that each side of the blade or per blade?
Per blade as mentioned :) Let me know how you get along with that Future as I am not a fan of my one, which was my first purchase. I too have that brush and soap :D

Well my Merkur Slant arrived last week, in Gold :o I was ill throughout the week but gave it a test run. Oh lord, is it's aggressive reputation true. It cut through my hair like a hot knife through you know what vs my old 34c. I was using Iridium blades for this task, as I feared Feathers would just be TOO close and sharp with this razor.

http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=2525

In two passes I had seriously smooth skin, and for once I didn't have to shave against the grain (like I do with my 34c) do get there. On first impressions it is one hell of a razor. Going to give it a second use later tonight :o

Id be wary of super iridiums, from what i've read on b&b they might have changed plants, some people have been getting poor shaves from them, another good alternative is the gillette yellows to which i linked above.

Just had my first proper safety blade shave (I had one a few days ago but face was still v.sore from the mach3 and crud gel the day before).

It went well with no nicks. I had to 'touch up' one or two bits with the mach3 as it wasn't close enough but for my first proper attempt I am happy - I can only improve on my technique :)
It is difficult not applying pressure, simply because my stubble is thick and for years on end I have had to grit my teeth and plough the mach3 through the stubble on my chin, or it wouldn't cut it properly.

Using cream and a brush is 100x better than crap from a can. I would even say that a mach3 but using proper cream and brush would give immensly better results alone.

Tbh mglover, i'm of the opinion that when it comes to the razor, technique is more important than the type of razor you use. Cream, brushes etc will always be important as you've rightly said but again as you've said, as long as you use the right technique a cheap bic razor will do the job fine.

With that said i'll never give up my 34C, it looks cool and it is a hell of a lot cheaper to replace the blades.

The thing is I WANT to use the Murkur, as I want to stop using my awful techniques!
May be in 6 months time I could use any razor and be OK due to technique.
You are spot on with the price of the blades though, the mach3 blade prices are horrendous!
I don't think I will ever go back to **** in a can. I am using 'taylor of old bond street' cream at the moment, but before this I used my dads old soap stick and even that was in another league to the can stuff.

The good thing about a safety razor is that it teaches you good technique. After a few months with it you could go back to a 'normal' razor and shave without issue (but probably won't as safety razors are just better). The thing about 'normal' razors is that they don't punish you in an obvious way if you use them poorly, they give you a rash and some discomfort over the next few hours but it's difficult to associate it with exactly what you did wrong.

When you screw up with a safety razor you know about it, fast. But that's the good thing, you know what you did wrong so you can avoid doing it in the future.

thats true...i'll never cut my thumb in the same way again:p

After 6 years or so of shaving being something I just fit in quickly in the morning and get an 'acceptable' shave I ditched my Fusion for a Murker which arrived today along with a sampler of blades.. I've started out on a Derby blade and it's miles better than cartridge razors, I wish I hadn't waited this long!

After 6 years of razor burn and pouring money down the sink going from Mach 3 to Fusion to Quattro and Azor, none of which gave that much of an improvement (I used to choose which to use based on what blades were on offer!) I suspect DE shaving is going to be far better in the long run!

Now I just need a brush and some good soap, any pointers for a reasonably priced pair?

My 2nd Murkur shave gave me HORRENDOUS razor burn!
Turns out that whilst I was 'barely applying pressure' compared to my mach3, I was still using far too much pressure. You really have to use very very little pressure on your skin. Again, my bad habits of ramming the mach3 into my face, gritting my teeth, and ploughing it through my chin stubble had given me poor techniques.

Well I'm at three now and it keeps getting better, I learnt to apply little pressure very early on... the painful way!

Getting exceptional results now and my skin feels much better for it!

Just had another attempt!

My cheeks only need 1-2 passes but the mouth area, jawline, chin and neck require up to 5 passes to get a smooth feeling.
I just spent 30 mins shaving and it is a very close shave and aside from 1 or 2 nicks (I am a bit blind without contacts!) it went very well.

All this 'omg close shave' stuff aside though, I am more interested in whether I will have razor burn, ingrowing hairs or those tiny spots in 1-2 days time. No discomfort at the moment though:).

Was using a Merkur with the standard blades for about a year. Got the feather blades and wow what a difference they make. Amazing shave. Shaving can actually be enjoyable now.

This. I used the standard blades and really hated shaving so went back to the cartridge ones. Spent £2.50 on a pack of 10 Derbys and haven't looked back.

I find it difficult to create a good lather though. I seem to use a lot of soap too :( Any hints?

You want your container to be really really hot, and the brush to be wet, but not too wet. I fill the sink up with the hottest water I can from the tap and I put the brush and cup in it while I shower. When you are ready to start, empty the cup out, and give the brush 1 or 2 shakes to remove most of the water, but not it all. Put the soap in the cup (a pea sized amount should give enough lather for 2-3 passes) and start mixing. With a good soap, it only takes a few minutes to get to where you need to be

Right im sick of paying a fortune for blades. I like to leave my shaves till I get a slight beard. Can someone recomend me a razor, brush and blades and foam? . Doesnt need to be really cheap but nothing extreme. Want to give this stuff a go :D

I think, razor wise, you can't go wrong with a Merkur 34C.

Blades are personal choice so I would get a sample pack first to find out which ones suit you best. Although Israelis and Derbys are good starters.

I'm currently using L'Occitane Cade shaving soap and Clinique Post-Shave Healer, although Taylor Of Old Bond St and Mitchell's soaps are also meant to be good. Again soap/shaving balm is personal choice.
