The Last Of Us

I am the opposite tbh. I felt that Joel far too many times acted in ways that not only were not really what I would have liked, but were also done in places where player choice could have been easily implemented to make the game much more immersive. I never felt like I was really in control of Joel, and that was the biggest fault of the game imo. I found it a bit jarring.
 
This game is awsome..i dont want it to end lol.
The story and atmosphere is great.

Just got done with the part with the black guy and his kid brother...loved the part in the sewers with them all working together...then you get stuck with the little brother and have to protect him ect

Feels like an epic end of the world movie but your in control.
 
I don't want to play this game again even though I miss it so much. Its kinda like Heavy Rain, a second play through will just ruin your experience.

My favorite game of this generation.

There was no reason to involve any player choice though; the whole point was to tell a specific story about these people. If you start involving different decisions throughout the game, you end up with something very different from what the creators intended.

It works for some games, but for a game so heavy on the story like TLoU, it wouldn't be appropriate.

I totally disagree, for a few reasons, but I am going to work soon, so can't get in to it:)...but letting you decide whether or not a few of the characters lived or died, or deciding the fates of some people would not be a very different story, but would improve immersion 100%. It didn't have to go mad, just let us actually have some kind of impact on the game beyond clearing every area of enemies.
 
Completed this at 2am this morning, spent a good half an hour after the game had finished musing the final moments of the game and basking in the excellence that was the final acts.

An utter triumph of a game, which felt short when I'd completed it but when I cast my mind back over the 19 hours of play and what had happened I quickly changed my mind.

Few stand out bits for me:

The opening scene was right off the bat one of my favourite gaming moments, up there with "Wake me when you need me" in Halo 3 and the bathysphere descending into Rapture in Bioshock 1.

The sheer panic and terror when you're in the high school with Bill trying to reclaim the battery, great edge of the seat gaming.

The giraffes towards the end, beautiful moment. However that was overshadowed by a simple yet superbly awesome moment just before. Sitting in the train station in Salt Lake City, Ellie ponders what's happened and what is about to happen when they get to the hospital. As Joel approaches her for the first time to ask her, she shrugs it off. Then, when you need her to get the ladder you press triangle to do something you've done dozens of times previously in the game to call Ellie over and something unexpected happens. They use the taken for granted mechanic to create a pause, and a further conversation dialogue with Ellie... simple, but brilliant.

Finally the obvious stand out moment is with David in the Winter section of the game, so poignant and at the same time quite emotionally difficult to see things through the eyes of Ellie without her protector so vulnerable in the hands of men who will do anything to anyone to survive.

Also, didn't realise that the voice of Joel was the same as Booker DeWitt in Bioshock Infinite and Marlene was voice by the same lass that did Alyx Vance in HL2. Neat.

Finished this last night. What an amazing experiance and story.
It was probably the most emotional i'v felt just playing a video game.
I was blown away by bioshock earlier this year but i think this game has topped it for me.

I love the fact that it basically ends where it begins...with Joel picking up the girl and running for his life to save her. I know that one life doesn't compare to helping mankind but i think the fact that he lost his daughter in the same way, he couldn't bare to let it happen again no matter what.

They are the same person!...in fact, The Last of Us is a sequel to Infinite:eek:
(infinite is such a head**** that I wouldn't bet against it...the first dlc will see you end up in Rapture, mark my words;))

Btw, he is also gonna Be Ocelot in Metal Gear Solid 5 and The Joker in Arkham Origins!

But like I said, that would completely alter the story and wouldn't be what the writers intended in the first place. The whole point is that the things you do in the game are the things Joel would do, even if you as a player disagree with them.

There are people who have said they'd have sacrificed Ellie, for example. But that's not what Joel would do. They wanted the player to feel uncomfortable with many of Joel's decisions and action, and while you're obviously playing the game in your own way, the experience would start to change quite significantly if you start letting the players shape how it progresses.

Joel kills someone at the end of the game.... Letting players decide their fate would not completely alter the story, but it would personalise it and give the game a bit of replayability etc.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the game, and thoroughly enjoyed it, but I don't consider it the masterpiece that many seem to, there were definite areas in need of improvement

Last of Us forces you to be Joel, and Joel is not a nice character at all.

By the end you understand him a lot more, but I don't think you're ever supposed to enjoy or feel comfortable being Joel. And the fact they managed to keep us onboard until the end with that approach is -- IMO -- a mark of true genius.

Agree with this - don't forget, by the time you jump into the game, Joel has already been through 10 years of dealing with infected, military and bandits, friends getting killed, basically living in a hellhole. That's going to turn you into one hard, unforgiving <person>. ;)

But the problem is this: If you let the player make decisions that dramatically alter the course of the game, then you're no longer playing what the creators intended i.e. that specific story about these characters. If you allow just small decisions, then really, what's the point? It wouldn't have any real impact. It potentially undermines the narrative in fact; Joel had already committed to a certain path by the end of the game so one more kill isn't going to phase him.

I do see where you're coming form and I'm not saying that no games should ever have moments where you can choose what you do (Spec Ops is a great one in that respect, I highly recommend it), but it doesn't work for all games or all stories and TLoU is one where letting the player have influence on the story would spoil it.
 
Sigh ok ill admit I chose the 360 over the ps3.. but this game I want so so bad.

So do i buy a ps3 now and get it, or buy the ps4 and hope it comes available on gaikai or what ever its called. Hmm. Help? Ha

I bought a second hand ps3 a month ago, and don't regret it for a second, even though the only games I have found worth playing have been The Last of Us, Demon's Souls and Metal Gear4...oh and maybe GTAV out soon as well. They have all been excellent.

I wish I had bought one a while ago tbh.

I know wish I bought one a long time ago feel I missed a few meant to be great games. Uncharted ect.
