Deathloop on PS5. Solid 8/10 for me.
Took a little time to click but I found it to be a very enjoyable game once it properly got started. In fact, one of the most enjoyable titles I have played in a while.
The game concept is quite different to most mainstream games, as is the design. For example you don’t unlock certain essential capabilities until a while into the game. Another example is the lack of hand holding with many aspects of the game and the fact the majority of puzzles and codes are randomised for each player and in some instances actually change between loops for the same player.
There’s plenty of lore and things to discover outside of the main story and with many of them you have to figure out the answers on your own after digesting in game files and voice recordings - there are no in game prompts or suchlike.
I’ve said in another thread that Deathloop is essentially a big time based puzzle that you unpick as you go and actually requires some lateral thinking and planning to get to the end. It’s true that the game does give you objectives to work towards, but once you exhaust these and you have completed enough of the story to get to the end game, there’s no prompt to guide you in what to do - you need to figure it out for yourself. Also, because each loop effectively resets the puzzle (for the most part) many objectives remain in your todo list loop after loop. So you need to differentiate between what needs doing and what doesn’t . There’s a few small details even after finishing objectives that you need to hone in on, so for one Visionary a previous action remains persistent across all loops once competed. For another, you have to repeat it each loop and moreover you have to complete it at the right time of day for it to work. The game even throws you a duff message or two. So for example right at the end, having completed a loop in the right way, I “failed” in one critical aspect of a certain objective. The game told me to essentially return in another loop which is code for “objective failed, please try again”.
But I thought I would just double check the end game area because I had discovered what the requirement was to proceed several hours earlier and at this stage I technically complied with the requirement. As luck would have it I could proceed even though the game said I needed to return in another loop!!
Indeed there’s loads of posts online about people being unable to progress the story under the same circumstances but it seems like an intentional mechanic to not have a “go here and do this” map marker to throw you off balance. Suppose it could just be a bug though!!
You can be creative in the way you play and the “slabs” you unlock allow for a variety of tactics as do the variety of trinkets. Gunplay is simple but fun and actually if you go in gung ho, you can quickly be overwhelmed and have to restart your loop.
Maps change based on the time of day and this adds another dynamic to exploration due to variations in what is and is not accessible depending on the time of day.
Annoyances for me are the bloody land mines. They are all over the shop and move based on the time of day! So learning their placement is a painful part of the game!
Another annoyance is the Touch Bar menu bug on PS5 that leads to a lock up of the game. Think it happened to me about 3 times in total but I didn’t lose too much progress each time. However, I can see how it could be rage inducing in the latter stages of the game when trying to complete the perfect loop. Essentially I resorted to avoiding using the Touch Bar menu as much as possible and that is perhaps why I had so few crashes!
Overall, it’s a deviously designed game with lots of interesting and fun aspects if you are of a mind to seek them out. It can also get real tough if you are unprepared or blasé. I thoroughly enjoyed the gameplay process and the need to use my brain rather than just endlessly following map markers.
I wouldn’t feel bad if I had paid full price for this. Well worth it, in my opinion.
