I aim to get the Astra blades with the Murkur 34c - This a good combo for a noob?

I can't comment on the Astras but you can't go wrong with the Derbys.

Careful with the 34c, it is a great razor but the handle is way shorter than I am used to, I plumped for the 23c in the end, which is similar with a long handle.
The 38c is the heavy long handled version of the 34c.

I am very tempted to click buy on this, as I get ingrown hairs, tiny spots due to heavy skin irritation and a general sore neck from my mach3.
I have noticed a HUGE degradation in the quality of my shave this week as my soap stick has run out and I am using some Nivia gel crap-in-a-can!

Also what exactly do shaving oils do and do you literally slap it on before I use the cream?

Thanks:)

EDIT: Dad just had a look and moaned that those are the sort that cut your faces to bits. I have asked this on OCUK before but people thought I was on about cut-throat razors.

Astras are a good blade, personally id start with derbys then use the astras later on.

Btw use code "bandb" and you get 10% off, how's about that. ;)

Straights can cut your throat to bits if not careful, de shaving is fine just go steady.

No worries mart it's a good razor.

@hux. Do you know anywhere I can get a Merkur Long handled Progress at the moment?
Timothy Edwards is out of stock, they offer the best price and free P & P.

Traditional shaving only have the regular one.

What's the point in using them then? I never get cut with my Gillette or my Braun electric.

They work very efficiently, they are also cheap once the initial handle purchase has been considered.

The 5 blade thing is possibly all hype, one sharp blade can give a near perfect shave, indeed the straight blade barber shop shave is still regarded as the best.

The downside is it takes longer, there is an element of skill and tehnique involved however it is very satisfying when you get it spot on!

Bought a gold slant bar earlier this morning, as I feel my 34c isn't as close as I want it to be, even with feather/iridium blades. Will post pics when it arrives...it could be the last time I'm on the forum :o :D

I would be interested to know how you get on with it. One of the things that puts me off a slant is shaving under the nose, they look hard to maneuver.

How come you are leaving the forums?

wow the feather blades are damn sharp, if there is even a tiny spot in my beard line it slices it right off, but they are damn good at getting through 4 days growth, much better than derbys, but I think I will only use them when I havent shaved for a few days as they are pretty unforgiving if you get confident lol

@MrMoonX, I have had my best shaves with a feather blade. They don't seem to stay sharp for long however?

The Derby's give good all round performance I find.

Was using a Merkur with the standard blades for about a year. Got the feather blades and wow what a difference they make. Amazing shave. Shaving can actually be enjoyable now.
