The Last of Us (HBO, from Creator of Chernobyl) - No game spoilers please

Honestly I just get the impression that people who think it ticks the "diverse/gay box" are just against representation because you see any representation as a negative.

I used to think that way till I grew up.
What other reason was it there for then? Please explain?

I have nothing against gay characters. Just wasted episodes of a show I was getting invested in.

They always just happen to be gay these days though :p

Anyway, that's not my big beef. It just wasn't needed and totally wasted an episode that could have been developing the main narrative.

If this is the direction they are going, I'm out.

As I mentioned in my own thoughts of the episode, I too was immediately dismissive of the gay love interest (seemingly included for ‘diversity purposes’ so I though) but in the end I think ‘being gay’ did add to the dynamic. It would not have been the same character dynamics between a heterosexual man and a woman.

That’s the sort of thing I actually want to see: not just making it a tickbox but actually doing something with it. This is what everyone frustrated by ‘tickboxes’ should be applauding!

I’ve also stated in the thread that I really, really don’t want this to become an ‘ensemble plot’ series - I find those so tedious. But this story was episodic and self contained (at least it appeared that way), so that’s fine with me.

The whole point of the episode was the letter at the end to Joel.

At this point Bill thinks he's doing Joel a favour by telling him they are both the same type of people, protectors. Joel however has already 'failed' to protect his own daughter and Tess by the time he reads it. His only path forward is to abandon Ellie or try all he can to protect her. It seems this is the point where he chooses option B.

This protectiveness will ultimately
doom humanity

The letter doesn't have any emotional impact without seeing Bill and Frank, and how they are both different. Frank is the artist, Bill is the survivalist. Frank wouldn't have stood a chance against the raiders without Bill.

Very much so...I don't want to spoil it for people but
the letter says "we are same kind of people" as in those who proteect our love ones, with Tess gone, who he failed, so he now is doing everything in his power now to protect Ellie...and that is what is going to be the big twist in the end. I don't even want to say it in a spoiler....it is such a small and quick line which most people glosses over. If anything, this episode's story shows "the kind of people" Joel is. IMO

It wasn't needed, straight couple or gay couple.

I think it was and many agree. Also you haven't seen the entire show so cannot judge how it fits within the complete story. People said the same things about Andor as it aired but by the end it all paid off.

Your earlier post did make it sound like you had specific issues with the couple being gay, which is a very old fashioned view.

Seriously, why is the comeback always to accuse of being a homophobe?? To somehow try and justify a wasted episode?

Honestly, I don't care what race, gender or sexuality a character is as long as they are well written and integral to the story.

Because you specifically called it out.

It told a story of people surviving in an apocalypse during 20 years. The title is "The last of us" (As in humans).

It was a good episode
Some people think they are watching:

"Ugly" teenager who isn't sexy enough for my liking as a 14 year old & good actor I wasn't sure about because he's not white, go on a post-apocalyptic road trip killing zombies. #nogays

:D

I'm really struggling to see why people hated that episode so much. It was well written, the characters were interesting and it was decent seeing how two people managed to almost thrive in a world where everyone was barely surviving.

I'm looking forward to the next episode being more about Joel and Ellie's journey but I don't think the 3rd episode took anything away from the series so far.

In fairness, it was a little jarring (on the basis of the two other episodes to date) to have such a long focus on two other ‘side characters’.

I can’t stand tedious side plots, but I appreciate that a good side plot can help develop better pacing to the whole and contribute towards world building.

Time will tell whether the balance TLOU strikes as a show is great. So far, I think it holds up - but that’s because the execution of episode 3 was very good.
