt many/any would start around the 5:30-6PM mark?

How unbelievably cruel - I ride the 11.9 mile TT only to find its actually a 12.9 mile TT.

I can't describe how hard the last unexpected mile was.

Waiting for results, think I finished maybe 13th or 14th out of 32.

Get a proper job with proper hours then :v
Luls, brutal!

They've now DQ'd me for not using a TT bike.

Only one problem - I actually WAS using a TT bike.

Can't see an email address to complain to.
There's a link to the XRS facebook group in the race description, post in there! :)

I missed to join you by over an hour lol!

I really can't ride much before 8. Even then I was going to struggle to make the start of the races so resigned myself to a sub WBR 2w/kg training ride. Then on the load screen I saw the EVR race hadn't started yet so I (stupidly) joined it! It was good to finally race through the jungle. I joined the race start without even being sat on my bike. 30s until race start! I wasn't even warmed up! The start for me was dire, I tried to ramp up to hold wheels but it was too late.

Rode hard but steady for a few minutes to warm myself up, then started to move up through the field, mostly C & D riders around me. I'd latch onto a group, recover for a few mins and then dig to move up to the next, did this a few times and the last 2-3 times I ended up towing the groups I'd joined to the groups up the road. Thankfully most of these riders faded and dropped back and I found myself in a group with 2-3 B's with the 3-4 others being strong C riders. Rolled some strong turns and did try to string things out towards the end... But my laptop starting to play up... Framerates went dire so I assumed it was doing a windows update or such in the background. Was digging too deep too deep to do anything about it then just as we're crossing 0.5 remaining I get the dreaded popup 'Battery power is low." DOH! I'd only gone and not fully plugged the laptop power supply in, so it'd been running at lower speeds (as I've set it up to). Thankfully it held out, but at sub 0.5fps I couldn't really sprint for the line.

https://www.zwiftpower.com/race.php?id=14494 - busy race & finished in 41st place. You can see the C's around me I was riding with who got upgraded to B. German Witt guy behind me was super strong and I rode most of the race trying to keep his wheel when in groups before forging ahead solo taking him with me.

Thanks Roady - I've done that, we'll see if they can help - hopefully as I most definitely was on a TT bike. :)

Not that it matters on a TT bike but I rode without anyone near me - I consistently had no-one close by, I could have done with someone around to hang onto for pacing early on, in the end I just tried to maintain power at around 240w-250w for as long as I could, the ramps weren't helping, quite sapping. Having the counter turn to 11.9 miles and there was no finishing line really messed me up - in the end the finish line was at 12.9 miles, I don't understand this at all - maybe I'm being thick, maybe the start wasn't till a mile in - I dunno - I need to look into it to make sure I don't run into the same problem next time.

Man you're brave - there's no way I'd have jumped into a race without a warm-up - I even struggled last night with just 10 to 12 mins warm up. IRL I tend to need 20 mins before my legs wake up. I've noticed the FR +/- column in Zwift Power - that's useful because I'm guessing (!!??) that shows how far you were up or down from your FTP? Great indication of how much you put into the race, whether you had anything in reserve so to speak, if you've kept your FTP updated of course. You did great considering the fluffed start/zero warm up. :)

The FR is freshness I think?

Kiss race at 8, C grade for me I think after my paddy last time when B grade was A pace for the first lap and I got dropped.

Rather ride a full hour at 3.2w pace and get DQ than 15 mins at >4 and then 45 mins on my own!

I’d do an earlier race but they don’t get the numbers on the KISS days. I was well up for B grade on London flat on Tuesday too

GL Berger. :)

I've joined the XRS Facebook group and sure enough there's a fair few peeps on there complaining they've been unfairly DQ'd in last night's race. Hopefully it will be sorted out and we'll get our proper positions.

Pretty sure I’ll be DQ and be around 3.3w.

Fun race though with around 10-12 others putting out the same wattage, had a split on the last climb, it was the forwards not reverse for a change so the steeper hill. 3 got away at the end and I had a bit of a chase with 2 others, picking up 2 from B on the way, the leaders were putting out big numbers and we had no hope.

Managed an awesome sprint though, the first time I’ve timed it well. Freewheeled a bit to let a small gap open with 400-500 to go, then 3w to hold it and then full gas with 250-300m left. Get enough draft to slingshot around (with an 1100w kick) to get a 10+m gap and could pretty much freewheel the last 50m!

Maybe I’ll go up to B, will depend on the course. Not much fun if you go pop almost straight away!

Had a run of a couple of weeks riding now so can obviously feel the improvement, been missing my Sunday bunch rides on the road though :(

Secret Strava!

I'm quite used to riding 'cold' with my commuting. My commute is 2.5 miles so usually <10 mins. No real point warming up for it and I ride it relatively hard to warm myself up a little. But racing is a totally different experience! I'm used to smashing it out of the start and usually making the front of the B group. The slow power curve/ramp of my vortex usually allows me to hit and hold 4.5-5w/kg for the starts.

Naaah, it's Fatigue Rating. I think it determines your average PWR, works out NP and them compares the start and end of the race to determine how much you fatigued during the race. Don't think it takes into account the amount of riding you've done, maybe not even FTP?

On monday I did two races in a row, my comparisons are 1st race: start np 261, end np 269. Result +3%. 2nd race: start np 273, end np 242. Result -13%.

Hopefully it will be sorted out and we'll get our proper positions.
Fingers crossed they're more active than the KISS admins. I've had KISS races needing results finalising for weeks. One never has! :(

EDIT: 7th in B, congrats!

Almost top 10 in B for you if you hadn't got DQ! Good work! ;)

Not that busy a race for KISS, 156 riders showing on ZP. I think many have cottoned on to the EVR races having an 'upgrade' rather than DQ, then they sandbag as C. EVR & WBR races used to be fairly short on riders (so I always placed well!), with KISS being the busiest (so I found them tougher in B). That seems to have reversed the last couple of weeks, around the same time loads more sandbagging going on. #onlycheatingthemselves

Feeling it a bit today, my average power is lower from sitting on loads and freewheeling on the downhills. Took the Trek Madone and 808s! Think I might have been OK in the 57 minute group in B grade but you know how quick the gaps blow out when they split up.

350w averages up the 2 min climb, my best was almost 500! :(

Need a B- grade 3.0-3.49w and B+3.5-4.0

My calves are sore because I got cramps but just rode through it (cos obviously any easing up mid race would mean you might as well just stop and give up) - there's generally a price to pay for that and I'm paying it right now. I usually ride into work on a Friday but today I've had to drive because my calves are super tight and painful.

Yes the categories can be quite wide ranging - I tend to come out of races at 3.2 to 3.4 (ftp is around 3.5w/kilo) but there's an absolute world of space between me and the 3.8/3.9 guys - they're bloody miiiiilles ahead. My timings are all well clear of the fastest cat C's - but I have to absolutely kill myself to get into the middle of a B pack.
