Exactly. The key to good modern football management is to get the players onside and buying in to what you want.

If you act like a drill sergeant they'll just hate you and you'll end up out of a job.

Some times you need to be punished and yes it does work a lot of the time.

I have done my fair share of disciplinaries in my time.

I understand how to build rapport.

But you don't punish the players to build rapport, you punish them to show what they did was wrong.

You need to build respect too. When your teachers punished you at school by making you stand in a corner or something, did they also stand in the corner for moral support?

If you forgot you PE kit and had to wear the grubby lost box stuff, did the teachers also wear it too?

Of course not its stupid.

I'm not saying he should never fraternise with them or seen aloof constantly.

If he makes a mistake then yes he could punish himself in front of the team. But this wasn't that scenario at all.

Maybe I've been distracted by your constant raport building skills, but I'm trying to recall if you've even acknowledged Utd's recent victory?

The guy has literally just started a new job, he needs to build relationships before he can start tearing into them.

Yes he has and at the beginning you take that approach but there comes a point where you need to use discipline like he has already done by benching Maguire and Ronaldo. We are not saying you have to go all Gunnery Sergeant Hartman on them. There is a major culture and weakness at United that needs to be addressed and hopefully what he has done especially with Maguire is the beginning of the end.

ETH will do what he feels he can do when he feels like he can do it.

That was part of the issue with Rangnick. He came in like a man who wouldn't have to suffer the repercussions of his actions in how he dealt with the squad. I was sick of the lot of them so I had no issue with it but unless you are binning off most of those players, you have to have some rapport with them or instead of an average player you will have a poor one. A poor player can still cause havoc in the dressing room as well.

There is nothing suggesting dropping Ronaldo and Maguire was punishment either. Varane and Martinez are better against Liverpool's attackers and he wanted Rashford to offer the threat against Liverpool's high line, a team he's historically done well against.

Yeah, its a bit too early to be suggesting that Ronaldo and Maguire are both going to be bit parts at this stage. I think we all hope that Varane and Martinez cement that partnership but lets be fair, Varane is made of biscuits and Maguire played the most minutes in any top league last season I believe. Hes fantastically injury free.

Well it's easy to be injury free when you're walking for 90 minutes :p

Agree, ETH appears a man who at this time will pick the 11 he believes stand the best chance until he can build a squad to match his own philosophy - against Liverpool it just so happened to fit.

  • Haha
Reactions: fez

But the ones he missed led directly to goals right?

Do they list goals against stats too per minute because until yesterday I think he would have been top or bottom of the list depending on how you look at it, being subbed at HT after conceding 4 at Brentford.

So let's not all tickle his undercarriage just yet.

It was similar clickbait wording on a Casemiro video i saw. The video was then just populated with a few clips of him making every day tackles and a few interceptions/passes.
