*** The iPhone 3G Thread ***

Maybe they dont want to be responsible for when some boy racer crashes his car whilst holding his iPhone for directions.

am i the only person who wants cursor keys? Sometimes the magnifying glass thing just doesn't work for moving the cursor to where i want it.

Press and hold your finger on the screen, then drag it back an fourth ;)

Also, the reason the SDK prohibits the creation of "real-time route guidance" and safety critical apps is so that people can't sue Apple when they drive their car off a cliff "because the iPhone told them"

...the same way the Mac is not intended for use in critical production / control, i.e. control of a nuclear power plant. Not because they aren't capable.. but they don't want the paper to land on the doormat when someone causes a meltdown and blames it on the Apple hardware.

Likewise, other SDK restrictions are in-place to protect the carrier deals. Think: limited VOIP creation, and anything that could undermine the exclusive deals.

For all those wanting to pre-order: YOU CAN'T, but there is talk of 02 allowing pre-registered purchases, where you get a code and then on the day you can just choose a plan / upgrade and buy the handset.

Never having had an Iphone previously I'd like to ask the following question. Will it be possible using a piece of software called anapod explorer to transfer mp3's and photo's direct from my hard drive to my iphone 3g? I find it easier to use than itunes.
TIA,
Pete

I would imagine so as Dosisp by MGTech supports the iPhone and that is another program to transfer music to the ipods/iphone/itouch etc.

Any reply for this please? (non sarcastic would be preferable)
Thanks

No. The iPhone does not support disk-mode by default.

These options are usually added by third party apps, that require a process called "jailbreaking", which is essentially hacking the iPhone to allow them to run.

That said, there are apps (iToner) that work on out-of-the-box iPhones, so check the documentation on the app's website. I've never used that app, but it's unlikely. For the hassle you'll save, you may as well use iTunes for music, photos and videos, and hope Apple adds disk support in the 2.0 firmware (which is a rumored feature, hence the mention)

That would be the magnifying glass i am talking about ;) it sucks.

I find it works alright.. can be fussy if you're wearing gloves, but it works good this end.

Are you using a screen-protector like a big-girl? ;):p

Thanks EVH, using itunes then, is it easy to transfer my current mp3's (not bought online) and photo's from computer to iphone? Or is it only possible to put mp3's on the iphone that have been bought from the itunes store?

Yes it works fine with ripped CD's or music downloaded from the Internet. I have actually stopped using the iTunes store now to buy music because of all the trouble DRM causes (such as not being able to play it anywhere else like Audiosurf). I use 7Digital as well as a few others and they often work out much cheaper than iTunes anyway plus they are DRM free 256kbps MP3's in most cases.

How do ringtones work on the iPhone? As far as I'm aware you can only use ones you buy from the iTunes store (which is stupid if you own the track but lets not get into that, it makes me mad) or is there a workaround?

Any aac file less than 40.40 seconds can be used as a ringtone, after a little fiddling. Just drop it onto MakeiPhoneRingtone and it'll do all the fiddling, then, all you do is drop the resulting file into iTunes and it will show up on your ringtone list.

this'll be my first iphone so the big thing i'm wondering is if its worth the extra 60 quid for the 16gig...

after you've installed a modest amount of apps (not going overboard) what kind of space do you realistically have left for music / vids etc?

which one will you lot be going for?

If i can get the cash together i will go for the 16GB from the 8GB i have.

O2 UK need to get their finger out and start dishing out launch details!!
