It's an educated guess and no more of a guess than saying the Glazers weren't sanctioning any more purchases. Had Utd saved half of Ronaldo's wages then there's no reason why you then couldn't have signed somebody, like an Ighalo on a short term deal in the summer. Ultimately he'd be more use to you than Ronaldo has been and will.
It's more of a guess. Look how much Ronaldo and his agent were leaking in the summer, do you seriously think if they had an offer that involved us paying some of wages but weren't accepted it they wouldn't be leaking it everywhere? What is the benefit to Ronaldo staying quiet in that circumstance when he wasn't in everything else?

I've no idea, maybe his ego is so big that he didn't want to tell people that nobody wanted to pay his full wages. I don't believe that there wasn't a club out there that would have taken him at a certain level though. What that level is though, I don't know.

So you think his ego was fine with clubs rejecting him right and left but it balked when it came to genuine interest in signing him but the club couldn't afford his full wage? Does that seem remotely likely to you? The only CL clubs that seemed a possibility were Sporting and Napoli and neither was anything but rumours from low tier sources. If there was seriously genuine interest but with us picking up some of the wage then Mendes would have been leaking that everywhere. We've done it multiple times with other players in recent years so it's not like there isn't precedent.

No, of course I don't think his ego was fine with that but I didn't suggest he was leaking that info to the press either. Your question was regarding briefings to the press and as far as I'm aware, that only related to his desire to leave. Why he didn't brief the press about possible interested clubs, I have no idea as I said and simply speculated. But I have no doubt there would have been clubs interested in him, the issue was simply the cost of signing him. Signing Ronaldo and having to pay him £40m in wages is very different to signing him and having to pay £10m, £15m or £20m in wages.

Ronaldo - If he was desperate to play, he'd make the wages work/work something out with Man Utd.

Maybe what @BaZ87 is right and I do agree, the ego is a part of it too. Plus perhaps comparing to Messi.

'If Messi isn't doing this, why should I be the one?'.

If he’s played 1 or 20 games, he’s only scored 3 goals. That ain’t banging them in no matter how you want to tart it up. Don’t get me wrong, I’d have him at the club in a heartbeat but to say he’s banging them in for Valencia when he’s scored a grand total of 3 goals is nonsense.

If he's scored a hattrick in one game having only played only one game you'd say he's not banging them in?

I guess we'll end this convo here as it's pointless.

Multiple reliable journalists reported there were no offers. The only source we have that there were offers is Roy Keane his mate. If you seriously think there were offers on the table but Ronaldo was just keeping them secret for some weird ego thing (while simultaneously having his agent pimp him round Europe all summer) then yeah then I guess it's an educated guess :)

Yeah ultimately it all comes down to Greenwood, it was clear we were getting short term options in the hope he would be our option for the next decade. Unfortunately we lost a £100m+ asset overnight and it's difficult to recover from that. We need to find a longer term option in the summer.
Yep very unfortunate as he was as natural as they come at finishing. I was hoping he would somehow come back but it's looking very unlikely now.

As I said Shami, I don't believe that there was absolutely no interest in him. Whether that interest translated into offers, I don't know but that maybe due to the demands they were being given. If Utd had told Ronaldo that he's free to go but we're not paying you anything and Ronaldo has gone to x and said I want £40m per season then yea, I'm sure an offer wasn't made. Anyway we're just going round in circles.

no, because he's only been played in one game. he's not banging them in for valencia no matter how you try and tart it up dude. and i'm glad you want to end the convo as it most certainly is pointless and stupid.

edit: just for clarity as i may be taking you up wrong but if you say someone is banging them in for their club, i take that to mean that they are scoring regularly and with relatively high frequency. if this is not what you meant then fair enough.

Nothing lasts forerver, not even Ronaldo. Eventually the club has to move on and honestly he is making it easy for them to just get rid of him. He is doing everything wrong in order to keep the fans on his side.

Yep, he's exactly what we need. A natural finisher that just instinctively knows how to put the ball in the net. Rashford is getting better-ish but still makes poor decisions most of the time.

We might have been OK if Ronaldo was still banging them in, but his spectacular loss of finishing and Greenwood out of the picture, we are really stuffed up front.

FWIW, I think ten Hag has played a blinder here

When that, happened in the past it has often signalled an opportunity for a youngster to step up, Rashford got his chance that way and who can forget Frederico Macheda! It would be good to see a bit of Garnacho at the top level. The boy can finish, maybe not as good as Greenwood was but worth some pitch time for sure.

Looks like Varane's injury might not be as bad as first feared. Probably won't play before the break but might make the world cup squad.
I did think that when he was heading off and he seemed to suddenly get himself together once he started walking.

We've all felt something 'go' and feared the worst, and it's actually been something minor like a sprain!
