So after the Brentford defeat, ETH made all of the players run the extra distance that Brentford covered on the pitch. However, this also included ETH himself.

I read that the players were pretty annoyed at having to run the extra distance but shut up when they saw Erik was going to run the distance with them as well.

Why would ETH need to run 13k?

It wasn't his fault the players are lazy.

What he should have done is played 3vs2 and have Fred feeding DeGea hospital passes against Jones, Bailey and Maguire until DeGea gets the message that not everyone wants a pass on their own penalty spot.

Next on ‘what can Running Man find fault with…’

I would like to think that the Liverpool win would give us a great boost for the next few games, but i fear performance levels could drop again, i hope Maguire stays on the bench

If you need to ask that question, probably best you find another sport to follow. :p

Well no, he is punishing the team for being lazy, that's fine.

But to make himself run it too? Seems like a sign of weakness to me.

When a drill Sargent tells his platoon to drop and give him 50 he doesn't do the press ups with them, that would be stupid and self defeating. It sounds like the team don't have the proper motivation to me.

Depends, i thought it was go, they lose as 1, they win as 1. I thought it was pretty good, him team building and getting stuck in building a personal rapport with the squad. Him leading as an example and not some wet quilt like Ole was.

Exactly. The key to good modern football management is to get the players onside and buying in to what you want.

If you act like a drill sergeant they'll just hate you and you'll end up out of a job.

He's essentially working with a group of toddlers so has to do what he can to stop them sulking and throwing their toys out the pram.

I understand how to build rapport.

But you don't punish the players to build rapport, you punish them to show what they did was wrong.

You need to build respect too. When your teachers punished you at school by making you stand in a corner or something, did they also stand in the corner for moral support?

If you forgot you PE kit and had to wear the grubby lost box stuff, did the teachers also wear it too?

Of course not its stupid.

I'm not saying he should never fraternise with them or seen aloof constantly.

If he makes a mistake then yes he could punish himself in front of the team. But this wasn't that scenario at all.

Management isn't a one size fits all approach and personally I think the biggest reason Mourinho is a has been in the management game is almost entirely due to his inability to put up with the modern star players ****.

His Chelsea team was full of leaders and would have run through walls for him. If any of them tested his authority they would lose. No questions asked. Now you can potentially have half the team that are considered more valuable than the manager and when it comes to replacing a few top players vs the manager its usually the manager that gets the boot.

Players have the power and managers have to earn what power they have. In the league I would say that the only current managers who have ultimate power are Klopp and Pep. Even then I think that power is constantly earned and if the likes of Salah or De Bruyne wanted to really fight the manager it would be interesting. Winning is a very good way of earning that power and I wonder how even Klopp and Pep would do if they started having to fight for top 4 instead of the league.
