i recently got this shave serum stuff.

highly reccomended. i usually use creams.. but this is so much better, works well with a DE razor too.

leaves the skin really really soft after a shave. the only downside i have with this stuff is cleaning the sink afterwards is a bit of a chore as this stuff is like oil, so the hair sticks to the sink -_-

Well I've just had a shave and if I'm honest, I'm underwhelmed. I lathered up (having dropped the 'Etholle and John' mug into the sink and put a huge chip in it) and then dragged the razor over my face with the Derby blade. I did this three times and I quite simply didn't get a good shave, I feel stubbly.

I don't know if I was holding the razor at the wrong angle or whether the blade isn't a good cho

STOP!

I just had a close look at the razor.

After I'd put it together for the first time, it was passed around for the others to look at. it was taken apart and reassembled.

The bottom part (nearest the handle) was the wrong way round, one edge of the blade was pushed against the razor, it wasn't floating.

I'm amazed it cut anything!

So I've put it back to how it should be and done *another* three passes. That's six in total.

My face feels a little tender now, it has some redness and a couple of nicks but it was a good shave, certainly very good for a first (ahem, second) attempt.

So I need to pick up a proper shaving mug because lathering up in a normal mug is a) painful (I cut my finger on the chip) and b) difficult due to the size. I think perhaps I should also get an alum block and (it kills me to say this) some kind of after-balm. Suggestions?

I did the exact same thing the first time I tried. I use Geo.F.Trumpers 'skin food' as aftershave balm. The sandalwood is fantastic.

So, just tried all this stuff for the first time.

Impressed! It's a closer shave after a couple of passes, no irritation or pulling at all, smeels SO much nicer and my face feels generally far cleaner afterwards.

Well worth it!

Had my second go tonight and was much better than yesterday. However, still not gone for against the grain pass so about the same closeness as safety razor still for me. Much nice experience however.

Currently using one of these paired with original source shave gel

I'm fairly happy with it, was just wondering if there is any better double-edgeds people would recommend.

Any double edge with a bit more weight to it. I used one of those wilkinson swords for a few weeks, while it worked fine, I felt I had to put pressure on my face with it. Where if you use a heavier all metal double edged razor, the weight of the razor itself is all the pressure you need.

For the price though, that WS plastic razor is a bargain :) I recommend a merkur for a good DE razor.

Most people will recommend a Murkur 34 HD or a Edwin Jagger DE89, I have the latter and it's a great razor, looks nice too..

I have both the 34c & the Futur, the 34c is a great bit of kit but I really do prefer the Futur as it can be set for each person.

I would say the 34c is a far friendlier razor though, much easier to get the hang of.

The futur is the better razor I would say, I just think it is harder to get used to with the size of the head.

Which do you use?

Can anyone help me out here because I literally feel like an invalid asking this.

Every time I shave I always and I mean always get 1 or 2 nicks either on my chin, lip or both locations, this is since i've started using a safety razor.

Now i've tried shaving slowly, quickly, thick lather, thin lather and it still happens every time I shave! I'm using a DB89 and Derby blades and I feel like a retard because every week i'm thinking i'll have a clean shave but that's never the case. :(

First thoughts would be blade angle not quite correct as these are tricky area's, Or maybe try another make of blade.

I've just started DE shaving use the DB89 and my first blades I used were the derby's, I have also tried the Personna's and the Platinum Astra's and I find the Astra's to be the best out of the three.

I hold it at around 20-30 degree angle, is that right? It shaves as those anyway, anything too lower or higher and i'm taking the foam off without removing hair.

30 degree angle is right any more than that and you are going to get cut. It does takes practice as you know, I have also nicked my self a couple of times going across the grain but I have improved my technique and a little more confident now.

You might find a few areas that you always cut, i have a habit of always getting a bit on the side of my neck & just under my bottom lip, no matter what angle I try i always seem to nick at least one bit. So it's not just you.
