One of the reasons I started shaving with a DE razor was because a normal razor gave me all sorts of rashes/spots etc, never get any with a DE razor. Along with proper prep and a good razor and blade combination I get a perfect shave every time.

Thanks for the replies hux and Justin:)

The ingrown are a PITA! I literally have to stand at the mirror with a pin and flick them out or they turn into a massive spot.

The small spots on between mouth and chin were very small, but there were about 10 of them. I am not sure if they are ingrowing hairs as they appeared 24 hours after the shave that at the time seemed like an awesome shave.

Would my dad be thinking of the barber style cut throat? I am looking to get the ones that take razor blades like that used in prisons to attack eat other (crap description I know!).

My main concern about the shave is the small spots as I am unsure whether it is because the shave was too close, or because Mach3 really aren't that good.
I have had a look at that guy on Youtube, I watched it before using the soap stick and badger brush as I hate stuff from a can with a passion as it doesn't do much to lubricate my face.

Have a nose in sainsbury's they have bulldog balm which i find superb, tried more established brands and yet they weren't anywhere as good for me whether they stung or sticky or just plain sucked.

Plus if you get lucky they might have it on offer for £2.50 like i did. ;)

The balm is just for razor burn btw they will do nothing for ingrowns, that's caused by the lift and cut action of the mach 3 blades hence why you should move to a de razor. ;)

As for irritation, get the method right and you will be fine:
1. Wash face with soap and hot water.
2. Apply foam, I find any foam works.
3. Using hot water to clear and heat the blade, shave 90 degrees to the direction of growth (never against the direction of growth).
4. Rinse using hot water.
5. Pad face dry with towel.

I use a Mac 3 and this is exactly my method too (except I use gel rather than foam). I used to get awful bumps and burns which were so bad that I would shave the night before work so it was soothed by morning. It was all trial and error unfortunately but now I don't get any redness.

After being dragged around an antiques shop today I did manage to pick something up for myself.

A little Gillette travel razor. The yellow thing at the top is a spare blade holder.

Interesting thread. I've been a convert to DE wetshaving for quite a while now and was surprised to find this on a computer forum.

I've tried a load of razors, brushes, soaps, blades etc. My favourites are
razors: vintage gillette hd rocket, merkur futur, anything by edwin jagger
blades: red personnas, iridiums, super thins, swedes
brushes: simpsons best badger, omega
soaps: tabac, palmolive, mwf, p160, harris

I visit all the usual shave forums like SMF, B&B etc. There is a great UK one at http://www.theshavingroom.co.uk

cheers

Pete

Could use some recommendations, currently use Liz Earle After-Shaving Moisturiser which is very nice, but a bit on the expensive side @ £16.50 for a 50ml tube, so can anybody recommend something similar but which is cheaper?

Thanks...

PRORASO pre shaving cream is perfect before and after the shave. It both preps the face and then afterwards closes the pores and protects the face. It's also incredibly cheap.

I don't think mankind stock it but a few of the UK online stores do.

Yeah this is also good stuff. I just use it for pre-shave which does an excellent job.

Ingram is just as good and superdrug sells it for around £1.60 just make sure you buy the blue one as that lathers up.
with fine cocobol
Funnily enough i've gone and bought a decent straight, it's a thiers issard 5/8 tudor rose with fine cocobolo wood scales, expensive yes but it used a much older blade before ti got bought out, it's meant to make for some of the best shaves out there and i got tired of my cheap gold dollar letting me down, wish id went for a wapienca first instead.
No hotlinking!

Well I've shaved with my Merkur 34C three times now. Yes, three times! I can't be bothered shaving when I only work one day a week. Obviously I'll be shaving more when I start my new full time job in April. :)

The previous two shaves I used the Derby blade, today I used the Israeli blade and I think I got a better shave with it. I have no problems with my cheeks, area between nose and upper lip and area between lower lip and chin. I'm finding it hard to get the blade at the right angle when I shave the neck just under the jaw. I can feel quite a bit of stubble there just like I did with my Gillette Fusion but at least with a DE razer I don't get the shaving rash.

Since I was having a good shave with a new blade I tried shaving upwards on my neck and found I was able to get a smoother neck this time. Guess I'm still a bit scared of what I can do to myself with a DE razor. :p

Does anyone know of any good shops/sites selling decent sized toiletry bags? I have quite a bit to take to the bathroom and it'd be nice to have a toiletry bag to carry it all in.
