My next review will probably be Tales from the Borderlands(played on PC).
So,
Tales from the Borderlands lol
Still very much the same modern Telltale-style as everything else they're putting out there. BUT, a good one.
The plot itself is nothing to write home about, in my opinion. It is fair enough by video game standards and it gives you enough context to at least maintain some interest in it. Where I think the game truly shines is creating memorable characters with story arcs that you come to care about. The good guys and bad guys(and the inbetween) are all likeable in some way or another. The dialogue and interactions between the characters are handled in a charming manner, and while still not A+ Pulitzer writing levels, it is good for a video game.
I think many people are put off by the Borderlands setting, sadly. I think that's a mistake. Either these people haven't played Borderlands and assume they wont 'get' the game and the backstory and whatnot, or they have played Borderlands and didn't like it, so assume they wouldn't like this, either. You *really* dont need to have played the main games to get into this. I happen to love Borderlands, so I was happy to revisit the setting, but I know lots and lots of people say they didn't know or care about Borderlands the franchise, but still enjoyed the hell out of this Telltale offshoot. There might be some references here and there that mean more to fans of the series, and maybe a bit more of the backstory is filled in for us, but it is by no means required. You will not be lost and this is mostly an entirely self-contained story whose ties to the main games are very loose, plot-wise. I think the humor is also a lot more maturely handled here than the MEME JOKE GET IT? LAUGH! approach of the main games. Granted, I thought Borderlands 1 was reasonably funny at times and I like the over-the-topness of it, but Borderlands 2 tried way too hard and suffered for it. Tales from the Borderlands gets a good balance. I wasn't rolling on the floor laughing, but it had lots of good chuckle and grin moments.
Also, I think special mention needs to be made for the 'intro' scenes. They're not right at the very beginning of the episodes, but there's eventually a theme song for each episode that serves as the proper intro. These are GREAT. A big highlight of the game as a whole. Song choices are brilliant and keep getting better and better as the episodes ticked off(except for the last one, which I didn't like as much). Dont even look these up if you haven't played the game. They deserve to be experienced for the first time properly. Ending credit music was also just sublime.
So technically, the game seemed fine for me. No bugs or performance problems, though I've also got a pretty decent PC. Graphics are typical Telltale-level, though they definitely *nailed* the Borderlands aesthetic perfectly.
Overall, I give it a
8.7/10. By Telltale standards, it's a very good game. I dont necessarily LOVE these games a ton, but they can be a good palate cleanser for me in between some of the longer or unending(sims, competitive games) games I often play. Definitely recommended. Even if you dont know or like anything about Borderlands, yes!
