The Liverpool Club Thread. **No Spoilers**

I'll admit I do have an irrational dislike of Riise but nobody is convincing me that he was any better than average. He lived off that free-kick and a few other goals for far too long. Defensively he was far from great and while he had a mean shot on him, his attacking contributions in terms of build-up play, foward passes and crosses were non existent. Aurelio was far better than him but couldn't stay fit and Robertson's even better defensively than Aurelio and while he doesn't quite have the left foot that Aurelio had, it's not far off and he throws in super human running power and energy levels too.

He had that one great cross in May 05... :D

Been reading so much positive Liverpool press recently. We're set to break a record for largest profit for the 2017-18 season with £88m. We're spent some more since but keep selling smart and another champions league run and title shot should see us make another heap of cash.

Our shirt deal runs out in 2020 as well so we are set to make huge possibly record breaking numbers there. Insane to think what's been achieved while making a profit.

Yep, despite the criticism our owners faced for not pumping money in to the club when they first took us over I think they've done a fantastic job. They're running the club like a business first and foremost but appear to want the club to succeed on the pitch whilst making money unlike other owners who have just used their clubs to make money at the expense of success on the pitch. Add some very shrewd signings and it's looks like we're being built for a period of sustainable success rather than short term success which is even better.

Just a quick point on this record profit. This record profit (it's not confirmed as £88m btw, just reportedly at least that) does not mean we made a heap of cash. The way transfers are accounted for on the books meant the second we sold Coutinho for such a huge fee we were always going to make a massive profit regardless of what we spent.

When you buy a player their fee isn't an expense on the accounts - what you record is the drop in value of that player. With footballers that's calculated by dividing their fee by the length of their contract. So if you take Ox as an example, he was signed for £35m on a 5 year deal so from an accountancy point of view he cost us £7m last year and of the start of this season he was worth £28m (£35m - £7m) on the accounts*. When you sell a player you record the difference between what they're valued at on the accounts and the guaranteed part of the transfer fee received (add-ons are accounted for as they're paid). So in Coutinho's case he was worth approx £2m on the accounts and according to reports was sold for approx £102m guaranteed so we would record a profit from his sale of around about £100m.

Very roughly, if you exclude the £40m of add-ons in the Coutinho deal, we had a net spend of around £10-20m last season in terms of actual transfer fees paid and received. However the £160m odd worth of transfer fees we paid only cost us about £25m on last seasons accounts. In contrast of the £140m odd in transfer fees received, about £125m of that will be profit on last seasons accounts.

*When a player signs a new contract, whatever their value on the books is then divided by the new contract length. So had Ox signed a new 5 year deal last summer that £28m would be spread over 5 years, costing us £5.6m per year moving forwards.

As above, Klopp said in his press-conference today that Gomez should be back playing in 4-6 weeks.

The full accounts aren't released yet but the club have confirmed the record profit mentioned earlier in the thread. It's £125m pre-tax but as I mentioned before, that's massively influenced by the Coutinho sale and how transfers are accounted for.

Origi has a new deal, I'm not surprised by it but despite his heroics last season I'm still very unsure if he will become a top class striker for us

He doesn't need to be a top class striker for us, we've got Firmino. We need a solid back-up, who is happy starting 15-20 games across all comps, will score 96th minute winners vs Everton, a brace in the CL semi vs Barca and a CL final clinching goal. Origi as the 5th option for our front 3 is more than acceptable, we just need to sort the 4th option out now.

I'm thinking the club hope Brewster will be that person. Or at least another option along with Origi.

He'll be another option, nothing more. He's a kid and a kid that's just spent a season injured - he might be part of the first team squad next season but I can't see him featuring that much.

The drop from firmino quality to origi is too much, before you say we can pop mane or salah up top whilst yes thats true besides shaqiri the drop from them two to what's on our bench is still too much.

As I've said for a year now, get another Salah or Mane. We don't need a top class centre forward and one wouldn't join us knowing they have no hope of playing regularly. Origi is ideal for what we need and as good as we can hope for.

Clyne's done his ACL. He's had some really bad luck these last few seasons, having gone from pretty much the first name on the teamsheet for us, on the brink of getting into the England side to barely kicking a ball for what will likely be nearly 3 years by the time he's fit again.

Saw this earlier bit gutted for him tbh, is a decent back up option as well.
