300 cycles ??? you sure

Yeah, there was a class action lawsuit in US last year, against apple, claiming that customers weren't made aware of the battery only being good for 300 cycles and up. The actual Apple defence line was that somewhere, in the depths of Apple website there is a page that clearly states battery is guaranteed to only last between 300 and 400 charges before it starts loosing its capacity permanently (max of 80% after 400 charges).

im interested in getting the iphone 3gs, does it play or have an app that can play divx/xvid? Any good satnav/gps apps for it?

Also has anyone managed to get any kind of half decent deal from o2 when upgrading?

Thanks
Murzo

Two days from charge is slightly disappointing. Keeping in mind battery in GS is rated for 300 cycles only, if it needs charging every second day then the phone could be out of commision long before contract period is over...

To get around this problem, try and keep it plugged into a power source as often as possible.

Battery only uses up a change cycle, when its discharged. So if its topped up, it wouldn't complete a cycle.

Is this true? I was always told to fully charge then fully run down! :(

I try to charge it when it hits 10% and disconnect it as soon as its over 95% - then every month I assumed I should do a proper discharge/recharge cycle to keep it calibrated.

Is that right?

Stick it on charge whenever you can. Keep it topped up. Running down below 20% isn't recommended.

Don't worry about overcharging, Li-tech batteries have overcharge prevention circuitry and will stop charging once the battery is full.

Does this apply to 2G iPhones as well? So I can just leave my 2G on charge 24/7 and it'll be fine? At present I usually leave it till around 50% then charge till it says its full.

What I said above applies to anything with a Lithium tech battery, be it polymer or ion.

Don't leave it on charge 24/7, a bit of discharging and then charging is good for it. But stick it on charge often and keep the battery topped up. Lithium batteries have absolutely no memory effect but they have a limited number of charge/discharge cycles.

They also have a voltage below which they will never hold charge again. The protection circuitry will always switch the device off long before this point is reached, but it is the reason that if the device switches off due to low battery voltage, it is imperative that it is recharged as soon as possible to prevent permanent and irreparable damage.

One full discharge (down to the point where the device switches off) is only advisable if you notice the meter is significantly wrong (for example, the phone switches off when the battery still says 20%): a full discharge forces the battery's circuit to reset and recalibrate. This should be done once a year at most.

Bought a Belkin case from CPW today and it said includes removable protective screen overlay but didn't come with one :(. Will have to pay them a visit tomorrow. Annoying considering it's 8 miles away. Wish more places stocked iPhone accessories!

mine is 20 mile away for me, got a belkin myself but am not liking it at all, seen a Otterbox iPhone Defender that looks nice

I too am planning on returning the Belkin and another case I've got for the 3GS. Not using the phone yet as still waiting for the number transfer.. But I'm after a very good case that offers protection and ease of use.
