The Manly Shaving Thread

I might make a switch to a DE after my Mach 3 cartridges run out but I find the Mach 3 gives me a great shave. I like the idea of the low cost of the razor blades. Not sure I'd be into the brush and soap thing though.

You dont need a brush and soap. Use what ever you use now if you want.

I have the shaving soap/cream but just apply it with my fingers and hands

how is it more aggressive?
larger amount of blade showing? different angles?

Bit of both i think. As i say i've not used one, but everyone i asked about the matter when i was going to buy my first safety razor was that the 34/38C are best and the futur is something to be avoided as it's easier to cut yourself.

I'm still after a safety razor that offers me the same 'visibility of the blade' that the single blade edge of the fusion offers. Reason being is that I need to know where i'm shaving so I can get my lines accurate.

Anyone know such a safety razor that will provide me with that?

Why not a cut throat? :)

You do get used to using a DE to make lines, you just have to be carefull

Have a look at the every ready 1912 or the gem junior, they are single edge razors, will take more getting used to than the merkur but they will provide superior shaves.

The ultimate is a straight but it takes a long time to get good with one, at least a few months.

I got mine here:
http://www.traditionalshaving.co.uk..._STA-SOA-LUX/268168/Starter-Kit---Luxury-Soap

Which was frankly a bargain considering that amount of shaving soap lasts for months and 10 blades, also for months. Sadly they're out of stock of both 34 and 38c, the owner is really nice though so it's worth dropping an email to see if he knows when they'll be back in stock; i'm sure he'll help as best he can.

I don't need blades yet but when i do i will probably attempt getting a cheap pack of 100 from ebay. Even if they end up being fake or whatever it's only a tenner or so so i'm willing to take the risk.

Whats the best websites to purchase from? Looking to kinda get it all from one place and noticed there are a few online shops out there - something like a starter kit with everything you need sounds like a nice idea - think when I last looked I wanted a Futur due to the ability to change how near the blade was to the skin - presume others do that though...

Also wondering what would be best to aid visibility - I found when I tried a Fusion that the head was so big I couldnt accurately trim my sideburns and the main reason I still use a Mach 3.

I did try and dabble with a cut-throat but decided against that as it takes some skill to do it on yourself and was way too worried about using it on my neck the couple of times I tried. Maintainence is also a small pain...

My only tip is to shave after a bath/shower - really is the best way to do it Ive found on top of whatever your prep is...

No but if you're new to this i'd recommend the 34C or 38C. The futur is much more 'aggressive' and therefore more likely to result in nicks and cuts, the 34C and 38C are much easier for beginners (and cheaper and, imo, better looking)

adjusting the setting shows more blade, helpful if you have a longer beard.

leaving it on setting 1 is pretty much the same as other razors.

After reading this thread I thought I would give a Merkur 33c a go. I have always suffered from a sort of rash after I shave and tried all popular razors out there.

Got my Merkur this morning with some derby blades and its one of the best shaves I have ever had. I was expecting to be cut to bits but I found it easier than a normal razor like the fusion to use due to its weight.

Avoid the Futur. It's a pos imo and horribly made. Build wise it is superb, but just look at it carefully. No grip on the handle says it all pretty much, and secondly the blade change mechanism is just plain daft. It costs way too much for what it gives you vs the 34c/38c's.

It was my first noob purchase, and I bought it purely on looks without reading the reviews on badger and blade. I've only used mine four times and lobbed it into my junk cupboard. The 34c is in a different league for build quality - it does have a rather short handle though.

As mentioned above, you don't have to use a brush and soap, I'm still using the Soap & Glory For Men stuff my girlfriend bought me and it's fine.

I bought mine from here:

http://connaughtshaving.com/merkur34c.html

Then subsequently bought:

http://connaughtshaving.com/popular.html

Website looks like cack but the stuff turned up quickly etc, no problems.

I've only used the blades that came with the Merkur (Treet) and the Feather blades from the sample pack. I found I get on better with he Feather as they're a lot sharper.

Odd seeing my futur imo is my best razor, crank it to 6.5 and off i go, i have a de89l and don't find it anywhere aggressive enough for my whiskers.

Anyway as said the 38/34 are good starting razors, i started with a futur and tbh i wish i hadn't it took a while to learn it's ways, superb now of course.

Electric is best. Takes 1-2 minutes and no water or foam is required.

While electric does own for speed (i still have mine on standby for whenever i accidentally sleep in on a work day) there's no way you'll get as close of a shave with one as you do with a decent safety razor.

Also after using the soap my skin always feels all soft and lovely, yes i'm a woofter.
