Without reading the last 33 pages, whats wrong with a Mach 3? :D

Nothing, if it works for you then the answer is keep using it.

I'd rather pay a bit more for something & then have very little outlay afterwards.....that was the plan before I started buying packs of blades, shaving soaps & balms, still it gives a better shave with no irritation & I feel better for taking a bit more time to do it.

Straight shaving is the way to go though :D

I've had my Merkur for over a year now and I'm looking to progress to something else. Any suggestions? Perhaps an adjustable vintage? What are the pros/cons of a vintage?

I bought a 1969 Gillette Fatboy some time ago. Here's my pros and cons list.

Pros

It looks really cool

Cons

It give a dreadful shave

That's it to be honest. I don't regret buying it as its a little piece of history, but don't expect it to be as good as current models.

I'd go for an Edwin Jagger DE89 or DE89L. Superb shave, looks beautiful and costs very little.

I wouldn't go as far as to say that I get a dreadful shave from my vintage Superspeed but it's not as good as from the DE89L or 39C. I can get a BBS shave out of it but stubble reappears quicker.

I've got a few vintage razors, a Slim Adjustable, 40s Style Superspeed, Tech, Long Comb New, Aristocrat Junior and #15 Aristocrat (all Gillette). I find them all great. They offer different shaves. The Superspeed and the Tech are very mild, the Aristocrat Jr. and the #15 Aristocrat are fairly aggressive, the Long Comb New is somewhere in the middle. The Slim Adjustable can range from very mild to very aggressive.

The good thing about the adjustable is that you can dial it to exactly the level you want and change that level depending on your mood or how long it's been since your last shave. I tend to adjust my adjustable during the shave. I start off on a 5 and dial it up to a 7 for the last pass. Some people do it the other way round and dial down, others leave it where it is.

Whilst I'm here, I also have a number of vintage single edge razors. An Ever Ready Streamline, a GEM Open Comb Micromatic and a GEM Clog-Pruf. These are also excellent shavers, plus the advantage with the GEMs is that they're cheap. I got both of mine for £10. (The Streamline was NOT cheap!)

edit: I think I might have too many razors!

It's a good job I'm not doing this to save money.

And that's not including blades or a couple of additional aftershaves

Wow that's a nice set there, some stuff I've never seen too.

Is that black & green one down the bottom castle forbes lime? I've been meaning to buy some as I love shaving with lime scented stuff, is it worth the money though is my question.......that is if it is CF.

I also spotted some Trumpers skin food, deffo on my buy list too, then again what isnt :)

Yup, that's CF Lime there. It's OK, the scent is good and I get a decent shave out of it but I think it's very expensive for a cream at a tenner for 50ml. I've still not tried everything there yet, the Nanny's Silly Scotch Pine is untouched as is the Haslinger Marigold soap and the samples from Mike and ToBS along with the tub of Rose you see there.

It's really difficult to pick a favourite out of them all. I really love ToBS Shaving Shop, Mike's Coconut and Barbershop soaps and Old Spice Cream. I can take or leave the Proraso and I like the scent and feel of the MWF (metal tin at the back on the left) but I struggle to get a really good lather out of it.

My favourite by far for aftershave balm is Truefitt & Hill West Indian Limes. Its a bit expensive though at around £27. I ran out a few weeks back and can't justify buying more with so much other stuff to use up.

Got my stuff in the post today and will be having a go with it at some point tomorrow. Wish me luck gentlemen :D

I like the way the Edwin Jagger DE89 feels in the hand. It's a nice piece of work and good to buy something English made. Now the fun of trying out all the different blades, soaps and creams starts. :)

Sweet. Report back your findings.

I'd have to agree with the TOBS shaving shop, it was the first one I tried & is still my favourite. Proraso, well I gave that to my dad along with the Bluebeards stuff I bought so I guess that says it all.

I have the trumpers lime cream & the TOBS lemon & lime stuff so I just fancied trying the CF one as I find the trumpers one rather weak in the scent department, I get on ok shave with it but it really loses it's scent as soon as you lather it up.

I have a merkur 34c hd & a Futur which I have recently given to our eldest as I just couldn't get along with it. I also have 2 straight razors, one vintage & one new, both sitting in their boxes right now as I have not got around to buying a strop yet......skint after Christmas again :(

Smigly, my mrs sometimes steals my Merkur 34c for doing her legs, she says it s the best shave ever but she has never gone as close as you did lol. She got that No no thing for Christmas so hopefully I get to keep my merkur lady free :)

They literally are. All womens disposable razors just aren't sharp enough. The bic ones with the pink handles normally do a decent job but if I haven't soaked my legs for an age, they seem to tug at the hairs and make it sore, whereas the merkur just glides over your skin. Apparently not over bobbly bits though.
