Quite liking the Elrond/During story it's building nicely. Harfoorts well waiting for the starman reveal although I think I know who it is. Southlanders feels all a bit amateur hour but might come good. The Numenarian plot is fine apart from why is the daughter even in the show, what role does she serve? And Galadriel without a doubt this character is the worst thing in the show, the writing had in no way earned the epic music slow mo entrance on the boat. They're forcing what's not there.

This show is mildly entertaining and could easily be lifted a few notches is the writing of Galadriel was any good and the Southlanders plot were better.

According to the creatives on the show this is the story Tolkien would have written, and also updated and improved for modern audiences.

Forget the great stories written by Tolkien, hire compete nobody's and task them with matching the quality of Tolkien's work and creating a whole new storyline...

What could go wrong? :)

Tolkien isn't around anymore, anyone can do whatever they want with his universe.

Also it's an impossibly subjective metric to say that it should match the quality of the original when the form of consumption is completely different.

Oh boy, haven't the Guardian changed their tune...my oh my...it was the best thing sliced bread at launch and put HoD to shame...

It's almost like they actually watched the show, read the room and they decided to alter their approach, ironic that they chose to highlight a "discrimination" issue when they alluded to the fan base being toxic in their earlier review and of course amazon have been playing this card for months...

"Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to decieve..." - eh Guardian?

Some weird bits in this episode. The Mithril keeping Elves alive had me "WTF" out loud.

One thing that was either done badly, or was implied through visual setup, is that Eldrond's King might have been fibbing about the future of the Elven race, or the King has been misled by another to tell such a falsehood to Eldrond who would then pass this over to Durin. This is through the slow camera shot lingering on the King watching (overhearing?) them as Eldrond and During began the long walk back with the *ahem* "table". So it might not be that the Mithril is going to be what keeps the Elves alive in the times ahead, but alluded to do so as part of a lie - either through application to Elven forces to defeat the enemy, or (actually) through other mystical means (which doesn't make sense, so it makes more sense about the previous reason)... But the deception and intrigue about where this "lie" began potentially goes much further than that; who started the lie? What was the purpose of the lie? Why did the Elves not recognise the lie? etc.

Thankfully this intrigue is tied up with the A team in terms of the series story; that of Elrond and Durin, so that's a saving grace that it'll likely remain afloat better than some of the other parts of the series thus far.

Now if that is how it panned out (I'm too lazy for a rewatch) then it makes sense regarding Gimli's line in Lotr - "Never trust an elf!"

I'm pretty sure it will come out that Sauron has already been in the ear of Gil-Galad and Celibrimbor and that the Mithril lie started with him.

Same as Celibrimbor wanting to build the forge quickly.

Apart of from Amazon spending a fortune (about 1 billion) on the intellectual rights/production, and various other film companies spending millions to use the IP?
