When a player moves from one team to another mid contract which side if any pays off the players wages for the remaining term? If that makes sense.

No one usually.

The player has to agree to the move i.e. agree terms and a salary that they are happy with at the new club.
The two clubs have to agree a fee and any performance related bonuses or sell on clauses.
The contract with the old club is then closed and a new one opened with the new club.

This is obviously a vast oversimplification but thats generally how it works.

With regards to FdJ (if thats what you are talking about) the sticking point is apparently that in theory Barca don't owe FdJ any outstanding wages because he agreed to defer a large chunk of his wages from the past 2 seasons to the upcoming ones. The issue there is that Barca can agree to sell him to United and United can agree to buy him but FdJ would be an idiot not to make Barca honour those deferred wages before agreeing a move.

Barca are a complete financial mess right now and can't really afford to pay FdJ his upcoming salary and if they don't sell him they will owe him that along with obviously getting no transfer fee for him. They don't want to pay him those deferred wages if possible because, well its a hell of a lot of money but if they don't agree something then he will probably refuse a transfer.

I think thats why the transfer is taking so long. Barca, United and FdJ are trying to figure out how much give and take there will be from all parties on those deferred wages.

Edit: As an added bonus nugget, you will notice that sometimes when clubs loan a player out who they don't want but is on huge wages the parent club will quite often still pay some of the wages to make the player more attractive to potential loan clubs.

If a player is on silly wages and a club wants to sell them then quite often that salary is taken into consideration when another club makes an offer for them. Say you wanted to buy Martial and he would only agree to move if the new club matches his £250,000/week salary, United might have to say that they will accept £20m for him instead of the £35m they value him at so that the buying club will agree to such a high salary.

The FdJ situation is particularly strange and Barca are a bunch of ***** so that adds an extra bit of **** to the situation. Still have no idea how this one will shake out.

FDJ has also said on a number of occasions how happy he is and Barca have said he isnt for sale. That might be them saving face but still it doesnt seem like he's going all out to push it. Reportedly Barca are only willing to give FDJ 3.5 mil of the 17 he's owed.

Do you think this could potentially go legal? I cant see how not paying FDJ isnt a breach of contract.

I think he is happy to stay at Barca but there have been a lot of noises that Barca want to sell him due to his wages and their other options in his position along with his high value transfer fee wise.

If he didn't want to leave and Barca didn't want to sell then this would have died about a month and a half ago. I think he is happy enough to come to United but would prefer to stay at Barca but Barca clearly want to sell.

Hes fundamentally not owed any wages currently if the rumours are to be believed. Thats the issue. The only way he is due those wages is as part of ongoing wages as part of the next few years of his contract. Barcas issue is that he won't leave unless they pay a large chunk of those wages. All the power is in his court and if I was FdJ I would tell them to give me a massive % of them or I will make them pay 100% of them as he sticks around for the rest of his contract.

There is no legal argument to be had which I think i why there is so much negotiating.

He isnt as he deferred them but you'd think anyone with half a brain wouldnt defer so much money and not have him legally owed that money instantly in the event of him being sold.

Barca saying he's not for sale doesn't mean he's not for sale. Much like Sky saying Haaland is a bargain, doesn't mean he's a bargain (though for different reasons).

The good news is it seems like we've set a deadline of Friday for this to be pushed through and apparently we do have alternatives in mind. If Barca are still screwing around we can leave them in their financial mess.

Yeah, that was kind of my point. They are trying to play games and from what it seems, blame Frenkie for the move and make out like he’s a money grabbing dick. Brave move considering I wouldn’t be altogether surprised if this falls apart and Barca have him for the next 3 years.

I think United doing the right thing, don't let scum like Barca try and hold them to ransom. They will come back begging, personally I think FDJ is gonna try take them for everything then move on.

I hope so. Id much rather we bought the players we wanted than buying something knee jerk in reaction. Barca are in the desperate situation. Not ourselves. We are in Europa league and our squad is more than capable of that. I also believe our current squad is more than capable of top 4 as it currently stands.

Pogba, Lingard, Mata and Cavani leaving really doesn't change much as they rarely featured anyway.

Rashford and Martial have been extremely poor last season but in reality they can be top class. I guess we will see.

Hopefully we can get some breakthroughs with youth next season with the likes of Garner etc.

@adam cool dude can we have a prediction from you for the upcoming season? This is your big chance to restore your reputation. :p

I think we will finish top 6 but will play decent football. Qualify for the champions league through Europa ;).

I think Spurs will be too strong, Newcastle will surprise everyone and Arteta will be getting his P45 before Christmas.

Top 2 is pretty much guaranteed but the other two positions you might as well toss a coin although I favour Spurs out of everyone.

I think we will push for top 4 if we sign FdJ and a couple more decent additions. I think people will be surprised how many of our under-performers do well under a more prescriptive manager. I think Spurs will push for top 4 like us but all the talk of a title push is complete BS. Spurs aren't even close to that. Remaining 2 positions in top 4 will be between United, Spurs and Chelsea. Arsenal will have a similar season to this year.

i Haven’t seen any of the media mention about Friday, is this solid info?

Yeah, its good to see someone who is so proactive and exacting with what he expects from players.

My big fear is Ronaldo. I worry that he will come back, not like being told what to do and the powers that be will tell EtH he has to indulge Ronaldo.

Even Ronaldo isn't bigger than a top tier football club and he needs to realise that.

I hope he goes to be honest. I know he scored a lot of goals last season but it was at a detriment to everyone else. We went from 73 goals for in 20-21 to 57 in 21-22 in the league.
