Martial has basically had 3 managers, LvG, Jose and Ole. He did great under LvG had good spells under Jose but was dropped for megaflop Sanchez during one of his best runs. Under Ole he had his best season yet and then his worst.

Did we take his shirt number and give it to Sanchez as well or am I making that up?

Feels a bit mad that he's been at Utd for 7 years now. He's talented enough but like too many Utd players over the past 7 years, he's a fair weather player.

Are there many examples of incredibly talented players, who have coasted for years, then suddenly become consistent in the same team under a new manager?

Not many. I reckon it goes the other way more often than not. Players that coast for years with a decent career and just bloom late or find the right manager to motivate them and take them to the next level.

I don't think that there are that many clubs that are like United over the past 10 years though.

Close? He finished 6 goals off the top scorer...

Martial isnt good enough to be playing for a club that has ambitions to close the gap on the top two. Since that season he's scored 5 goals in the league and none in la liga.

None of his goals were penalties and compared to Vardy (4 of his goals were pens) who was top scorer he played 500 minutes less.

Most of the players above him were also the clubs penalty takers. He was one of our best players that season.

Yes he has been extremely poor for the past 18 months but he has the ability if a manager can get it out of him.

------------De Gea
Dalot Maguire Martinez Shaw
----- Eriksen---Fred
Sancho----Bruno---Rashford
------------Martial

Not sure if it is our best lineup as such but if there are no more signings that is how I think ETH might start the season

Assuming no more new signings, what does our best line up look like?

DDG

Dalot Maguire/Varane Martinez Malacia/Shaw

Fred McSauce

Sancho Bruno/Eriksen Rashford

Martial/Ronaldo
Would be my guess. If we get FdJ he would replace McSauce I imagine.

If no one has DVB in their starting 11 and both Eriksen and Bruno are ahead of him, why does he continue to stick around at a point in his career he should be striving for first team football.

Assume he is hoping to get a good change under EtH as he was a big part of that great Ajax side. We are also not the manager so who know what game time he will get :p

Of course, however it's interesting to see United now have 3 players of calibre that play that position. Especially if ETH can get Sancho/Rashford and Martial utilising their pace going forward. Attack could be lethal of it clicks.

Because football is a squad game, no team just has 11 good players. Hopefully he gets a lot more football under ETH. I don't think ETH only has plans to use Bruno/Eriksen and VDB in the 10 role.

Even with FDJ we don't have a traditional DM. Like Fabinho or Rodri.

My thinking is that means ETH will want us playing a very high line, and Martinez is fast so will be able to get back and cover where needed.

I wonder if Eriksen might be able to play the FDJ role if we can't get the deal done.

VDB is only capable of playing high up the pitch, so he's out of the question in midfield, ETH has said as much.

Fred and Eriksen would be a bit too lightweight against many teams, but McT/Fred is not exactly a great partnership...

Very weak (strength) in central mid. If Martinez is so strong surely we should put him here. He'll be better than Fred who can then join the long list of players in the squad who prefer roles further forward.

ETH did say if we don't get De Jong we could develop some one to do that role, but from what I've read he's not coming to play a defensive role, assuming he does come.
